Book Review: Playing With Myself by Randy Rainbow

Music permeates Maren's soul, whether performing (voice, piano, drum, guitar, clarinet) or acting as a crazily enthusiastic audience member.

Randy Rainbow Is The Silver Lining for Americans

If you haven't heard of Randy Rainbow, you may be someone who thinks Fox News tells the truth. Randy is known worldwide as the creator of tour de force song parodies about hoodlums in American politics, especially those active from 2020 and beyond.

Randy Rainbow is an audio-visual techno expert with a Broadway worthy voice. His vocal range and quality could have landed him leads in Tony award-winning productions, but fortunately for all those who voted for Hillary Clinton (who won the popular vote for President of the United States in 2020) he had a higher calling. What was that? It was writing, performing, and producing - all single-handedly - clever music videos to call out the shysters who have exploited their power since The Donald entered American politics.

In addition to his video production skills, singing talent, and boundless energy, Randy brought the following highly honed skill set to his videos (which palpably eased the stress for incredulous good citizens who could not believe what the bad guys were getting away with.)

  • a piercing sense of "cut the malarky, you wingnut!"
  • his encyclopedic knowledge of show and pop tunes,
  • costuming genius with a huge dollop of humor, and
  • a flamboyant celebration of his gaydom.

What more could a sensible adult want?

Bonus for Fans: Now Randy Has a Memoir!

I didn't even know it was in the wings, but suddenly news of a book by R.R. himself came across my radar. Of course, I obtained it immediately. It is better than I could have imagined and here are the reasons:

  • It is truly Randy's voice
  • His understanding of his childhood and family dynamics explain the blossoming of our Randy
  • Plenty of photos!

The Double Entendre Title

Of course, Randy's oeuvres are a result of one person: himself. Even before the COVID pandemic, this was his method of operating and he was in his element and hit the ground singing when the world became "online only." Randy did it all himself.

However, being the clever entertainer who winks at a little naughtiness, any other interpretation of the book's title is probably purely intentional. I mean, Randy is a comedian!

It Starts With Childhood (and Earlier)

Since the memoir is not a murder mystery or fancy-schmancy novel, I appreciate that Randy tells his story in chronological order. I had known from interviews that Rainbow is his genuine, from birth, surname and that his grandmother totally cheered him on. This book provides even more detail.

Fred Rogers and Randy Rainbow

Amazingly, another of my heroes, Mr. Rogers, and Randy had several common elements in their childhoods. They both were pudgy, picked on by agemates, had fantastically rich imaginations, and had time alone to practice their pretending. In adulthood, both developed their childhood skills for the benefit of humankind. Wow!

Tension with His Father

If into every life some rain must fall, Randy's memoir reveals the problems he had with his father. Without belaboring, Randy's recounting makes ne admire him all the more. It was not a trouble-free path which led Randy to stardom.

Cat Lover

Being a cat mom (or staff) myself, I can only love Randy even more for his connection with the feline species. The book tells all about it.
