Bill Holland's the Mailbag, the Book!

Mr. Holland's Mailbag is here to stay, in book form! Not this article. This is just an announcement. It's a good reminder though.

If you want a personable, conversational voice, then first change your outlook on life and then the voice will follow.

— Bill Holland

There's a book! There're a few books featuring the teachings and advice of William (Bill) Holland found in the 400 articles he authored on HubPages. As a matter of truth, the books take the teachings from the online The Writer's Mailbag and deposited them in book form so aspiring writers can have a version of The Writer's Mailbag with them whether there's online access or not!

Bill Holland is a beloved author and teacher with quite the cult following online of writers who form a community. Bill announced in 2022, after he reached his 400th article in the series, that he and his wife Bev were going to unite in a travel adventure resulting in the needful conclusion of the long-running advice series.

Bill and Bev's new adventures will take time and effort to chronicle, leaving no time for the continuation of The Writer's Mailbag, which is why Bill authorized the creation of his doctrine into books of scripture we could memorize!... kidding.

Bill and Bev's new series!

So that’s how I do it. I allow all of you to see the real me. Does it work for everyone? I know quite a few writers who struggle mightily with this approach and finally just give up on it so no, it might not work for you. But we’ll never know if you don’t try it.

Mr. Hollands Mailbag

... Three Books, You Say?

Mr. Holland's Mailbag Volume 1

Mr. Holland's Mailbag Volume 2

Mr. Holland's Mailbag Volume 3

That's about right for the titles, and all. Because this is a mention of what's to come, I want to give a disclaimer that besides Bill's artistic advise, three others work to make sure the work progresses. Because there's a team, what I write today may change later ... Today: Mr. Holland's Mailbag Volume 1 ... Tomorrow: Bill's Vibing Words!

It could happen!

My father was a tough taskmaster and I’m a better man because of it. Don’t get me wrong, when I was a kid I hated his expectation of excellence, even when doing mundane tasks like mowing the lawn, but I grew up an adult who now expects excellence of myself in my craft, and that is a priceless gift he gave me. Give yourself the same gift and quit settling for mediocre.

— Bill Holland The Writer's Mailbag: Installment #95

It most likely won't happen, but ...

Did you notice my use of ellipses there? I learned that working on Mr. Holland's Mailbag!

Each volume covers a specific number of The Writer's Mailbag articles. The articles in those groupings cover every topic any person has questioned Bill about--with answers to boot!

Yes, this does mean the same topic may repeat in the volumes. The great thing about The Writer's Mailbag is it shares progression for both seeker and dispenser of knowledge. Each volume reflects the changing writing scene, and Bill's constant adjustments to remain relevant in the writing world. His answers ring true in each volume of the one constant of change, and what he thinks about it!

I’m not a big fan of the ocean. I don’t dislike it. I just don’t get a big thrill out of it. The Washington coast is always windy. It’s almost always colder there. And the water is frigid.... Bev loves it, though, and the dogs will have a blast on the beach.... Me, I’d rather be in the mountains, but I’ll comfort myself with a cheeseburger or two. It will be nice to get away, so I really don’t care where we go. As long as I’ve got Bev and the dogs, I’m good.

Mr. Glenn Holland Had His Opus, Now It's Bill Holland's Turn!

... I break the grammar rules quite often when writing fiction. I just have to go with what feels right for me and hope the reader can figure it all out.

— Bill Holland The Writer's Mailbag: Installment #370

I hope you read the quote.

Sometimes when I read an article, I tend to skip over the quotes as I read because I'm more interested in what the author of the article has to say than the person they're quoting as an authority.

In this instance, you'd miss the most important part of Bill's charm: his personality. It shines through the written word. His secret is life-changing:

If you want a personable, conversational voice, then FIRST CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK ON LIFE and then the voice will follow.

Bill offered sage writing advice and eye-opening life advice. In Mr. Holland's Mailbag Volumes 1-3, those moments of sagacity are digitized for personal storage on devices or inked to paper for tangible copies to come out soon.

This is your first heads up!
