An Acrostic Poem about God's Love
Bronwen was a teacher for over forty years. Degrees include School Librarianship, Psycholinguistics and Theology, and Applied Linguistics.
Acrostics, they say,
Are not easy to write:
Alphabet letters the way
And to keep it all tight.
Best to give it a go,
But how the words flow
Based on letters and rhyme
Better not guess at this time.
Could it be I have letters
Closely linked within fetters
Crowded together, without theme,
Clouding my mind and my dream?
Down to tintacks I must get,
Dreams and imaginings forget.
Drastic measures are needed,
Dire brainstorming now heeded.
Early morning and late night
Elucidate my plight;
Emboss topic on mind,
Embrace God's love I find.
Flowing thanks for the notion
Flood right over - an ocean
Filling heart and wayward soul
Father, praise for the goal.
God, Your love to us send,
Glow in neighbour and friend
Giving us A-B-C-D-E-F-G:
Glorious notes of Your harmony.
How to sing of Your praise,
Hold Your love all our days.
Harrowing troubles pull us down,
Hellish thoughts make us frown.
Idolsl of the world entice,
Ideas that are not really nice,
Images in mind's eye abound,
Immorality beckons to confound.
Jeremiah of Old Testament fame,
Judah's prophet who cried out "Shame!
"Judgement of the Lord on transgressors will be,
"Joy for repenters who God's glory shall see!"
Know of God's love in your mind,
Keep your heart pure and find
Kiss of breath of the Spirit flows
Keen, in your soul His love grows.
Listen to his cry and prayer
Lamentations; man in chains. His despair
Lets him fall to depths until hope,
Lovingkind Lord teaches to cope.
Middle of my poem! Lamentations Three
My model in the Hebrew acrostic I see.
Module that tells of suffering and injustice
Making him turn to God's great promise.
Now we know God does not send troubles;
Numbskulls that we are to reach,
Novices on life's journey. He uses, enables,
Nick of time, to rescue and teach.
Our God sent us Jesus Christ,
Only, precious Son from heaven
Obeyed His Father, then sacrificed,
Our sins should be forgiven.
Paid for sin with agony on the Cross:
Pause now and give thanks for His loss,
Penitent praise for God's great love.
Peer in the tomb, but empty the cave.
Quaked the earth, tomb opened to free,
Quail not, nor fear, He is not here.
Quiet the morn, women weep to see,
Query: "Where is our Lord so dear?"
"Risen and alive is Christ."
Run! The Good News to share!
Report to the Disciples' tryst.
Retrace to the Garden there.
Soon Jesus appeared to many:
Some on Emaus Road and to any.
Showed Thomas His hands and side,
Said for Holy Spirit to abide.
Then to Heaven He ascended.
They felt so bereft. Then life mended:
The Holy Spirit as promised descended
To those at Pentecost - a fire
Upon their heads like a dove,
Unbroken promise of love,
Ultimate gift of God to abide,
Upholder of comfort, our Guide.
Veil of blessing and of power:
Venture to unknown lands,
Verdant hills or desert or bower;
Vibrant, they obeyed God's commands.
We too must obey God's call,
Wander the world or stay home
Working to spread love to all
Warm or cold lands to roam.
X: The Cross for all upon Earth;
X number of Disciples who died;
Xmas remembers His birth;
Xtasy for the Saints who abide.
Yea! To Heaven in glory!
Yes, to Eternity their story,
Yet we, too, can gain eternal bliss
Yesterday, today and forever is this -
Zion, the Heavenly City on high,
Zenith of our hope, the dearest,
Zechariah's Kingdom of God the nearest;
Zilch if His love we deny.
