Alleviate Meaning & Definition

Alleviate is a transitive verb that means to make something less severe, intense, or painful. When you alleviate something, you are reducing it in some way.

While the word alleviate can have a number of different meanings, the basic meaning is to make something less severe. For example, if you have been sick with a cold and you start taking medication, the medication will help to alleviate your symptoms. If you are feeling afraid about something and someone comes over to talk with you and calm you down, they will be alleviating your fear.

Alleviate has several related meanings. You could use it as a synonym for "ease" or "relieve" when talking about pain: The pain medicine didn't completely eliminate my headache but it did alleviate it significantly. You could also use it to mean "make less severe": The fire department worked long hours to alleviate the damage caused by the hurricane.

When something alleviates suffering, it reduces or removes discomfort: The families thanked their neighbors for bringing them food and other items that would help to alleviate their suffering after the flood.

If you're having trouble understanding the term, think of all of the words around it. If someone is in pain, and you want to help them feel better, you give them medication. If they're stressed, and you want to make them feel better, maybe you'll tell them a joke or have a conversation with them. Both of these things will help to lessen their suffering!

If someone is suffering from hunger, then food would be their alleviator. Same goes for thirst: water would be the alleviator in that instance. It's important to know what alleviates what so that we can help people when they need our assistance. And if you're ever in a situation where something is making life difficult for you but not quite bad enough that someone needs medication or surgery to fix it, then whatever helps make things easier (but doesn't completely solve the problem) will be an alleviator!

You might also see this word used as an adjective--for example, “The alleviated symptoms were a welcome relief."
