Publishing a Book

There are various routes you can take to become an author. The most common path is to receive feedback, approval, and representation. Even so, patience and time may be required. Don't have that? There is a quicker way.

What is Self Publishing?

Self-publishing is a great and quick way to get your work out there. Many authors have found success by taking this route. You may even be familiar with some, such as EL James, who self-published 50 Shades of Grey, and Robert Keyosaki, who self-published Rich Dad, Poor Dad. These are just a few examples, but there are many more wonderful, successful authors who achieved success through self-publishing.

The Steps to Self-Publish a Book

  1. Write something you're confident about.
  2. Explore and select a platform to use.
  3. Edit, design, and format your book according to your preferences.
  4. Upload manuscript
  5. Publish it when you're confident

Questions to consider before embarking on the journey of self-publishing:

  • Are you prepared to edit your story yourself or hire someone to do it for you?
  • How will you promote this book?
  • Do you have any ideas for the cover?
  • Have you done your research and found a reliable self-publishing platform?

Tips for Your Self-Publishing Journey

  • Make certain that you are publishing your book on a reliable platform. Using the most popular ones may be the best option. Most people use Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Press, and Reedsy which are all great options.
  • Market the book before it is published. You'll need an audience eager to see your work.
  • Receive feedback from others. Take a step back from your work and allow others to provide feedback. It's fine to get different perspectives and hire others to do some of the work. Don't try to do everything by yourself.
  • Create a community around your target audience. Determine the audience you want to reach and how you will bring them together; social media can help with this.
  • Learn from others. Do your research on self-publishing and learn from those who have done it before you, which you can do by listening to podcasts, watching videos, and, if possible, speaking with small authors who have self-published.

Don't get too excited!

Although self-publishing is a great, easy, and quick journey that anyone can take, the results are not always the same for everyone. Expecting to become famous and successful overnight or immediately after self-publishing a book is unrealistic; it does not happen overnight. Give it some time and don't get too excited. You can achieve many other realistic author goals through self-publishing; just don't set them too high.
