Wonderful Book of Letters

With so many different things going on in our world, it is such a delight when you can turn to a good friend, a book. They bring comfort and they transport you to another time and place. Well, to get my mind off the various things going on, I chose 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff among many to read. It is a short biography of about 97 pages in letter form. It's the kind of Penguin Classic that you love to take with you, just in case you find down time.

The biography is about a American writer who begins a correspondence with a British bookseller and his lovely staff of the Marks and Co. Booksellers a few years after World War II.

Helene writes to the Bookshop in London, in search of classic English literature that she says she can not find in late 1940s New York City. From there, the relationship with Frank Doel and the staff grows to the point where Helene starts to send them goodie boxes because of the hardships in rations. This book will transport you like you were really reading their personal letters. I know there is a film based on Hanff's biography and I truly plan to see it. If you want a wonderful book you can read in one sitting, search for this diamond.
