5 Different Ways We Use the Word Hot

I have been writing poetry, fiction and short stories for many years and have completed a book of poems. I also enjoy comedy writing.

English is quite a confusing yet intriguing language. So many words with simple meanings have been used in slang and otherwise and have given a whole new meaning to the word being used. As an example, look at the word cool. Cool is normally associated with temperature right? But if you know English slang, you would know that cool also means; Okay, Awesome, Exciting, nice, dope etc. The word hot is not far trailing from its pal cool as it also has several meanings. Some of these meanings are official while some are just slang. Street talk if you prefer to call it that.

Hot Temperature

1. Temperature

One of the first meaning which comes to mind when you see or hear the word hot is temperature. It is probably one of the first words you knew the meaning of as a toddler growing up when your mother used to say things like, "Don't touch, it's hot!" But you just had to find out for yourself what she means by ‘hot’ and then ending up with burnt fingers. So one of the official meaning for the word hot is having a high degree of heat or a high temperature. So we can use the word hot in a simple sentence like;

  1. It is really "hot" outside today.
  2. He got burned because he touched the "hot" stove.

Hot Foods

2. Foods

So what did you have for lunch today? Did you gorge down on a dozen some Dragon Breath peppers with a tall glass of concentrated rum? If you did, probably you are in the emergency room right now or you have some Godlike power to quell the harshest of foods as they enter your stomach. So when we talk about 'hot',it can also be associated with foods. This really does not have to do anything with the temperature of the food but its natural taste. So the official meaning to the word 'hot' as it relates to foods is; foods which contain or consisting of pungent spices or peppers which produce a burning sensation when tasted. These foods can also be foods with natural juices which may cause a burning or hot sensation by itself. Eg. Peppers.

3. Topics

People love to chat and they love to get the latest and up-to-date scoop on various subject matters. Whether it be a dead president found holding chihuahuas or a male celebrity that just got butt implants.These are considered hot topics, this that a lot of people find interest in and widely discussed by a lot of people. It doesn't matter wear the news comes from, if it is correct or not. Once it is viral, it is hot topic.So we can easily say that that Trump's hair is always a hot topic.

4. Item

The word hot used on various items such as cars, clothing, jewelry can have two very different meanings. It all depends on the context the word hot is being used in. Let's say a gorgeous woman walks up to a shop in the mall and sees a blazing red dress in the window. Immediately she likes the color, the style and the overall look of the dress, she thinks that this dress is pretty 'hot' and immediately buys it. Now, let us say that that same woman was walking down the street and she sees a shady looking character coming up to her, pops out a suitcase filled with dresses and jewelry and offers her sales at unbelievable prices. Then a passerby sees what is happening and taps the woman on the shoulder and tells her those items the person is selling is 'hot' and she should avoid buying anything. That last use of hot means that the items are probably stolen and someone or the police may be looking for the thief and even the buyers. So we can use hot in two different sentences here:

  1. The red dress was blazing hot and the gorgeous lady bought it.
  2. The Jewelry was hot and he had to ditch them fast.

5. Male/Female

The word 'Hot' is often used to describe the attractiveness of a male or female. A bunch of women may be sitting down applying eye shadows and of course the topic of discussion is males. Then a male names pops into the conversation and someone says, "Yes, Clive is really hot." That person is basically saying that Clive is the complete package of having a good body and a good looking face and topping it off is his fancy dress style and his suave way with words. A Similar scenario is with a bunch of guys sitting down and having a few drinks and of course the topic of discussion is woman. Then John confides in his pal Jeff that he thinks his wife is pretty hot. Jeff's wife is actually quite attractive, she dresses well, has a toned body and turns a lot of heads. Jeff totally agrees with John but still later punches him in the nose for having an eye on his wife.
