44 Completely Innocent Words and Phrases That Sound Dirty, but Aren't

Who doesn't love a good vocabulary lesson? Especially words that are fun to say because they sound like obscenities. Here is a list of 44 words or phrases, that my husband compiled over a few months of unemployment, and complete and utter lack of anything better to do with his time, seemingly, that sound dirty, but are completely innocent!

  1. Coccyx - Technical name for the tailbone
  2. Angina - Chest pain caused by poor blood circulation
  3. Rectory - The home of a priest
  4. Depository - A place where things of value deposited for safekeeping
  5. Septum - A thin membrane that separates two cavities of the body
  6. Penal Code - A legal document containing laws and regulations of a certain subject
  7. Erector Set - A brand of construction toy popular in America
  8. Virginia - A state on the eastern coast of the United States of America
  9. Masticate - To grind or crush something
  10. Master Debater - One who can defeat others in debate
  11. Analgesic - A medication that reduces pain
  12. Cunning Linguist - A creative speaker
  13. Homo Erectus - An extinct human-like species of mammals
  14. Breast Stroke - A swimming style
  15. Anal Retentive - A term used to describe a control freak
  16. Venus - The second planet from the sun in the Milky Way galaxy
  17. Cockpit - The control deck of a flying vehicle
  18. Shuttlecock - A projectile used in the game of badminton
  19. Tight End - An offense position in American football
  20. Djibouti - A country in Africa
  21. Blue Footed Booby - A kind of bird known for its blue feet
  22. Woodpecker - A kind of bird, guess what it does?
  23. Asinine - Completely foolish
  24. Conch - The shell of a sea snail
  25. Uvula - The little hangy ball in the back of your throat
  26. Lake Titicaca - A large body of water located between Bolivia and Peru
  27. Tentacles - The appendages of an octopus or squid
  28. Dictator - A supreme ruler
  29. Peacock - A kind of bird, known for large, colorful rear plumage
  30. Organism(s) - A living thing
  31. Spelunking - Cave exploring
  32. Penal Colony - A settlement of exiled peoples
  33. Cockamamie - Ridiculous
  34. Cockapoo - A breed of dog
  35. Rectified - Clarified or set right
  36. Butler - A servant
  37. Rebuttal - A statement or evidence given, to contradict a previously implied notion
  38. Poop Deck - The deck of a ship that forms the roof of the cabin
  39. Pro Bono - Free, derived from Latin, meaning “for the public good”
  40. Ramifications – Results or consequences
  41. Subpoena – A legal document, summoning witnesses to court
  42. Titillated - stimulated by touch, or tickled, or excited
  43. Diction - The use of words in speech or writing
  44. Tittle - The dot on top of the lowercase letters i and j

You forgot the Grande Tetons and Volvo. Although Lake Titicaca is one of my favorites, particularly because it is a conjunction of two dirty words making it especially problematic.
