Black Cat Mugs
We all know that black cats aren't really bad luck, but they're still a fun Halloween tradition, at least in decoration form. They range from spooky to cute, depending on your tastes. Just remember, real black cats are friendly and should be treated with respect, just like any other cat. But, as far as Halloween decorations go, indulge in some black cat traditions!
Black Cat Myths and Superstitions
One of the most known superstitions is that it is bad luck to have a black cat cross your path. Highly superstitious people will avoid black cats like the plague. This stems from the idea that black cats are witches' familiars. Actually, the fear of cats in the middle ages helped to spread the plague. The plague was spread by rats, and since cats hunted the rats, the disease spread more easily when there weren't as many cats around.
Black cat lore dates back thousands of years. In Greek mythology, it was said that a woman was turned into a cat and afterwards, was a priestess of Hecate, who was associated with witchcraft. Some people associate any cat with witchcraft, not just black cats.
There are some cultures that actually believe the opposite: that black cats bring good luck. In particular, in Scotland, if a black cat arrives at the house, prosperity is supposed to follow. In England, black cats bring good luck, especially as a wedding present.
Many shelters refuse to adopt out black cats during October for fear they will be used in satanic rituals. This is a real fear, as such incidents have occurred. However, far more common than these extreme acts are people adopting a black cat near Halloween, then returning it to the shelter shortly after the holiday. The theory is that they want the cat as a decoration for their house. The sad part is, they don't realize how hurtful this is to the kitty, who thinks it has found a home only to be brought back to the shelter days later. It is hard for a cat to move environments, and their feelings should not be taken lightly.
Of course, black cats are simply that: cats that have black fur. There is nothing evil or ominous about them. When I was young, my aunt had two cats: a black cat, and a sandy colored cat. The sandy cat hissed and scratched while the black cat, Spooky, was a complete sweetheart. So, while it's a fun tradition in terms of Halloween mugs and decorations, don't take it too seriously. Next time you see a black cat, treat it just like any other cat.
Spooky Halloween Mugs
If you're looking for a more generic spooky Halloween mug, here's a couple of choices. These also make great gifts, because they suit a wide range of tastes. Don't forget the coasters...you'd hate to ruin your furniture!
Jack-o-lanterns are probably the most common Halloween tradition in North America, besides the costumes. There's so much room for creativity, they're probably the most fun out of any Halloween decorations. I love seeing all the different spooky designs people carve into the pumpkins. Here's a few jack-o'-lantern mugs that will really put more scare into your Halloween.
Jack-o’-lanterns are one of the most prominent Halloween symbols. Most houses that participate in the holiday place at least one jack-o’-lantern in the window or on the doorstep. Many houses display more than one, and some houses have many jack-o’-lanterns, sometimes with impressive and fancy designs carved into them.
In North America, pumpkins are used for jack-o’-lanterns, but when the practice began in the British Isles, turnips and beets were commonly used for the decoration. They were often used as lanterns and carried on the festival of Samhain (today’s Halloween). It is thought that they were also as protection and to represent the spirits of the night.

@Sylvestermouse: I do the same. I use holiday mugs more often at the right time of year, but I love to use them year round.

My favorite way to get ready for each Holiday is to get a coffee mug related to that holiday. I already took out my Halloween mug: it's black with orange smiling Jack O'Lantern faces. It's a great idea to start a coffee mug collection and then display them as a way to decorate for the holidays!
