Irish Quotes, Blessings and Toasts

Best Irish Blessings, Sayings, Quotes and Toasts

The wit and wisdom, humor and hope of the Irish have found their way into quotes, saying, blessings, prayers and toasts to spread a bit of cheer.

These snippets and pearls of wisdom continue to be passed down and used to celebrate, to toast and to explain the ups and downs of life.

Irish quotes and blessings are used at weddings and christenings, wishes at commencement ceremonies, toasts to celebrate life and prayers at wakes, funerals and end of life services.

There are so many beautiful Irish blessings that have been passed down without attributing their original authors.

On this page I have selected some of my favorites to include on this page from the many inspiring Irish quotes that I have collected over the years.

I also found many of these encouraging and uplifting quotes on different items that can be worn, used for drinking or toasting, or put up in the home to inspire.

The ageless wisdom found in Irish quotes and sayings can be use in many different settings from pub crawls to christenings. You might also share them online and spread the cheer as your email tag line, post them as your Facebook status, tweet them on Twitter or pin products with quotes on Pinterest.

An Irish Wish

I wish you not a path devoid of clouds,

nor a life on a bed of roses.

Not that you might never need regret,

not that you should never feel pain,

No, my wish for you is...

That you may be brave in times of trial,

When others lay crosses upon your shoulders.

When mountains must be climbed, and chasms are to be crossed,

when hope can scarce shine through.

That every gift God gave you might grow along with you.

And let you give your gift of joy to all who care for you.

That you may always have a friend who is worth that name,

Whom you can trust, and who helps in times of sadness,

Who will defy the storms of daily life at your side.

One more wish I have for you...

That in every hour of joy and pain, you may feel God close to you.

This is my hope for you, now and forever.

Classic Irish Blessing - May the Road Rise...

Perhaps one of the most recognized Irish Blessings, which has been reproduced on many, many Irish blessing products.

May the road rise to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face.

And rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

May flowers always line your path

and sunshine light your day.

May songbirds serenade you

every step along the way.

May a rainbow run beside you

in a sky that's always blue.

And may happiness fill your heart each day

your whole life through.

Always remember to forget

The things that made you sad.

But never forget to remember

The things that made you glad.

Always remember to forget

The friends that proved untrue.

But never forget to remember

Those that have stuck by you.

Always remember to forget

The troubles that passed away.

But never forget to remember

The blessings that come each day.

May these walls be filled with laughter,

may it reach from floor to rafter.

May the roof keep out the rain,

may sunshine warm each windowpane.

And may the door be open wide

to let the Good Lord's love inside.

When the wind is howlin' in everyone's ears,

May you hear a soft, lilting breeze.

And if the rain is crashin' down,

May it only be dew at your knees.

If the ground 'neath your feet should quiver and shake,

I hope you'll be standin' with ease.

And never go hungry or wantin' for much;

May God grant you all that you need.

The Classic Irish Blessing "May the road rise to meet you..." from the Priests debut self-titled album, The Priests.

Music by The Priests

The Priests are a musical group made up of three Catholic priests from Northern Ireland, Father Eugene O'Hagan and his brother Father Martin and Father David Delargy. The Priests broke the Guinness world record for the fastest selling classical debut album of all time with The Priests, the album.

Healing Blessing by Roma Downey

An Irish Blessing from Roma Downey and Phil Coulter

May the blessing of light be upon you,

Light on the outside and light on the inside.

With God's sunlight shining on you,

May your heart glow with warmth

Like a turf fire that welcomes friends and strangers alike.

May the light of the Lord shine from your eyes

Like a candle in the window, welcoming the weary traveler.

May the blessing of God's soft rain be on you,

Falling gently on your head,

Refreshing your soul with the sweetness of little flowers newly blooming.

May the strength of the winds of Heaven bless you,

Carrying the rain to wash your spirit clean,

Sparkling after, in the sunlight.

May the blessing of God's earth be on you

And as you walk the roads,

May you always have a kind word for those you meet.

May you understand the strength and power of God

In a thunderstorm in winter,

And the quiet beauty of creation

And the calm of a summer sunset.

And may you come to realize

That insignificant as you may seem in this great universe,

You are an important part of God's plan.

May He watch over you and keep you safe from harm.

Longer Toasts and Blessings

Here's to a long life and a merry one

A Quick death and an easy one

A Pretty girl and an honest one

A Cold beer and another one

May you always have work for your hands to do.

May your pockets hold always a coin or two.

May the sun shine bright on your windowpane.

May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.

May the hand of a friend always be near you.

And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow.

May the soft winds freshen your spirit.

May the sunshine brighten your heart

May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you.

And may God enfold you in the mantle of His love.

Toasting in Memory of a Loved One

Toasting, drinking in honor of or in memory of a person, is one of the ways of remembering the person who has died. Giving a toast when food is served after a funeral or memorial service is another way of honoring the memory of the deceased person.

May you be in heaven a full half hour

before the devil knows your dead.

That the devil mightn't hear of his death

Till he's safe inside the walls of heaven.

Always remember to forget

The things that made you sad.

But never forget to remember

The things that made you glad.

Oh, here's to other meetings,

And merry greetings then;

And here's to those we've drunk with,

But never can again.

Irish Funeral Prayer - Death is Nothing

This prayer was taken from a sermon "Death the King of Terrors" delivered by Henry Scott Holland and delivered in St. Paul's (London) on May 15, 1910 following the death of King Edward VII. The prayer has not been derived from Irish writings, many versions of this sermon have been used at many Irish, Catholic and other funerals and memorial services.

Death is nothing at all.

It does not count.

I have only slipped away into the next room.

Everything remains as it was.

The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.

Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by the old familiar name.

Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.

Put no sorrow in your tone.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.

Let it be spoken without effort

Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.

There is unbroken continuity.

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near,

just around the corner.

All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.

One brief moment and all will be as it was before.

How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.

More Irish Funeral Blessings

May the Irish hills caress you.

May her lakes and rivers bless you.

May the luck of the Irish enfold you.

May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow.

May the soft winds freshen your spirit.

May the sunshine brighten your heart

May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you.

And may God enfold you in the mantle of His love.

May we live in peace without weeping. May our joy outline the lives we touch without ceasing. And may our love fill the world, angel wings tenderly beating.

For the test of the heart is trouble

and it always comes with years.

And the smile that is worth the praises of earth

Is the smile that shines through the tears.
