How to Make Paper Mache Dinosaur Egg Birthday Party Favors for Kids

Make your own life-sized dinosaur eggs!

I have thrown a number of dinosaur themed birthday parties and these eggs by far have been the biggest hit of everything I've done. You can incorporate them in a game or just use them as favors instead of goodie bags. You will be amazed at how the kids react to these. Even once they are broken open they will want to keep the pieces and take them home with them.

I have found the no cook paper mache recipes work best.

Supplies:

Balloons, normal balloon shape

Newspaper

Flour

Water

Paint

Kids can't wait to crack open a dinosaur egg!

Step by Step Instructions

Cut newspaper into strips. Wider strips cover faster, but will make your eggs look more like rough edged rocks than eggs. Go with as thin as you have the patience to apply.

Mix one part flour to two parts water to make the paste.

Blow balloons up to the size of a dinosaur egg.

This is a messy job! Cover work area with full sheets of newspaper or a plastic tablecloth.  Also have a bowl of water and towel nearby to rinse your hands as needed.

Dip newspaper strips into the paste and cover balloons. You will want to hit each spot at least two to three times.

Let this dry for a couple of days then go back and check on your eggs. (You may find you have weak spots you will address those soon.)  Cut a slit in the egg big enough to insert whatever toys and candy you want the kids to find inside when they break the eggs.

Remove the popped balloon and insert the favors.

Then reapply paper mache to cover the slit and any weak spots as needed.

Let dry another day or so, and then paint. I like to use earth colors like brown and gray with darker spots added for dimension. You could however paint the eggs whatever wild color your child’s imagination says dinosaur eggs might have been.

Let dry and your eggs are ready to be hatched!
