How to Make a Mummy Costume

The mysterious mummy is a great Halloween costume theme for people of all ages. Mummies can be wrapped in gauze, bandages, sheets, heck, you can even use toilet paper to make one of these ancient characters. On this page you will find out how to make a mummy costume, how to apply mummy makeup, and these are no sew costume ideas. I am not a seamstress! Never learned to sew more than a button on a shirt, so most costumes I've written about do not involve anything more than a straight stitch.

The mummy costume is a great group costume idea. It's easy enough to make, and I cannot imagine the look on your neighbor's face when they see a bunch of mummies coming out of your house.

Add A Tulle Skirt To A Girl's Mummy Costume

Add a bit of cute to your little girl's mummy costume with a tulle skirt. The great thing about making your own tulle skirt is you can make it as long or as short as you like. You can also make your tulle skirt as thick or as thin as you like. You can find instructions about how to make your own tulle skirt on this fairy costume page. It;s an easy costume accessory to make. Use a ribbon or a stretch crocheted headband as the waist and you tie tulle in a knot around the waist band...try it, it is super simple and really adorable.

Look at this little guy, all wrapped and knotted up. This boy's Halloween costume was easy peasy to make. Boys will love dressing up as a mummy. It's scary, but doesn't have to be too scary...just the right amount of Halloween fright for kids. Add a bit of makeup to the costume and you are done.

Make A Mummy Costume From T-shirts

You can make a mummy costume using t-shirts. For this easy, DIY costume project you will need:

  • A Pack Of T-Shirts - at least 6
  • A Ruler
  • Scissors
  • White/Off White Top
  • White Leggings/Stretch Pants

Cut the sleeves off at the seam and lay the t-shirt down on a table. Measure 1 1/2" lines across the shirt from bottom to top. (take a look at the picture below) Cut strips from those lines neatly. Now you will have a bunch of circular strips...make a cut at one of the seams so you have long continuous strips. When you have done several shirts, start to tie the strips to each other making knots when you do so. Tie 4 or 5 of the strips together this way. When you are ready to "put on" your costume, dress in your white shirt and leggings. Start to wrap yourself in the strips starting at one of your ankles and work your way up your body.

To start the wrapping process, tie the strip in a knot at your ankle and wrap your way up. When you have completed your leg and body, go back and wrap the other leg. Anytime you want to stop, just knot the strips together. This is an easy way to make your own Mummy costume.

Let the gauze strips soak in a container of brewed tea for a while. Then wring them out, flatten them and hang them to dry.

Wear some white/beige leggings & t-shirt as a base and then wrap, wrap, wrap. Tie or tuck in the ends of your gauze. You can see in the video below how she did her makeup first and left only one eye exposed.

When your wrap job is done to your satisfaction add some gray makeup to your costume look to make it look as though you have been buried for centuries. Dirty up your exposed skin on your face, your arms and your hands. This is an easy last minute Halloween costume idea.

What Materials Make A Good Mummy Costume?

Cheesecloth, muslin, or gauze makes a good mummy cloth. You can also use t-shirt material, or even sheets to make your mummy costume. Larger pieces of cloth can be wrapped around your body and head or you can cut your material into strips that can be tied together and wrapped around your body.

The cloths can be used in their natural color or you can use a batch of tea to stain them. The choice is all yours. As you can see, the mummy costume up above is a dress that has ruching on it, that means it is a bit gathered in places and I think this dress is perfect to wear if you are dressing up as a mummy. You can wear a white/beige t-shirt and leggings under your costume but then to make the style outfit shown in the video up top, you will have to wrap your entire outfit in strips of the mummy cloth.
