What Are The Benefits of Doing A Jigsaw Puzzle With Your Family and Friends?

The young and the old benefit from working puzzles.

Not only do jigsaw puzzles help as you age, but they are great food for the brains of young people. They aid with the development of spatial awareness, eye movement and eye-hand coordination which helps children when they learn to read. They encourage analytical, abstract, and concrete thinking skills. The youngest children also gain self-confidence and problem solving skills and tend to be are more willing to explore, make mistakes and learn from them.

Jigsaws can have educational content and go so far as to teach basic skills like colors and numbers and about the world arounds us. Further down on this page you will see some great jigsaw puzzles of the human body. Great puzzles make learning these skills fun.

Three and four year old children who worked on puzzles of 100 to 300 pieces learned strategies to talk about the jigsaw puzzle process, the story in the puzzle and experiences a child may have had with relation to the puzzle. A more complex puzzle encourages concentration, coordinating and color matching skills and is fun, too!

There are an endless list of puzzle topics to target the interests of your child. Whatever the interest of your child, there is a puzzle to suit.

Puzzles are also great for us as we age and are proven to help keep older adults minds active. Retirement homes use them to keep the minds of seniors 'alive.'

Jigsaw puzzles are recommended as a method to fight Alzheimers. People who had challenging hobbies like puzzling when they were younger seem to have some protection from Alzheimers.

Puzzles are wonderful social exercises and encourage people to spend more time together. (Turn off the television!) They are a great, inexpensive entertainment source, perfect for any time of the year. They bring people together!

A Life-Size Skeleton Puzzle

For kindergarten aged children.

A fun puzzle! Children can figure out where all the bones go together with this 4 foot 3 inch puzzle. It will be about the same size as a 6 year old. 15 pieces are made of foam that will not bend. Each piece is marked on the back with the real name for each bone. Recommended for children four to six years old.

My search for Halloween jigsaw puzzles revealed that there have been an exciting assortment of Halloween-themed puzzles produced over the years. However, many of them are out of print. I do, therefore, recommend you use eBay as a source.

In case you are not very familiar with eBay, you should know that there are many new puzzles available, including older out-of-print ones. (My eBay store, Treasures By Brenda has lots of hard-to-find puzzles but not necessarily Halloween ones.)

If you choose to buy a used puzzle, I would only consider buying one from a seller who is willing to guarantee that the puzzle is complete. This will either mean that they have worked the puzzle and know it is complete or they are at least willing to refund your money if the puzzle is not complete. Obviously, the first scenario is the better choice and personally, I am unwilling to sell a used puzzle unless it has been worked and determined complete by myself or my family. The choice is up to you but if you are after a specific older puzzle, it may be hard to find a new one and you may have to settle for a used one.

Good luck!

We did a fun icebreaker @ school Halloween party when my kids were little, using very simple Halloween jigsaws. We (rooom parents) mixed up the pieces of 3 puzzles in a trick-or-treat bag and had each kid take one piece. Then to start the party, they each had to find the other kids w/ pieces from that same puzzle & put it together cooperatively. Took all of 5 minutes and was a fun little way to build teamwork. It's amazing how realistic those 3D pumpkin puzzles look! Lens blessed :)

Tony Payne from Southampton, UK on September 18, 2011:

Your lenses are always so interesting. I am never disappointed!
