Halloween Crafts for the Elderly

5 Easy and Fun Halloween Crafts for Seniors

Doing crafts with the elderly can be a fun and rewarding experience. I love watching them use their imaginations to design the different crafts, but my biggest challenge is always finding some new ideas. Holidays always lend themselves to ideas so for the month of October we are using a fall/Halloween theme for all of the crafts.

When I first started volunteering at my Mom's home, I tried to come up with fresh ideas for each time using materials that I had around the house or that I purchased from a craft store. That soon became very challenging to come up with a new craft each week. I have since discovered that there are a lot of craft kits that can be purchased online and that work really well with the group. The projects usually come in sets of 12 which is just perfect for the group at Mom's place. I now use kits about 50% of the time and the rest of the time use ideas I find online or in craft magazines.

I am now writing a series of pages like this on the different crafts I am using. Hopefully it will give the readers some ideas for easy crafts to use with the group and will also serve as a journal for me of the projects that I have used.

Have a Happy Crafty Halloween!

Five Halloween Season Crafts for the Elderly - crafts for nursing homes

  1. Decorate Foam Pumpkins
  2. Decorate and Paint an Mask
  3. Jeweled Leaf Pins
  4. Make a Foam Pumpkin Door Hanger
  5. Draw a Pumpkin Face with Scratch Kit

Decorate Foam Pumpkins - foam pumpkin shape

I have found that decorating foam cut out shapes is an activity that the residents can easily do themselves and seem to enjoy. For our October foam project I have purchased foam shapes like the one in the photo above. They can be found in a variety of sizes at several different stores. I found the ones in the photo in the dollar bins at Target in packs of 12.

I will spread out a variety of fall stickers, small jewels and foam letters on the table in front of the residents. I will also put a small amount of glue in a plastic cup and a wooden popsicle type stick in it to spread the glue. The ladies can then design their pumpkins with the stickers, jewels and letters. After they have laid out their designs they will use their stick to put a bit of glue on the back of each decoration and glue it to the pumpkin.

Last month I glued a small magnet on the back of the foam and this month I think I'll punch a hole in the top and tie a ribbon through it so they can hang them on their walkers or wheelchairs.

Paint a Wooden Mask - a little messy but fun

I found these thin wooden masks at one of the larger hobby shops. I will give one of these to each of the residents and put out a variety of markers and paints for them to decorate the masks. I think this will be a fun Halloween project.

Jeweled Leaf Hanger - colorful fall leaves

Another kit that I thought worked well for the residents was the jeweled leaves. Each resident got a foam leaf and about 9 different jewels and a ribbon to decorate them with. They all worked diligently laying out their designs before they glued the pieces together. Most of the people then hung the finished leaves on their walkers or chairs, but as you can see in the intro photo, my Mom decided she wanted to clip it to her top :)

Pumpkin Door Hanger - colorful and easy to put together

This is the finished door hanger that one of the ladies made last week. Everything came in a kit and they just needed to arrange the pieces of the black door hanger and glue everything together. The project worked well and took about 45 minutes for the ladies to complete. I ordered the kit online from Oriental Trading company.

I love those little pumpkins. They would be fun for any age to decorate. The leaf kits are certainly appropriate for fall and would be pretty decorations around the house. And, those masks are just pure fun! I love all of your craft suggestions!
