Be the Hungry Caterpillar for Halloween or Mardi Gras

In my search for costumes for babies and toddlers, I was so pleased to find a line of costumes from the World of Eric Carle. Every child in the U.S. (probably the world) is familiar with and enjoys reading his book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Now, as the book celebrates its 40th anniversary, children and adults can dress up as Carle's famous Caterpillar and Butterfly. The Very Hungry Caterpillar line of costumes was launched in 2010 and will be a favorite for many Halloweens and Mardi Gras. This costume is also great for book character dress up days and read alouds.

I began my love affair with the work of Eric Carle many years ago when I was a first grade teacher. All of his books are filled with bright colored illustrations and are written in simple, but accurate language that even very young children can understand. As a teacher, I based whole thematic units on his books. As a school librarian, I used them and the associated teaching materials in theme boxes on insects.

Oh how I wish that the costumes would have been available, because I would surely have dressed up as the Very Hungry Caterpillar for our annual Book Character Dress Up Day that was held each October.

Eric Carle's Costume Line

Let me share the costumes and accessories with you. The ones for infants and toddlers are just too cute. I could see a family dressed as different stages of the life cycle of the butterfly. The baby in the caterpillar bunting, the toddler as a caterpillar, too. Then older sister as the butterfly. The whole line is attractive and educational, too.

I'm hoping that the Hungry Caterpillar costumes are just the first in the series patterned after characters in his books, but we'll have to wait and see.

In His Own Words

With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates—will they be friendly?

I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun.”
