Have a Big, Elephant-Sized Day on September 22 - Elephant Appreciation Day!

Elephants! The largest land animal on Earth captivates us by their sheer size. A symbol of wisdom in Asia, famed for their memory and intelligence. A favorite of children in the circus or at the zoo. It is certainly an animal that deserves appreciation and we are happy to find that September 22nd is "Elephant Appreciation Day".

Origin of Elephant Appreciation Day

Elephant Appreciation Day was created in 1996 by a Sarasota, Florida businessman, Wayne Hepburn, who likes elephants. He had received a paperweight of elephants on parade from his daughter as a gift and became fascinated by them. Soon he had a huge collection of elephant books and paraphernalia. His love of elephants led to the creation of this obscure holiday so you & I can stop and enjoy this huge, lumbering beast.

The cleverness of creative craft designers never fail to amaze me. This pattern for a TOOTERPHANT is a perfect example. It's the creation of a young 'mum in the UK whose two young boys encouraged her to use her old crochet skills to make new toys for them. She says "I love fantasy and nature, and so I like to make creatures that might just exist, somewhere.".

To that end we are presented with the most delightful and original plush Elephant... er, Tooterphant ... you'll ever want to meet (and perhaps crochet yourself). Tooterphants are friendly little creatures, similar in shape to elephants but with wide trunks that they like to make tooting noises with. They are also quite acrobatic, and enjoy climbing on top of each other.

The Tooterphant pattern and many other amigurumi crochet patterns for all sorts of cute creatures and geeky guys (like the Star Wars figures in crochet) can be found in her Etsy Shop lucyravenscar.

There has always been such a fascination with elephants, Marsha. Perhaps BECAUSE of their huge size. Thanks for visiting my Elephant Appreciation page.

Elephants are huge but I still find them to be cute for some reason and baby elephants are just adorable.

Having your wooden elephant keep you company while you work online today will most likely bring you wonderful inspiration, Brite-ideas. Terrific idea!

Barbara Tremblay Cipak from Toronto, Canada on September 22, 2014:

They're so smart aren't they. I have a wooden carving of an elephant, I think I'll bring it downstairs and put it beside my laptop to give me more luck as I work! (I'm serious, gonna do it!)

@LoriBeninger: Thanks so much for finding RenaissanceWoman's lens & quiz on elephants. I've shared her page here with yours & mine. :) We should definitely coin a word like "pachydermophile" for our appreciation for and love of Elephants!

LoriBeninger on July 15, 2013:

Hello again - since we Elephant Lovers need to stick together, I thought I'd let you know that I found another Elephantophile (not a real word, of course -- but I'll have to see if there is a word for "elephant lover" - perhaps "pachydermophile"?) on Squidoo. It is RenaissanceWoman2010 and her lens on elephants ( is great and fun, too!

LoriBeninger on July 13, 2013:

I want to celebrate all over again, now! Your lens is so fun (and I WANT one of the Etsy orange elephants with the polka-dot ears). Thank you for the plug for both lens and book...I agree, we elephant lovers should stick together!

RinchenChodron on February 22, 2013:

Fun - nice job on this lens!

CoolKarma on December 27, 2012:

I didn't know there was an elephant appreciation day. I have marked it on my calendar to celebrate in 2013. Amazing animals.

AshleyCarew1 on October 18, 2012:

Got to appreciate an elephant, just not the one in the corner of the room!

Tony Bonura from Tickfaw, Louisiana on October 14, 2012:

I nearly forgot: I do like elephants, but monkeys on the other hand are not worth knowing in my opinion. As much as they look like people, they are really nasty little critters and should be avoided at all costs. That's my opinon which has been formed from knowing many monkeys during my lifetime.

Tony Bonura from Tickfaw, Louisiana on October 14, 2012:

I have never seen any of the African elephants, but when I was In Thailand I got to meet and know two Asian elephants over an eight month period. They were great folks to get to know. Hard workers and fun to be around.

Mamabyrd from West Texas on October 06, 2012:

Very interesting lens Elf It was a fun read and I love all of the elephant pictures.

Nancy Tate Hellams from Pendleton, SC on October 01, 2012:
