Crazy Cat Lady is an Easy Costume Idea

I've never been into buying store bought costumes for my daughter for Halloween. Instead, her and I like to come up with fun and creative costumes that fit her personality. For instance, one year she was a vampire who wore a ballerina costume, an evil fairy, and even a zombie princess. This year when I asked my daughter what she wanted to be for Halloween, she promptly replied " a crazy cat lady." I thought it was a great idea, but worried about how I was going to pull this together.

Creating a Crazy Cat Lady was Easy with One Dozen Plush Cats

One of the best parts about creating my daughter's costumes each year is that I don't have to pay big bucks for her costume. However, I was a bit stumped at how to create a cat lady costume without spending a great deal of money on plush cats. I searched through her room for stuffed cats, but the kittens and cats she had were either too big or too small. Eventually, I was able to purchase a dozen small cats that fit my need perfectly.

How I Created the Perfect Crazy Cat Lady Costume

When the dozen plush cats arrived, I was pleased with their small size. To create my daughter's costume, I used an old robe and safety pins. I strategically placed the cats all over the robe and pinned them with safety pins. I made sure to add cats to the sleeves of the robe, the pockets, and a few on the back.

Adding Accessories to Top Off the Cat Lady Costume for my Daughter

To truly give my daughter that crazy look, I also purchased a Lady Gaga wig for her to wear. As you can see in the picture I included, the Lady Gaga wig was designed to hold pop cans. To age my daughter in her costume, I used gray spray paint and used Coke Zero cans as curlers. In addition to her dozen cats, and Lady Gaga wig, my daughter also carried a FurReal Kitty, which everyone thought was real.

The response to my daughter's costume was extremely positive. She received many compliments and even won an overall prize at a Halloween costume party. It's a cute costume for kids and adults and can be pulled off really fast.

Crazy Cat Lady Recipe

As one would expect with any good costume, you can't simply put the costume on and hope to immediately transform into a, in this case hysterical character. Instead, you have to truly believe you are the person you are pretending to be. To help you or your young daughter do this, I have created a crazy cat lady recipe.

Crazy Cat Lady Ingredients:

  • Appear to be a middle-aged woman
  • Make no mention of boyfriend, husband, or significant other
  • Be the owner of at least a dozen or so cats
  • Refuse to entertain the idea of rehoming any of your precious "babies"
  • Indulge in any other hoarding behaviors or traits
  • Add a touch of "white trash" to make the character truly shine

Have Fun!

Adding the Trailer Park Trash Fabulous Accessories

Since many of you have asked about my daughter's wig and other accessories. I decided to go into more detail about the outfit. Because we live in Ohio and her costume wouldn't be quite the same with a heavy winter coat on top, we layered lots of clothes under the robe.

However, we paid special attention to the layering to make sure the sweatpants were on top. We also searched for the perfect wig. The wig she is wearing was actually a Lady Gaga wig. The wig came with the roller openings ready. Since I drink lots of Coke Zero and I didn't think it was appropriate to put empty beer cans in her wig, I used the Coke cans to give her the perfect look. The wig was also very blonde so I bought a bottle of gray hair paint and gave her the silver fox look.

@CherylsArt: Thanks CreativeArtist. I'm not a fan of cats so we don't have any in our household. But my daughter lives vicariously through stuffed cats.
