It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Snow is falling in many regions of the United States; People are hanging up Christmas lights and putting out decorations; In many places, it's feeling very much like a winter wonderland!
We put up our Christmas tree on Thanksgiving Day. Yes, it was a little early, but my son and I were excited and wanted to decorate. In the days following, we began putting the ornaments on the tree. It is always an enjoyable family time.
This year, I thought it would be fun to make our own ornaments. Many people create adorable Christmas ornaments out of salt dough.
These charming snowflake Christmas ornaments were created using a baking soda dough variation. My son and I had a wonderful time playing with the dough and creating these. He decided to give a few away as gifts to his grandparents. He delivered them early, and everyone loved them!
It's incredibly easy to make the dough, and you only need three ingredients. Put on some Christmas music, gather the kids, and get ready for a fun afternoon or evening!
- Baking soda
- Corn Starch
- Liquid Measuring Cup
- Snowflake Cookie Cutter
- Glitter (I used a glitter hair gel spray)
- Acrylic Gloss Varnish
How to Make the Dough
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 1/2 cups water
- Splash of vanilla, optional.
- Combine ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Stir mixture.
- Add a splash of vanilla if desired.
- Keep stirring.
- Once the mixture starts to boil, it will begin to thicken.
- The dough is done when it starts to resemble the thickness of mashed potatoes.
- Remove from heat.
- Place dough on a cutting board or in a bowl.
- Allow to cool completely. You may put it in the refrigerator to speed up the cooling process.
How to Make the Ornaments
Once the dough has completely cooled, you are ready to get the kids and make some snowflake ornaments!
- Preheat oven to 175 degrees.
- Sprinkle your work space with cornstarch.
- Begin kneading the dough.
- Flatten it out to your desired thickness, or approximately to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Use the snowflake cookie cutter to make your snowflakes.
- Make a small hole at the top of each snowflake for string. I used a pick from a nutcracker set.
- Bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
- Flip the snowflakes over and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes.
- Depending on the thickness of your dough, you may need to cook the ornaments longer to be sure that they are completely dried.
Add Some Finishing Touches
- Lay your snowflake ornaments on a piece of cardboard.
- Spray them with glitter. I used a glitter hair gel spray.
- Flip them over and spray the back, too.
- Allow them to dry.
- Then spray each ornament with an acrylic gloss varnish on both sides.
- Allow them to dry completely.
- Cut pieces of string, thread, or twine for each ornament.
- Hang them up or give them away as gifts.
