Dress Like "Charlie Harper"

Dress like Charlie Harper! Or Do You Want To Copy Manny's (on Modern Family) Cubavera Style!

My husband used to love the TV show Two and a Half Men. I am quite sure that he did not identify with Alan, the younger, geeky brother. I know he did not want to emulate Jake, Alan's kid. So that just left the older brother, Charlie Harper, for him to admire. My man is not a womanizer nor a musician. He does not have a paid maid (unless you count me, his wife, as a paid worker) nor does he drink tiger juice. So what can he like about Charlie? I guess it was the way he dressed! I rather liked Charlie's style--retro casual bowling shirts and cargo shorts, too. (Actually, he liked the humor of the show the best!)

Since Charlie's demise, it seems that the character of Manny Delago from "Modern Family" has picked up the torch for the bowling shirt.

If you like Charlie's and Manny's style, you might be able to find something similar on Keep scrolling down to find some Charlie Harper Shirts you can buy.

Who is Charlie Harper?

He is not real, he is a character on TV--CBS's Two and A Half Men

Charlie Harper is a fictional jingle-writing bachelor living in Malibu. Charlie (formerly the character played by Charlie Sheen before his leaving the series in 2011) is always in cool, casual attire. The 2 and a Half Men's costume designer puts him in comfy retro clothes to reflect his character - laid back and free-spirited. In fact, Charlie has become a virtual catalog for the Hollywood trend of retro fashion. Two-toned, short-sleeved bowling shirts and cabana wear over khaki cargo shorts all gently shout "cool comfort", and Charlie Harper (or Sheen) carries the look off pretty well. He seems most comfortable in camp shirts (basically bowling shirts). CH's look is perfect for his character, who lives in a Southern California beach community.

How much of Charlie Harper's style is Charlie Sheen's? Who can tell? Not me. One thing is certain, the Charlie Harper Style has become identified with Mr. Sheen. I am hoping that Mr. Sheen's personality will not affect the popularity of these classic shirts!

A Classy Bowling Shirt that Charlie would have loved!

Manny's Charlie Harper Style

Cubavera or Guayabera Dress Shirts

Because of Manny's Colombian origins, he would naturally be drawn to the retro look of bowling-type shirts that Charlie Harper would wear. I have seen this style called "cubavera" or "guayabera" on the web or on

The Cubavera shirt shown to the right was found on Amazon. It comes in lots of colors.

Not familiar with Two and a Half Men? - Here is a clip from one of my favorite episodes:

The writers from Two and a Half Men and CSI traded jobs. This is video shows a clip from the episode of Two and a Half Men written by the writers of CSI(LasVegas). Enjoy this video about the experience!

Charlie Harper: clothing icon?

Do you think Charlie Harper was a good dresser? I, personally, will miss the clothes that Charlie Sheen wore on Two and a Half Men.

If you have an opinion, be sure to add it to the comments at the bottom of the page.

As far as the shirt below, I love pairing black with classic khaki shorts. My husband loves cargo shorts and, believe it or not, he actually found a use for each pocket! One can never have too many pockets. The new cell phones out there on the market these days, demand big pockets.

Does Television dictate your fashion style?

Do you think that TV shows like Two and a Half Men can influence what we wear?

I will have to watch Mr Sheen's new show on TV.

steve834 on February 28, 2013:

He has a style that never goes out of fashion - as far as men are concerned!

Elyn MacInnis from Shanghai, China on February 24, 2013:

I think TV shows affects us on so many fronts that my mind is dizzy. I have never seen the show but I love the shirts. Nice shirt for Dad for Father's Day!

@Pat Goltz: That is why I mentioned Manny from the TV show "Modern Family". Thanks!

Pat Goltz on February 14, 2013:

From what I have heard, I'm not sure all fathers would appreciate something from the show. Perhaps offering some fashions from some other shows in addition would be a good idea.

MJ Martin aka Ruby H Rose from Washington State on February 13, 2013:

What a fashion statement these clothes have become! They are super comfortable, that is for sure.

Mickie Gee (author) on February 13, 2013:

@Jillynn: I kind of like the template color, too. Fits nicely.

Mickie Gee (author) on February 13, 2013:

@AlleyCatLane: No, the show is not the same without Charlie Sheen. We no longer watch it on a regular basis.

Mickie Gee (author) on February 13, 2013:

@KANEsUgAr: I am constantly amazed that this page about Charlie is still getting visits. Have you noticed that no one wants to dress like Ashton?

Judith Nazarewicz from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on February 13, 2013:

Great style and I'm sure my older sons are influenced by what Charlie wears on the show. They like that casual look. :-)

MariaMontgomery from Coastal Alabama, USA on February 13, 2013:

I hate those shirts & Charlie's shallow lifestyle. Stopped watching before Charlie Sheen has his very public meltdown. We watched once with the new character, but it just seemed a huge waste of our time. Don't like the show, but love you.

anonymous on February 12, 2013:

I loved the character of Charlie in "Two and Half Men", very entertaining. The serial is fun filled and great to watch.

Very unique lens, it's amazing how many people like Charlie Harper's style.

AlleyCatLane on February 12, 2013:

I preferred him in his tee shirt and pj bottoms. But I loved the character and the show. Hate that he lost the job. The show just isn't the same without him in it.

This is the first time I'm meeting Charlie, and, yes, television has a huge impact on wardrobes.

Jillynn on February 12, 2013:

I love Charlie Harper on Two and a Half Men.

What a great idea for a lens!

Sojourn on April 30, 2010:

Two and a Half Men is my favorite sitcom! The writing is witty and the comedic timing is hysterical. While we try not to watch it in front of our 6 year old, he's too quick for us sometimes. When I joke with him about someday having a wife and kids he says he doesn't need a wife - he wants to be like Charlie and let one of his brothers live with him. I'm going to have to start playing The Waltons, or something, instead. ;)

Cute lens and I love Charlie's style, too. I keep trying to get my older sons to mimic his style - it's casual and charming without being sloppy.

Sharon Weaver from Los Angeles, CA on April 29, 2010:

Two and a Half Men is one of my favorites. This is fun and can't believe there are people who haven't seen the show. Guess I'm just a TV nut.

Mickie Gee (author) on February 14, 2010:

@TreasuresBrenda: Thanks for the suggestion. I added a video clip form the show and a cast picture.

Treasures By Brenda from Canada on February 13, 2010:

Fun lens, it would be great to have a picture of Charlie on it for those of us who have never seen Two and a Half Men.

Heather Burns from Wexford, Ireland on January 02, 2010:

fun! 5*

bdkz on November 25, 2009:

This is so creative!

Addy Bell on November 25, 2009:

What a creative selling lens. I don't watch the show, but I have noticed more of the retro bowling shirt look around lately.

kimmanleyort on November 25, 2009:

Nice lens and very topical. I saw Paula's lens and didn't realize that bowling shirts were so popular.
