Baby's First Ornament for Christmas

If you have a new baby (or multiple babies--twins or triplets, anyone?) this year, Baby's First Christmas ornaments are a must-have for any baby--it is the perfect collectible item for the holiday season that your child will enjoy hanging on the tree year after year. No matter if you are looking for a traditional ornament or personalized ornament for one baby or multiples, this comprehensive listing has many options to choose from. Buying baby's first ornament can also kick-off a lifelong collection; what started as a lonely ornament in the early 80s turned into a robust collection by the time I moved out and set up my own tree.

I loved the idea of buying an ornament every year so much growing up, and I'm excited that this year I can buy my baby his very first Christmas ornament. Now, which to choose?

Great Choices - Collectible and Classic

These are great options for the very first 1st tree decoration your little one will ever have. There are so many to choose from that it's so hard to pick just one. I'll admit that I may have gotten a few, but I can't apologize. You only have this very special occasion to celebrate once. And besides, none of them are very expensive so it's not a hit to the pocketbook! Make sure to have your husband (partner, boyfriend, whatever) help you in this decision; I've found that my husband actually had some very strong opinions on the subject.

Baby Handprint (or Footprint!) - Use Their Handprint To Make Their First Ornament (Aww!)

When they are young, it's even easier to make sure you get a good print because they aren't super-wiggly. If they are a few months old or older, you might need a second person to help you out!

Use this kit to create one of the best keepsakes --your baby's hand or footprint (how much more personalized can you get?)! Do one every year so they can look back and see how they've grown! You can always make your own child's handprint ornament with common kitchen ingredients, too!

I did this in my child's early years and it's still fun for him to this day to see how his handprint has grown.

Remember this!

You don't need just one ornament for baby's first holiday season. Trust me, you need two! When your baby is all grown up and you pass down the ornament, you'll want one for yourself. Maybe you don't need a duplicate for every year, but babies' first Christmas ornaments are special; be sure to keep one just for you.

Traditional or Personalized? - Maybe a mixture of both?

Traditional or Personalized? - While traditional are oh-so-pretty...

I love all things personalized for a baby (I promise, I don't go overboard). It gives an item that special something that states, "I'm a keeper." Many of my ornaments from my personal collection are personalized with my name; it seems my mother had the same mentality I do. Personalized babies' first Christmas baubles are especially helpful if you come from a big family with man children. It completely eliminates the "wait, who is this?" question that is bound to come up several years after purchase! Heck, I only have two brothers--two boys--and there were occasionally items from our childhood that we have no idea who they belonged to!

Personalized Options

They are so affordable, be sure to get one for Grandma, too. Below is one example, but there are many personalized ornaments (just click the link!) that make for fabulous gifts for new parents and grandparents! Any of these can be made with any year; sometimes the photography will show an older date, but don't worry, it's all completely customizable.

Below are just a few options, but there are so many more to choose from.

Cute Personalized Ornament

How cute is this personalized ornament? You can edit the year at the bottom of the ornament to whichever year you'd like - no worries if you're getting it a few years after the official 1st Christmas.

Include a photo of your little one to remember what he or she looked like during their first holiday season!

I like the traditional red and white styling. I think this would also look great with a black and white photo.

This ornament is available in boy-girl, girl-girl, and of course boy-boy. It's available at the link I've posted.

This option comes in both blue and pink (and I think even green) if yellow isn't your thing. There are a zillion other options as well, if you don't like this design.

Isn't it so hard to find ornaments for triplets? This is one of my favorites out there because it's sweet and innocent.

My Tradition

It started in 1981

I was supposed to be a January, 1982 baby, however, I arrived in November 1981. It was a bit of a surprise to my parents (coming so early), however my mother wasted no time buying my very first Christmas ornament. It was a little mouse with angle winds holding a horn, and it's always the first I find to hang on my tree, year after year. Each year, I'd get a new one (as would my brothers, who came later) or two, and my collection grew quickly. Some year, I'd get a more traditional option in which my mom would write my name and date on the back; others years, I got a personalized one.

I'm not sure exactly how she parted with them after I moved out. She spent considerable time finding the perfect one each year. When I was 16, for example, she found me a dough ornament (remember those?) of a young driver in her first car, holding a license. I also have baubles from the years I was in Girl Scouts or in gymnastics. I love looking at these year and year and I am already starting this tradition with my own children.

I'm making sure to get duplicates of the ones that are truly special; the goal is to give these to my kids just like my mom did, however, there are some that I won't be able to just give away. I'll want them for my own tree, too. That's totally normally, to want to hold on to a little bit of their childhoods...right? :) Either way, I've got a ton of time to think about that and to build an amazing collection that they will be proud of someday.

I still stand that it's always great to get a mixture of both. The customized ones tend to be more my favorites, though. There's just something about having something that has the child's name and the actual date on it -- it's like it carves out a little moment in time. Plus, you can often pick out options that have you or your child's favorite colors and themes. Of course, no matter which you choose, as long as you love it, it's 100% the right choice!
