Amanda Seyfried Red Riding Hood Costume

Red Riding Hood

On the way to grandma's house.....

Wouldn't it be fun to dress up like red riding hood especially Amanda Seyfried from the movie she plays in. Amanda Seyfried plays Valerie in the new medieval Red Riding Hood movie. She is the girl who takes an unfortunate trip to grandma's house. This tale takes on a dark Gothic twist as opposed to the classic fairy tale. She is a damsel who lives in a medieval village plagued by wicked mythological werewolves. Sounds enchanting, huh?

When I was younger I had a little red riding hood cape I used to wear for Halloween. I loved it so much I wore it a few years in a row. Then I out grew it and I never dressed up like that since. Now years later I'd like dress up like the grown up one; like Amanda because I love her dress. It's so perfect. I've decided to put together her outfit for Halloween. Let's take a look to see what I've come up with. See if it comes close to it.

Valerie's Costume

Renaissance Blue Dress

As you can see Amanda wears a blue renaissance dress for her attire. Finding the right one might take a little looking around. There are usually different variations such as short to long sleeves to even the color. It may be light or dark color. Even though you may not find one exactly the same it's always nice to add your own style to a closely related costume of who you are dressing up as. With these type of dresses you can wear them not only for Halloween but to a Renaissance Fair nearby. How fun is that to use your dress for more than one occasion.

This dress matches pretty close to the style and color of the dress Amanda wore in the movie that I've found. It has long sleeves not short so it is a bit different but that's okay. The hip part of the dress has that same look though. I really like the style of this dress. It would be so fun to wear.

Red Cloak - Just like Amanda's

The most important costume garment is the red cloak. This is really what sets off the whole costume. Red is such a vibrant color. She wears this on her way to her grandma's house. As she walks through the woods she pulls the hood up over her head and hangs tightly onto her basket hoping to not run into the terrible werewolf.

As a little girl I used to have a red cape that I wore trying to be red riding hood. I loved it so much I wore it for a few years in a row than I out grew it. Now I wouldn't mind dressing up again as red riding hood and getting this gorgeous red cape. I bet I could just wear it for more than just a costume right?

More Costume Pieces

Other items that you would need for this costume would be possible be:

  • Long blonde wig
  • Tooth necklace
  • Renaissance boots

If you don't have blonde or long hair you will need a wig. Amanda also wears a tooth looking necklace around her neck in the movie so wearing one would add to the costume. Then you will need those comfy suede renaissance looking boots for your feet. Those boots could be worn anytime as well. You do have to go walk to grandma's so you want to have comfy footwear. What's fun about most of this whole costume outfit, you can wear most of these items again for other occasions or just out and about.

The movie is so different from the original classic but the costume is pretty neat.

I love the red cape - I've never been a cape person for a coat, but if that red cape was shorter (waist) with a hood like that, gheesh, to heck with halloween, I would wear it for the Fall

Cheryl Fay Mikesell (author) from Mondovi, WI on September 10, 2014:

Thanks Merrci! I think it would be to wear. I love the cape! I'd probably wear it around town just to see the funny stares.

Great costume! It looks like it would actually be comfortable to wear too! Love the cape. A girl can never have too many capes. Nicely moved from Squidoo to Hub!
