Wizard of Oz Costumes

Costumes from the Wizard of Oz

The legendary characters from the Wizard of Oz are among the most recognizable fictional characters in the world, and that amazing group of people and animals are fantastic for a Halloween costume or cosplay.

What's great about the Wizard of Oz, is it not only lends itself to group costumes, but the story itself almost demands that there be more than one character represented.

After all, what is the Tin Man without the Scarecrow, the Scarecrow without the Cowardly Lion, and all of them without Dorothy?

Even better, there are all sorts of secondary characters to indulge your Halloween fantasies in if you choose. You could be Glinda the good witch, the Wizard of Oz himself, or even one of the evil witch's flying monkeys.

If you're into props, you can even buy a pair of the slippers of the witch in the story that had the building fall on her. Great fun.

Wizard of Oz costumes will work for both children and adults.

Wizard of Oz

We'll start off with a look at some homemade Wizard of Oz costumes, highlighting the major characters in the story. It shows how you can, with a little work, create some wonderful costumes. I don't know if it's just me, but that young lady is almost an exact image of Dorothy as played by Judy Garland.

Now to me, the scarecrow could have used a little more work, but then again, I guess he always did.

Dorothy, Lion and Tin Man Children's Costumes

Even though the Scarecrow isn't in this photo, I had to include this very cute photo of the children in their costumes. That look on the little girl dressed as Dorothy is precious.

It does show that you don't need to have all of the characters to make the group Wizard of Oz costume effort look good.

Wicked Witch and Tin Man Costumes

While the wicked witch retains the original Wizard of Oz feel, while the Tin Man is definitely not the Tin Man our mothers watched with us on the show. It does show how you can get creative and still let people know exactly who it is you're dressed up as. It's that hat on her head that give it away.

Group Costumes of Wizard of Oz Characters

Here's a look at a different group dressed in costumes of the main characters of the Wizard of Oz. Nice looking costumes, and Dorothy carrying Toto on her arm is great, as is the Tin Man with his axe.

As for going out dressed in a group costume theme, it doesn't get much better than the Wizard of Oz, especially when going as the four main characters. But as mentioned earlier, if you have a larger group, there are plenty of other interesting characters in the show to draw from for costume inspiration.

Homemade Wizard of Oz Costumes

Here's a creative and hilarious take on the Wizard of Oz theme. The homemade costumes give us another look at the variety of ways you can make Wizard of Oz costumes; but the highlight here is the Cowardly Lion. Don't see him? He's the donkey in front dressing as the king of beasts; although that phrase definitely weakens in light of the somewhat dismal donkey. He reminds you more of Eeyore than of the lion. But I guess before he got inspired by the Wizard he wasn't much better. Great photo.

It's also a good example of the secondary characters you can dress up as from the show.

Wizard of Oz Costumes

That was a lot of fun looking at the Wizard of Oz costumes, and that's just a drop in the bucket as to the props and accessories you can include with the characters. But if you're just hanging out with family and friends, the costumes are enough, although you can get as elaborate as you want for props and accessories if you're into more detail.

These are so cute! Its such a classic set of costumes, I love the idea! Voted up!

Gail Sobotkin from South Carolina on September 13, 2011:

Voted up across the board! The Wizard of Oz is my favorite childhood movie and it does lend itself well to Halloween parties and trick or treating for all the reasons you've stated in this hub.

I live in Southern Delaware and the Town of Rehoboth beach has a boardwalk costume parade and also a pet parade each year at the annual Sea Witch Festival. Dorothy and her little dog Toto are perennial favorites along with the other characters from the Wizard of Oz.
