Visiting Portsmouth, England

Linda loves to travel to different places whenever she gets the chance and the money saved to spend. Bournemouth is a great place to see.

Visiting Portsmouth, England

Portsmouth is one of the most beautiful places I visited in the South of England and would not mind visiting again. It is a large city with an important naval and commercial port in Hampshire.

It is packed with different shops, hotels, B&B's and guest houses, restaurants and cafes, bars, museums, historical ships like the HMS WARRIOR 1860, churches and beautiful sceneries especially when you go up the Spinnaker Tower.

The views you will see from the view decks of the Spinnaker Tower is wonderful, breathtaking and so beautiful as you will see in the photos that I am going to share.

The first thing that caught my eye as soon as we arrived in Portsmouth for a few days holiday was the Spinnaker Tower and the big beautiful ship called the HMS WARRIOR 1860 and lots of Ships, shops, restaurants, cinemas and so many things to see and do.

HMS Warrior 1860

As we arrived at Portsmouth coach station, we were greeted by this stunning large ship at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard. The world's first iron-hulled, armoured warship powered by steam as well as sail. The only surviving member of Queen Victoria's Black Battle Fleet. Beautifully restored and it looks fantastic.

It makes me wonder, how many people died on this ship during the war. Warrior now serves as museum, monument and visitor attraction and is open all year round for you to experience for yourself. Open daily from 10:00am except 24th, 25th, and 26th of December.

Those who want their wedding to be different and memorable, the HMS WARRIOR 1860 is for hire for wedding and party venues offering a blend of style, history and atmosphere that will make your event truly memorable.

The Spinnaker Tower

The Spinnaker Tower is one of the tourist attractions in Portsmouth aside from the Gunwharf Quays Shopping Centre near the Tower, Cascades Shopping Centre, the Historic Naval Ports and the beautiful surrounding areas.

The Spinnaker Tower is a good place to view the surroundings of the Portsmouth Port. Once you get up there, the view from different angles is so beautiful especially on a bright sunny day. It felt like I was on top of the world looking down on beautiful sceneries around me that is so amazing to see.

View Deck 1 – First floor landing of the Spinnaker Tower

To go up the tower, you pay the entrance fee at the base of the Tower and then the lift attendants will led you to a lift and escort you to the top of the Tower. The first landing is called View Deck 1, as soon as we got out of the lift and walk near the glass windows everyone said "Wow" because of the beautiful views that you can see at all angles of the View Deck. Cameras all clicking from every visitor including us.

The panoramic views across the City, Harbour, Sea and Coastline is breath taking and fantastic. I can't explain how excited I was to take photos of the lovely views from every corner of the View Decks. We were lucky as well because it was a nice sunny day when we went up the Spinnaker Tower.

Sky Walk – is a large glass floor in the middle of View Deck1 where you experience looking down from 100m above sea level. I have to hold the bars at the side to go on it because it is quite scary looking down. Before you go on the glass floor, the staff will ask you to remove your shoes. This is not good for those afraid of heights really. But it is a good experience to try.

View Deck 2 – 105m(344 feet) is where you can have a cup of hot drinks or cold drinks with cakes or biscuits. It is nice to drink a cup of coffee and enjoy the beautiful views from all corners of the View Deck and take more photos. This View Deck 2 is the floor next to View Deck 1.

Sky Deck

Sky Deck – altitude 110m(360 feet) the highest and last view deck with outstanding long distance views. The highest point of the Spinnaker Tower that let you see long distance views. After this, we walked down the stairs to go to View Deck 1 where we took the lift to go down.

On the base of the Tower, there is a Souvenir shop which sells all the usual things like hats, fridge magnets, pens, cards etc. And on the sides are cafes and restaurants where people enjoy their hot and cold drinks plus food as well. On the side of the Tower is a rope for people who are brave enough to do abseiling. I saw a man abseiling up and down during our visit.

New Additions on the Spinnaker Tower since our last visit to Portsmouth is the I-View I-pad which is an interactive interpretation-multi-touch screens which allow you to find out more about the many points of interest in the view, zoom in to get a closer look and switch between a clear day or magical nighttime view. The I-View allows access to the view - whatever the weather.

The City Centre --- Big shopping place in Portsmouth

This is my favourite shopping place in Portsmouth. The City centre is the main shopping area in Portsmouth mainly sited around the shopping streets Commercial Road, Edinburgh Road, Arundel Street, Crasswell Street, and Charlotte Street.

The City is home to the Cascade Shopping Centre and major high street stores including Debenhams, Wilkinson, The Body Shop, Next, Moss, H&M and supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury, and Iceland. To the North of the city is the Victory Retail Park. I spent a whole day going around the shops here which I really enjoyed.

Portsmouth is a beautiful place to visit and there are lots of things to do like shopping, going up the Spinnaker Tower, visiting the Museums, touring the Harbour by the ferry, going to the Isle of Wight for the day, and lots of bars and restaurants to drink and eat. If you fancy a day out to the Isle of Wight, there is a ferry that goes to the Isle of Wight throughout the day and comes back to the port.

There are cinemas to go to and if you got children, there are lots of things to amuse them. There is a ferry also that takes visitors around the Port. Portsmouth caters for all ages needs.

How to get to Portsmouth

We live in East Sussex and we used the coach to get there but you can also use the trains to get there from Brighton. The train cost more to travel to Portsmouth but it gets there quicker. It is more cost effective for us to use the coach. I suppose the ferries or ships are also good to use to get to Portsmouth.

What to do in Portsmouth

We are all different but for me, I like the shopping places there and also the nice restaurants. The good thing about Portsmouth is, it caters for all ages. There are plenty to do like shopping, going to the cinemas, eating and drinking at the different kinds of restaurants that cater for everyone's needs, and going on the ferries to explore the seaside and surrounding areas of Portsmouth.

You can also do a day trip to the Isle of Wight if you like. There are Museums to go and see. Or you can just chill out at the seaside bars and restaurants and just enjoy the nice atmosphere.

Where to stay in Portsmouth

There are lots of hotels, guest houses, and bed and breakfast places where you can stay. When we first went to Portsmouth, we used the Travel Lodge hotel which is quite cheap but good hotel. We used a bed and breakfast place which was also very good as well and reasonable in price when we went the second time. We were lucky to have found those places. Prices are reasonable and quite clean with good food.
