Valentine's Day Home Décor: Decorating Craft Ideas

Rose is a full-time freelance writer who frequently writes about education, special education, DIY projects, food, Milwaukee, and more.

I am not a fan of most of the traditional Valentine's gifts and would prefer to make something meaningful that we can display in our home for many years. Valentine's Day decorations are perfect for anyone looking for a different type of gift, a project to make with kids, or a simple way to add a little more love to the home. Most of these ideas are inexpensive, primarily require materials that can obtained at most craft and/or hardware stores, and can completed in a single afternoon. Happy creating!

Love Me Tender Valentine's Décor

Beautiful love printables and simple wooden plaques transform into a sweet piece of décor that is fitting for any time of the year. The red works well for Valentine's Day, but you can mix up the colors to match your home décor. If you love this concept but aren't crazy about these particular printables, customize this concept to fit your own preferences.

Felt and Twine Valentine Hanging Hearts

This simple sewing project won't intimidate even the most novice sewers, and the result is still very satisfying. Once you get started, you'll have more hearts that you ever need to decorate your home. The author hangs her hearts from a little tree. They would also work well on doorknobs, hooks, and more. For an extra touch, embellish these little hearts with ribbons, sequins, beads, and more.

Tree of Hearts

The author designed this project for a K-5 after school group. While this is a great project to do with kids, there is no reason that adults can't enjoy this on their own, too. Create a small tree with watercolors and turn it into a Valentine's Day card or create a large tree with oil paints on canvas that you can hang. The author has some great tips about the step by step process for painting the tree and the hearts.

Crayon Hearts Window Decoration

Crayon hearts sounds like a perfect kids' project, but the process of making crayon shavings and ironing isn't actually very kid friendly. This is more appropriate for middle school age and up. The effect is still very beautiful, though. There aren't decorations included for how to hang these from a window so you may need to rig something up, such as nails or hooks, if you don't want to use tape.

Valentine's Day Subway Art

Keep it simple with one of the latest trends: subway art. This post includes a free download of the pictured Valentine's Day subway art. The author switched hers into a frame she used for a Christmas subway print and then added the banner at the top. Keep it fresh all year long with different prints. This post also includes an idea for a great, inexpensive Valentine's Day candy bowl.

Heart Box

Scout the dollar stores or dollar sections of Target and Michael's for heart decorations like this so you can create an adorable heart box. This is a great gift you can put together with kids to give to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. The picket fence is a particularly whimsical touch. Personalize this with a note or other little extra detail.

Paper and Felt Heart Chain Garlands

Create simple garlands with paper or felt to adorn mantels, windows, classrooms, and more. This article gives instructions for creating both paper and felt garlands with two different variations for the felt. The sewing work for the second felt chain is very minimal, making the assembly process for both chains quick and straightforward.

Love Note Pillows

Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to create a little set of these awesome love note pillows. You can add them to your regular home décor or simply enjoy pulling them out every February to change up your seasonal décor. Either way, I don't know how you can resist this neat design. The little pocket in the heart pillow is an especially sweet touch. This is a great gift for anyone who is passionate about writing or the written word.

Printable Alphabet Bunting

Create any message that you like for Valentine's Day with this free printable alphabet bunting. This color palette is soft and romantic so it fits well for Valentine's Day, but there's no reason why you can't use these letters for many other occasions as well such as birthdays, baby showers, and wedding showers. Simply print and string.

Valentine Light bulb

If you're looking for something different and up to the challenge of hollowing out a light bulb, this is the project for you. This is definitely a little more adventurous than many of the paper craft and sewing projects here, but the result is definitely worth it. You can customize the message on the front and add any other details that you like.

Heart Doilies with Christmas Lights

I love Christmas lights and am always looking for an excuse to use them out of season. This is perfect. There are no directions for making this garland, but it's pretty self-explanatory. Christmas lights will make a great addition to many other types of Valentine's Day garlands as well.

Book Heart Art

This is another great Valentine's Day idea that is perfect for anyone who loves books or the written word. This is also a piece of décor that is functional year round if you don't want to put it away after Valentine's Day. Again, there are no directions here, but the concept is pretty self-explanatory. You can use any kind of frame and can customize the words. If you don't want to cut up a book you have at home, pick up a used one from a thrift store.
