The Origin of Celebrating Christmas in July

Actual Christmas in July

There is a reason that the December winter holiday is spoken of so much during the summer, specifically the seventh month. According to Day Finder, Christmas in July is a way to have some fun between Independence Day and Labor Day, a period. with no other special occasions. People living in the southern hemisphere experience cold weather during the summer months so they actually have their holiday observance during the seventh month of the year. In Australia, it’s often 90 degrees during Christmas. The reason there is a July observance is so they can celebrate the joy of the holiday just like folks in the northern hemisphere. Retailers, merchandisers, and Internet businesses use the theme of Christmas in July to capitalize upon and cash in on profits from sales. There were more television commercials, flyers in the mail and newspaper advertisements in 2019 than usual.

Wikipedia reports that in 1942, the Calvary Baptist Church located in Washington. D.C. had a Christmas in July celebration, complete with carols and a sermon entitled "Christmas Presents in July." The church had a repeat performance in 1943, and this time there was a Christmas tree decorated with donations. The money was used to kick-off fundraising for worldwide missions. This became an annual event, and in 1945, the Christmas in July service began being broadcast over a local radio station. I can just imagine people trying to pretend its cold and snowing, during the hottest time of year,

Pretending it's Christmas

I can recall as a young girl, how children would pretend Santa was bringing presents in July.. In later years I have enjoyed television stations running holiday programming because it got my mind off of the summer heat and on anticipating the upcoming holiday. I know people who actually begin their shopping in July or layaway gifts so they can have it all completed before Thanksgiving. There is a movie from 1940 entitled "Christmas in July" and QVC really puts you in the holiday mood with bargains on their products every year at this time. The MeTV network shows Christmas episodes of classic television programs during July.

There is always contention with the actual December holiday from three different viewpoints. Non-believers who enjoy the season but don't acknowledge Christ, the Christians who say Christ is being taken out of the season, and believers who say the holiday is pagan and should not be observed. The bottom line is that all people have a right to celebrate or not as a personal choice. If someone chooses to dress up as Santa or elves in July that is a free will decision.

Those who do observe the birth of Christ during the winter holiday and want to get in on Christmas in July may want to study what history says about the time of year He was born. The Christians who originated celebrating on December 25, never said this was His actual born day. They picked the date to take focus from the pagan winter solstice observances which were considered very worldly. Jewish historians believe Christ was born in warm weather during the same season as lambs because the Bible says in John 1:29 that He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. His birth has been estimated to be sometime between March and September.

If you are a believer in Jesus and would like to enjoy Christmas in July here are some tips. Read the first two chapters in Matthew and Luke that describe events from the birth of John the Baptist to the wise men finding the Christ child in a house. In many churches, these scriptures are only read during December. but you can study any scripture you desire whenever you choose in the privacy of your own home.

I have a Little Golden Book that I read all through the year. It's entitled "The Animal's Christmas Eve." This is a darling fictitious account of the night that Christ was born. Various farm animals are talking among themselves one Christmas Eve abut how each of their ancestors was in the stable the night Jesus came into the world. It's a sweet rhyming story that will surely touch the heart of those who love the first Christmas story. I'm going to read my Little Golden Book several times this month.

This article is full of unique information and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I didn't think anyone in the U.S. celebrated Christmas in July, but everyone has a right to do what they want. As a Christian, I don't want to take Christ out of Christmas and that is a part of our celebration.
