The Dollar Store Is the Best Store for Stocking Stuffers!

It's getting out of hand at my place!

The Dollar Store Is Your Friend

It is Christmas shopping season, and everyone is out to get the best deal. While you are searching for the best gifts at the best prices, don't forget that you will need some stocking stuffers. I suggest you do not wait the last minute for those types of items. The place you need to go for your stocking stuffers is definitely the dollar store.

Most towns have a least one dollar store. If you have a large Dollar Tree in your area, you are in luck! I just went to the one in my neighborhood and spent way more money than anyone should spend at a place where everything is just a buck. However, I have walked away an extremely happy shopper.

Not only can you get dirt cheap stocking stuffers, you can also get all your gift wrap, bows, ribbons, Christmas cards, tissue paper, Christmas gift bags, and more for only $1 a piece. There is something reassuring about picking up item after item and knowing it's just one dollar. So let's discuss some of the awesome things you can get at the dollar store.

Dance, Mr. Snowman, dance!

Dance, Mr. Snowman, dance!

Dancing Solar Snowman

So I know what you are thinking... what is a dancing solar snowman and why on earth do I need one? Chances are that you don't need one. But do you want one? Do you want to buy some to give as gifts? I say the answer to those questions are, "Yes!"

I saw the solar dancing flower in a drugstore this past spring for Easter and immediately wanted it. It was priced at $3.99 at the time, so I decided to leave it there. However, I love tacky, ridiculously cute items for my desk and I've thought about that flower a lot. Imagine my delight when I walked in the Dollar Tree today to find a full table of dancing snowmen and dancing penguins! Each adorable dancing item was only $1 a piece.

To make a long story short, I bought two dancing snowmen and two dancing penguins. I will be giving away three as gifts. However, one happy solar dancing snowman is sitting in front of my window right now. And yes, that little guy is dancing away! The sun coming in through the window is enough to keep him dancing all day.

A dancing solar snowman or a dancing solar penguin make perfect stocking stuffers. I would not necessarily recommend them for very small children, but they are perfect for older children and adults (like me!) that never quite grew up. They look perfect on a desk, a window, or even as a Christmas decoration.

Puzzle Books

The dollar store is the place to go for puzzle books. My mother loves crossword puzzles and sudokus, but the price in grocery stores or even discount stores can be a bit high. I've paid anywhere from $2.99 to $5 for a nice puzzle book for my mother. At the dollar store, you can usually get reasonably thick books for only $1 per book.

Puzzle books are awesome stocking stuffers for adults that enjoy puzzles. Aside from crossword puzzle books and sudoku books, the Dollar Tree also had a nice variety of word find books and variety puzzle books. The best part of the deal is being able to get a few books for the price I would ordinarily have paid for one book anywhere else.

Coloring Books and Crayons

After you've bought puzzle books for the adults and older children in your life, don't forget to pick up some coloring books for smaller children. There are plenty of books to choose from for $1 a piece. Some feature actual cartoon characters from television shows or movies. If you are looking for something more generic, there are also coloring books featuring farm animals, cars, and more.

If you'd like to get a new box of crayons for the Christmas stocking, there are also many choices for those as well for just $1 a piece. There are jumbo crayons for smaller children or regular crayons for older children who enjoy coloring. Also, you can get a box of crayons that are just primary colors or just pastel colors. Crayons and coloring books are fun stocking stuffers for any future artist in your life.

Pig and cow

Small Stuffed Animals

A perfect stocking stuffer is a stuffed animal. Most little kids love getting a stuffed animal for Christmas and most adults love only paying $1 for a stuffed toy. Currently at the Dollar tree, there are two different bins of stuffed animals. One bin features all the Christmas stuffed toys, like Santa, a snowman, reindeer, etc. The other bin has all sorts of other animals, such as dogs, monkeys, and pigs.

My friend's son happens to love cows and you'd be surprised how difficult it is to find a nice stuffed cow. Much to my surprise, the Dollar Tree actually had two types of cow stuffed animals. So if you know a kid that really wants a cow for Christmas, but can't find them anywhere, now you know to head over to Dollar Tree. They also had a really cute elephant in case you can't find one of those anywhere either.

Last, but never least, is the candy that goes into any stocking. You just can't buy stocking stuffers without buying candy. All dollar stores always have an awesome supply of candy. This year is no exception. Right now, there is a great variety of boxes of assorted chocolates, thin mints, candy canes, and more. Most children expect candy in their stocking, and honestly, so do many adults. When it comes to candy for the Christmas stocking, you can buy plenty of it at the dollar store.

When you are shopping this holiday season, make sure to find a dollar store and get the basics from there. You won't regret it! If you feel like spending more than just a dollar on items, don't forget to visit the Family Dollar or the Dollar General. Both stores have a number of items for just $1, but they do offer a number of low-priced deals for more money. After all, I bought a fiber optic Christmas tree from the Dollar General one year for only $15. It is still pretty awesome years later. So make sure to drop by your local dollar store this year for your Christmas stocking stuffers, and maybe even some holiday decorations while you are there.

Wow, you've gotten a lot of great bargains. I tend to get all my hair accessories at the dollar store. Why pay $4 for scrunchies at Walmart (and yes, I still use scrunchies!) when I can get them for a $1 at the dollar store? I am just going to lose most of them anyway. Thank you for your comment!

I decorated and furnished (dishes etc) my entire first apartment with really cute Dollar Tree plates, wash cloths dish towels, glasses etc and for once everything had a match...the Dollar Tree where I live is notorious for having mixed matched plates and glasses much less towels to go with it all....and forget stocking stuffers I give entire Christmas gifts from the dollar store--sometimes they have cute picture frames! hehe

I just love the dollar store! Also, because I don't really live within walking distance of one, I get so excited when I go to dollar store. You would think I was stepping in a luxurious new place or something. :-) Sorry you don't have dollar stores... pound stores sound interesting though. Thanks for the comment!

Chantele Cross-Jones from Cardiff on October 11, 2012:

Our pound stores are nowhere near as good as the dollar stores in the US! Its not fair, I got some amazing crafting and jewellery making supplies when I was out there!

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on March 18, 2012:

Yes, the dollar store is absolutely wonderful. It is OK to start a little late going to the dollar store. Better late than never. :-) Thanks for checking out my hub!

I started going to the dollar store when my oldest child started college--late I know for such a find--but a great place to find things for care packages for college kids--

I certainly hope you do get some good deals in Canada. It seems like such a nice place to live; hopefully, your dollar stores are nice, too! Thanks for the comment.

I always find great deals there, too. My favorite is to search the books. Usually they are hardcover editions and I have found great gifts at a steal of a price.

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on November 27, 2011:

EssentialGreeting - Yes, the dollar store is a great place, even if some things can be a little "cheap" looking. It is easy just to buy the cute items instead.

Esmeowl12- That makes a lot of sense. The price is right and the items are perfect for kindergarteners.

Alecia Murphy - The dollar store is perfect for generic gifts. I am so giving one of those dancing snowmen as a work gift this year.

Thanks everyone for reading and posting comments!

I think the dollar store is your friend. Especially when it comes to gifts for people you don't know as well. Great Hub!

Cindy A Johnson from Sevierville, TN on November 27, 2011:

The dollar store is THE place to go for gift giving ideas. It was also a fabulous place for me to shop for treats for my kindergarten students when I was teaching.

EssentialGreeting on November 27, 2011:

Ive always wondered why people dislike the dollar store, seeing it as cheap or something. A great hub none the less!
