For summertime grilling and specifically with the 4th of July right around the corner, many of us naturally reach for pricy steaks--rib-eyes, filet mignons--but they aren't the only cuts in the case. Thin steaks, like flank, skirt or flatiron are perfect candidates for marinades. I have tried a few cuts for this marinade, but the best and tastiest for this specific marinade is flank.

Preparation for Marinade and Cook Time for Steak

6 people

  • 2 Tbs. Olive Oil
  • 2 Tbs. Balsamic Vinegar
  • 2 Tbs. Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 Tbs. Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tb. Dijon Mustard
  • 1 Tsp. Garlic Powder
  • 1 1/2 pounds Thin, Flank Steak

  1. Mix oil, vinegar, Worcestershire Sauce and soy sauces, mustard and garlic powder, pour into a gallon-size zipper-lock bag, add steak and let marinade for at least 30 minutes or up to 3 hours. (I have found 3 hours is optimal if you can for the marinade to really take effect).
  2. Heat gas grill, lightening all burners on high for at least 10 minutes or build a hot charcoal fire. Add steak, close lid and grill, turning only once to desired doneness, 3 1/2 minutes per side for medium rare and about 4 minutes per side for medium.
  3. Let rest for 5 minutes.
  4. Slice thin and serve.

A Side Note...

On a side note, my husband and I have bought and tried many different marinades and none of them have even come close to this marinade for Flank Steak we happened to just stumble upon. I hope you try it and love it as much as our family does. One last thing, Happy Grilling!!!

Mary, I am so happy to be able to share this marinade with you and others on Hubpages. I do hope you get to try. My mom recently told me that after I have raved about this marinade that she is going to finally try to make it, because she can't stop thinking about it!! So I may have converted my mom who just uses salt and pepper to cook her steaks. Thank you also for the votes, share, pin and tweet too!!

I'm happy to have this marinade recipe as I always have the ingredients in the pantry (except the steak, of course). It would be great with a stack of homemade corn tortillas on the side. Thanks!

Looks delicious! I'm trying to be vegetarian now, but I'm not sure I would be able to resist this :) My friend used to do a similar marinade and it is so good - I think the key is the Worcestershire sauce. We will definitely try your recipe this summer - perfect timing for grilling season!

We've also always had great luck getting yummy and cheap flank steak from Costco. Great idea for a delicious and cheap grill recipe!

kelleyward on June 26, 2012:
