Love is All Around

Symbolize Your Love of Friendship

Symbols of love and friendship are all around. Like the saying, a picture paints a thousand words, so do symbols express what words can never do. And like the Rose, it speaks not a thing yet says it all. The fragrance and colors express feelings unsaid. Politely it whispers 'I love you' and sets a mood and is known to help where words can often fail.

For Valentine's Day, just about anything can symbolize your love to a friend that they can keep and cherish forever.

We love to know how others feel about us. It somehow validates who we are and warms our little hearts.

Here are some symbols of love and friendship I have found that are still being used and passed between friends today.

Friendship bracelets - a braided bracelet made of string to be worn on the wrist of a friend until it breaks symbolizing the worth of that friendship. The bracelets are made by the giver of both male and female mostly during the tween years.

Friendship stones - a little pouch of gemstones to be kept in the pocket or worn around the neck symbolizing the wish that you made for your friend or the luck and happiness that the gems would bring.

Royal crown tattoo - a royal crown over two hands clasped inside a heart shape is the symbol of a king-sized friendship. Other tattoos used are the celtic and asian friendship symbols.

Jade plant - the green juicy leaves of this friendship tree has been said to spread joy and happiness between two friends. It surrounds the friendship with the essence of love. Friends love to give the jade plant as a housewarming gift.

Harmony turtle - a symbol of blessings, harmony and long life. The turtle helps to preserve and protect the friendship.

Interlinked hearts - hearts side by side symbolize togetherness.  It is a good omen for a lasting relationship and for good fortune.

Arrows of friendship - In Native American cultures two arrows together is symbolic of bringing togeher two people or two tribes for the common goal of both parties as well as friendship.

Turquoise stones - symbolizes protection and steady growth and strength to a friendship.

Amazonite egg - a hope stone that is meant to open communication between friends.

Red or black coral - a symbol of life force energy for your friendship.

Unakite stone - a symbol to uplift your friends spirits.

Malachite stone - symbol of appreciation of your friendship.

Hematite stone - a symbol of good health for your friend.

Rhodonite ball - aka the 'rescue stone' surrounding the friendship with strength and stability symbolizing a strong bond of friendship same as the red-tipped rose.

Promise ring - exchange of rings in the name of friendship.

A ceramic angel - symbolizes all friends forming one angelic spirit.

A stuffed teddy bear - a symbol that shows how much you care and how comforting your friendship can be.

Red rose - shows love, signifies beauty and romance.  A single red rose is the most special way to say "I Love You".

Yellow rose with a red tip - given as a symbol of a true bond of friendship.

White rose - symbolize loyalty and sincere love.

Pink rose - symbolizes gratitude and appreciation. It depicts elegance and grace with a touch of gentleness.

Orange rose - a symbol of togetherness and represents the spirit of unity.

Peach rose - a symbol of anticipation and hope for the future.

Purple rose - symbolize love at first sight.

Free Hugs

A smile, a hug or a simple hello - to show they are your friends and they care about you.

A secret handshake - only the two of you know and use to show that you both like each other.

A high five - used between friends to show you did a good job or that they just wanted to say hello.

Using a nickname - that shows a friend that you know them and would like to know them better.

Love and friendship symbols are very random and different for all races and customs. Some friends will kiss each other on each cheek and if that works for them then that is all that matters.

Friends will come by the many but only a few are lasting. They are the ones that teach us the lessons, who spread their smiles, motivate us, help us, and lift our spirits. They are the ones to keep for they have made a lasting impression on our lives.

In order to have a true friendship with someone there must be all honesty and truth. If there isn't then this isn't a true friendship.

For people to be friends with another person, they must do things without the expectation that their friend will have to repay them.

Happy Valentines Day 2010

How true guidebaba...."unconditional love" there is a lesson to learn from the sun; no matter how we behave, she will still rise each day, expecting nothing in return. Thank you for commenting:)

guidebaba from India on April 05, 2009:

"unconditional love" is what I trust and believe in. There are people who expect something in return of the love that they give. This is not love. True love is in giving and not taking. Nice Job.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on February 06, 2009:

Hello Dottie, What a great and descriptive hub! I had no idea all of those things represented friendship and love. The huge jade plant that the former owner of this house had (too big to move) is in full bloom on our patio. Bet she hated to leave it! Will think of the meaning now when I see it every day. Thanks for discovering my hubs and becoming my fan. You now have a new one! If this is any representation of how you write, I know that I am in for a real treat!!!

Thank you countrywomen. I thought of trying Feng Shui myself but I heard elsewhere that it's not all what it's cracked up to be. So until I hear likewise I'll just wait it out...Thank you for coming by and for your comments ..Take Care

countrywomen from Washington, USA on January 26, 2009:

Those are some nice articles to convey our love. For a while I tried Feng Shui but I never saw any perceivable difference. I loved both the videos. Thumbs up for a cute informative hub.

Dottie1 (author) from MA, USA on January 26, 2009:

Hi Shirley Angel

I had to laugh when you said you loved the Troggs video. The longer I know you and the things you and I both love got me thinking perhaps we were born in the same year and if that is true then I am 2 months older than you because I was born in May and you in July, LOL. But I am really glad we are both in our 30's or is that 20's....

I'm tickled you found this hub handy for your Charlie and Angels shopping pleasures. So, ohhhhhh, welllllll, I guess I won't ask, lol BUT I can keep a secret ya know...

Happy Valentines Day to you too Shirley! Thanks for the visit. I love seeing you!

Dottie1 (author) from MA, USA on January 26, 2009:

Hi solacemoon,

I'm glad this hub brought back some good memories for you.  Without knowing your friend, it would be difficult for me to know whether he would like flowers or not.  It depends on his personality and also if he feels the same about the relationship and many other things.  Here is a link I found about frequently asked question about sending flowers to a man and hopefully can help make your decision a bit easier.  Good Luck and have some fun on Valentines Day. ~Dottie~

Shirley Anderson from Ontario, Canada on January 25, 2009:

I love this hub, Dottie Angel!

I loved the Troggs video, as well as all of the information. This hub is a handy guide that I will definitely use! I'm not telling what I'm choosing for Charlie or the Angels, just's supposed to be a surprise.

I have received gifts of stones in a bag and I love them and will keep them always. One was from my kids, another from a friend. They mean a lot to me because the givers are special to me. I haven't seen my friend for a long time since she moved to the coast, but I think of her every time I see the little bag.

Thanks for writing this, Dottie! Happy Valentine's Day with love.

solacemoon from Illinois on January 24, 2009:

Nice read I enjoyed all the wonderful information and it made me think of my special friend who means everything to me.Great ideas for gift giving,I wonder if it's ok to d=send flowers to a man? wWhat do you suggest he is a good friend but I love him =]I want to let him know how special his friendship is to me.

Dottie1 (author) from MA, USA on January 24, 2009:

Hey SweetiePie, I'm glad you enjoyed the hub. Here's wishing you a sweet and funfilled Valentines Day as my symbol of friendship to you. Take Care :)

Chris glad you came by to get some practical ideas. Have a good day!

Zsuzsy great idea. I think yellow roses are gorgeous and thanks for sharing a bouquet for all to share. Very sweet of you! ~Dottie~

Zsuzsy Bee from Ontario/Canada on January 24, 2009:

Dottie once again a great hub. I think I will add more rosebushes to the garden this year and I will make them the yellow variety in the mean time here is a large bouquet of vitual yellow roses for all the hubland friends to share.

Great hub regards Zsuzsy

Cris A from Manila, Philippines on January 24, 2009:

Glad I checked this out as I am running out of ideas on how to be practical without compromising originality and thoughfulness! That said, I'd go for the hi-five! LOL

Oh there's a greeting below! Aww happy valentine to you, too Dottie :D

SweetiePie from Southern California, USA on January 23, 2009:

The friendship bracelets were big back in the late eighties when I was in fifth and sixth grade. Today I like the teddy bear as a symbol of friendship best. Cute hub!

Michelle Simtoco from Cebu, Philippines on January 23, 2009:

Let's go shopping Sis! :D LOL That would be great fun picking gifts for each other.

Dottie1 (author) from MA, USA on January 23, 2009:

Thank you quicksand.  I like a lot what you say about the first symbol being the most powerful and shining on every other and so every day!

I had just read myself about the inaugural journey of our new President and how the train is a powerful symbol.  Where 100s of folks stood waving as Obama passed by on train from Philadelphia to Washington.  How that morning's train mirrored President Lincoln's journey by rail in 1861.  The only significant difference was that Lincoln's train did not stop in Maryland because it was a slave state.  But if we are to fulfill our new President Mr Obama's vision for this country we must put aside our differences and all get on board this train!

Thanks for the visit and...You have a great day too quicksand! :):):)

quicksand on January 23, 2009:

When I am seated at my desk in the early hours of the morning the first rays of the sun reminds me that I have to switch off my desktop light. The first symbol, the most powerful, shines on every other symbol. There are many.

So every day is New Year's Day, Christmas, Valantine's day ...

Have a great day Dottie! :) :) :)

Dottie1 (author) from MA, USA on January 22, 2009:

Hey, it's my G-Ma.. always with kind and cuddly words for all, it's no wonder you love the cuddly teddy bear. I have a cute cuddly teddy myself. I'll bring him by with me next time I stop by your place for some late night chocolate mug cake, lol. Hugs and Peace back to you, G-Ma. Thanks for your visit.

Thanks suzanne for coming by. It's always charming and fun to see you :) Happy Valentines Day!

Thanks Megan, it is a great video isn't it, made me feel the same way so here is one big hug for you, if that's o.k. with you Megan! Thanks for coming by and commenting.

Hi my Daisy friend...I was just wondering if the daisy is a symbol of friendship...silly me of course it is because you are a Daisy in the true sense of what love and friendship are all about.  And thank you Daisy for the red coral, I love that symbol of life force energy, just saying those words seem to empower me with the force, thanks.  Wow, you are a great shopper.  I just think all those gifts you picked for your friends were great choices.  Thanks for your order Daisy.  They will be going out first thing in the morning.  I will keep your gift a secret until you receive it because surprises are always fun.  I love you too Daisy, and wish you a fun Valentines day. (((Hugs)))

Hi Dottie, these are beautiful ideas as symbols of love and friendship. My mind is running amok since it is busy thinking as to what symbol to use this coming valentines. Hey Bruce, thanks.  I read that and it makes sense about the hug thing for mental health.  Thanks for coming by and a big virtual hug for you too!  Does a big hug count for two?

Dottie1 (author) from MA, USA on January 22, 2009:

VioletSun, a trip with long time friends to NY sounds awesome. I have a few such friends myself who stay in touch and get together at least once a year. There is nothing better than that. hmmmm...a trip to NY sounds fun:) Have a grand time!

Hi Julie-Ann, thanks for stopping by today!

Bruce Elkin from Victoria, BC Canada on January 22, 2009:

Good one. I loved the free hug idea/video. Virginia Satir's research found that we need 14 hug a day for optimal mental health. Here's a virtual hug for you, Dottie!

C. C. Riter on January 22, 2009:

Dang, I tried to draw a heart with x's and it wouldn't let me. Anyway, great job.

Julie-Ann Amos from Gloucestershire, UK on January 22, 2009:

Hi - some really sweet ideas in here thanks

VioletSun from Oregon/ Name: Marie on January 21, 2009:

Dottie: I liked the meaning of the stones; never thought of buying stones or crystals for Valentines and I used to sell crystals and gemstones. Good idea! Its true that friendships are valuable, and some stay for a short while, but three us have remained friends and kept in touch for over 30 years. They are anticipating my visit to NY this year so we can all get together, ladies only, no husbands or boyfriends. :)

Thumbs up!
