15 Signs That You've Gone Too Far with Your Christmas Lights Display

Jeannie has been writing online for over 10 years. She covers a wide variety of topics - hobbies, opinions, dating advice, and more!

How Much Is Too Much?

During the Christmas season, folks have many different traditions. Some people like to just put up a small tree and keep their decorating to a minimum. There are those that love to decorate the entire house full of amazing decorations, animatronic Santas, and more. Still, there are some folks that have a great enthusiasm for outdoor Christmas decorations. It is not enough to add a few subtle decorations to the front yard. No, they are taking outdoor Christmas decorating to a whole new level. This hub is all about that type of person.

People have many different strategies when decorating their yards for Christmas. There are such a wide variety of decorations to choose from: strings of lights, inflatible Christmas characters, plastic Santas, and even animatronic light-up reindeer. With so many decorations available, no wonder some people find themselves getting really carried away. It is not enough to put just Santa and Mrs. Claus in the front yard when they could also add about a dozen elves, all the reindeer, and even Frosty. Why bother just putting one basic string of lights around the roof when you can cover the entire roof, every tree, and every bush with lights?

So basically, this hub is dedicated to the Christmas decorating enthusiasts out there that take holiday decorating to a whole new level. If you are wondering if perhaps you are a person that takes your Christmas lights display too far during the holiday season, I am here to help you determine just that.

You Know You've Gone Too Far With Your Christmas Decorations When...

  1. Your neighbors just bought all new blackout curtains for every window facing your house.
  2. When people drive by your house at night, they put on their sunglasses.
  3. Astronauts in space just reported that your home is now shining brighter than Las Vegas.
  4. Your electric bill increased by $500 for the month of December.
  5. When you stop to count the light bulbs used for your Christmas lights display, you lose track after 2 million.
  6. The fire department periodically checks on your house "just in case" due to the calls they regularly receive from concerned neighbors.
  7. There are several traffic jams on your street each night as people either stop to take photos of your lawn ornaments or crash into a car while staring at your Christmas lights display.
  8. Pilots flying over your home have filed complaints against you. They are too distracted to properly fly the plane when going over your house.
  9. You've been forced to "borrow" some of your neighbor's lawn just to complete your "Christmas vision" for your holiday decorations.
  10. Folks passing by your house are asking if you charge admission to see the decorations. Now that you think about it, it's not really a bad idea.
  11. Dogs have started baying at your home. They think they are seeing a full moon.
  12. Children point and ask why Santa is 10 foot tall and on fire with lights.
  13. The temperature near your home is now 10 degrees warmer than anywhere else in the state because of all the lights.
  14. You've found some neighborhood children roasting marshmallows over a giant Christmas display featuring over 10,000 twinkling lights.
  15. You are hoping for no major rain or snow this winter, or the whole place might short circuit.

DzyMsLizzy - Wow! Your Christmas decorations sound amazing. You never know.... one day I might just show up at your place. Your decorations sound great! Thanks for visiting my page and for the votes!

torrilynn - Every now and then, I think it is a little more than needed. Most of the time, it is all in good fun though. Thanks for your comment and happy holidays to you, too.

torrilynn on December 19, 2013:

I always thought the more the merrier but I can see how some people might go over board. Best of Wishes and Happy Holidays.

Liz Elias from Oakley, CA on December 18, 2013:

Hahahaha!! We are very nearly that couple!

It started back when my current husband and I first got together, and I wanted to put up some outdoor lights, as I had always wanted to, but neither my father nor my ex-husband would have any part of that. I guess for my dad, it was because he had a bum hip, and ladders were difficult for him. In the case of my ex, he was a just plain old Scrooge humbug.

And so it began. First year, we got two static light-up reindeer. Next, we added a lighted sleigh; then came two more deer; then the icicle lights and porch-pole-wrapped lights. At the time, we lived on the bottom floor (below grade) of a condominium, and hubby (who had, before we met, ALWAYS decorated over-the-top), built a stand to hold the deer up, so they could be seen from parking lot level. That year, we won the holiday decorating contest the complex held.

After we moved here, to a regular house, oh, boy! Each year, we added more, deer, trees, icicles, santa, bush netting lights...etc... We stopped at 6 deer, though, for space considerations, including off-season storage space. I don't think we can quite be seen from space, but for sure, we have to plug things into about 5 different circuits. And that's just outdoors. We have a full-on village under the tree....and hubby collects Santas....Come on over--we don't charge admission! Hee hee hee..

However, we now have some physical issues, and this year we needed my grandson to do most of the work. He's approaching his senior year in high school, and after that, will be gone to the military, so this may be our last hurrah....

Thanks for the votes! I am glad you enjoyed it. I saw a show once about extreme holiday decorating and the neighbors explained how their very festive neighbor borrowed their yards each year because all of his decorations did not fit into one yard.

Movie Master from United Kingdom on December 12, 2011:

Number 9 is my favourite! fabulously funny, loved it!

Voted up and funny.

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on December 11, 2011:

Yes, I have seen friends and neighbors in the past struggle with doing the decorating outdoors. I think just plopping down a Santa that lights up in the front yard should be plenty enough rather than dealing with all the lights. I guess it makes some people happy.

Isn't it easier when you live alone? I just put up a small fake tree, decorate it, and go on with my life. No fanciness necessary when you live by yourself.

Thanks for the comment!

Greensleeves Hubs from Essex, UK on December 11, 2011:

Love the list of 15 signs. I always had the job of putting up the decorations at my parent's house. The first five minutes were fine. The next 3 hours were spent cursing as tinsel and baubles kept falling down, and lights failed and I could never find the bulb which had blown.

Now I live alone. I might put a Christmas card on the mantle piece if I get one. Bah Humbug!

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on December 11, 2011:

Cogerson - Wow! It sounds like you are taking it to a whole new level at your place. You should post a photo!

robie2 - Yes, pass some of that egg nog over to me, too!

Seeker7 - Hahaha... blowing out the circuit for the whole street does not sound so great. No matter how nice the decorations are, you are not going to win anyone over with that. I am sure it is funny now though. Things are always funny in the past tense. :-)

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

Helen Murphy Howell from Fife, Scotland on December 11, 2011:

LMAO!! Some people really are OTT at Christmas - I think some of them are reliving their childhood! I do wonder what their electricity bill is like after Christmas though???? Maybe they spend the rest of the year paying it off?

I don't think everyone who puts up all these super fibre-optic decos are popular. A couple of years ago, a woman and her husband three doors down from my sister put all this crap up outside their house - and this was only the 28th November I hasten to add - when switched on, the display lit up the whole village, my sister said it was like something from 'Close Encounters'! This awesome sight lasted about 3 minutes, then, flash, spark it blew the whole circuit for that part of the street!!

Great hub, very funny + voted up!

Roberta Kyle from Central New Jersey on December 11, 2011:

Oh what the heck-- deck the halls and pass the egg nog. Thank God it only happens once a year :-)) fabulous hub, voted up and funny funny funny!

UltimateMovieRankings from Virginia on December 11, 2011:

A very funny list of homes that have Griswalded their house....My family is guilty of this as we have a Dora, a Snoopy, a Woodstock, a Grinch, a Homer, a dog, four polar bears, and a 10 foot Snowman in the front yard....and in the spotlights and we draw some attention to the house at night...I enjoyed reading this very funny hub.

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on December 11, 2011:

Oh, I would love to go on a tacky lights bus tour. I used to live close to VA. Maybe one day I will get to take that tour. Thanks for reading and thanks for the comment!

angela p from Richmond, Virginia on December 10, 2011:

We have a lot of these around here. So much that every year there is a tacky lights bus tour in Richmond VA. Too funny. Love your hubs..

Thanks everyone for reading my hub and posting comments!

Sunshine625 - I am glad this hub could decorate your day. I live in an apartment building, so I don't have to worry too much about this now either.

Apryl Schwarz - Hahaha... some people really take it to a whole new level. I haven't seen a house like that in a while.

laurathegentleman - I am glad you liked it so much. I used to wish we had more decorations when I was a kid, but maybe not this much. I think I was born old - always concerned about the electric bill!

laurathegentleman from Chapel Hill, NC on December 10, 2011:

This is wonderful! (And as a child, I DREAMED of decorating our house like this for Christmas!) Absolutely hilarious and, to a point, true! :)

Apryl Schwarz from Nebraska on December 10, 2011:

Very funny! When I was growing up, there was a house that went CRAZY at Halloween and Christmas. Tons of lights, giant santas, reindeer, nativity scenes. Just craziness. Voted up!

Linda Bilyeu from Orlando, FL on December 10, 2011:

This hub decorated my day with laughter!!! LOL

Luckily we don't have neighbors who over-do it!!
