Red, Black & Silver Sweet 16 Birthday Party

One of the many things I love to do is party and event planning. I have done a whole lot of it in my days!

First Things First

Once she picked her colors we had to get the invites out. I purchased the ones viewed below. In addition to that I put a Facebook invite out using the invite photo.

The invitations below are customizable, so you can change all of the information for your party. Below the photo is a link to the invitations.

Venue

We reserved our community clubhouse for a reasonable $75.00. Not too bad! Our clubhouse is not a huge space and it was filled with furniture. I asked if we could remove the furniture and store it at our house for the duration of the party, unfortunately I was told that I can not do that. So I had to figure out what to do.

There was a sofa, love seat, a chair, 2 end tables, a coffee table and 2 large dining tables with chairs. I put the large sofa in the foyer area and the chair in the hall area. I kept the love seat, the end tables, the dining tables and chairs.

The love seat colors didn't go with the theme, so I went out and purchased a set of t-shirt material sheets. The material stretches so it worked out perfectly. Then I bought some sequin covered pillows. Behind the love seat I put a table for gifts.

I also had to remove all of the artwork from the walls and store it in a closet.

I kept the plants as well. I put a sting of white Christmas lights in them.

Reconfiguring the Tables

I put a tall table in the middle for the princess and used the dining tables on each side of that. Then I used the glass coffee table in front of the center and covered it in rose petals with a bouquet of roses.

The photo below is my room, where I had all of the decorations stored before we set up.

I used one of my bar stools from home for her chair, because it was taller than the rest. I purchased 2 satin pillow cases at the dollar store and put pillows in them and rapped the bottom with a red table cloth. Below is a closer look at the setup.

Seating

Luckily I had previously purchased 8 small tables and a bunch of stools for another venture and we already had 2 large folding tables. If you do not have tables and chairs another option is to rent them locally.

I layered the tablecloths. I used red on the bottom and trimmed the black ones square for the top layer. For the stools I cut red tablecloths into narrower pieces, gathered them around the stool and tied a bow. It is easiest to cut the tablecloths before you completely unfold them.

Window Coverings

For all of the window coverings, I used dollar store table cloths. Black for the long windows and silver and black for behind the head table. I applied them with mounting tape also found in the dollar store. The thick foam squares stick the best.

For the dance floor I purchased red holographic duct tape and sectioned off a rectangular area in the center of the room.

I made the napkin rings on my printer. I printed a sheet of them, cut them out and used a glue stick to secure them.

Happy birthday crowns, bubbles and cups were all from the dollar store. I added red rhinestones and curling ribbon to all of the cups and bubbles.

Food

Nacho Buffet, Shirly Temples & Virgin Strawberry Daiquiris

For food, Nicole wanted a nacho buffet. It was a big hit. In fact one of her friends had one at her party, following Nicole's.

We had a kitchen in our clubhouse so we could keep the cold items cold and refill when needed. The hot items went in crock pots. The silver and red crock pots were pure luck, my mother-in-law just happened to have crock pots to match the party colors.

For drinks she wanted Shirly Temples, Virgin Strawberry Daiquiris & Virgin Pina Coladas. Those drinks worked out well with the color theme. We also purchased soda and water. I set up a bar in front of the kitchen, so it wasn't that much of an eyesore.

All of the containers and serving tools were purchased at the dollar store. The dollar store has realistic looking plastic champagne glasses and silver colored plastic utensils.

I printed a sign for the table that read: "Please use utensils NACHO fingers."

Candy & Sweets Buffet

For the sweets buffet, I tried to find red, black and white candy or silver wrapped candies that people would actually eat. I got red and black licorice, red hots, Hershey's Kisses etc. All of those items I put in clear cocktail glasses from home.

The items that did not match the color scheme, I put in black and red containers, some containers were from hone and some I purchased. I made cards to stick out of the containers of those items.

The small red paper bags for the candy were also from the dollar store. Using regular printer paper, I printed Nicole's Sweet 16, cut them out and used a glue stick to attach them to the bags. It was a little bit cheaper than purchasing printable stickers.

I also added a string of red Christmas lights to the table.

Photo Memory Board with Glitter & Rose Petals

This was made with a foam board, rose petals and lots of hot glue. I put this in the entryway on a decorated easel next to the guest book table.

I think i got the glitter lettering at the dollar store but I cant remember. I did get the glitter tape at the dollar store. I cut it out into diamonds and stuck the pictures to the board. I also added some rhinestones here and there.

The photos I had printed at Walgreens. They are ready in like 5 minutes and it was less expensive than printing them myself.

Using my photo editing program I created a red background and I converted the photos to black and white then put 2 photos per 4X6" print and then cut them out.

You can flip them in either direction or mix them up because they will be cut out anyway.

Just make sure you cut even lines for a nice border.

I put the collage in the foyer on one of my easels and decorated it with tissue pouf balls from the dollar store. You can make these yourself too but why bother when you can get a strand of them for $1.00. I made the skirt with a tablecloth.

Guest Book Table

I had an old accent table that was on the taller side so it worked great for the guest book.

I trimmed a plastic table cloth square, just big enough to cover the table and hang over about a foot. I then taped it to the legs of the table.

I cut the remaining piece of tablecloth into about 2ft sections (cutting it the short way),

Starting at the top (under the overhang of the tabletop and over the previously taped piece) I wrapped one of the 2ft sections of trimmed tablecloth, tightly around the legs and taped it to itself.

I then gathered it by pulling it upward, to create a ruffling effect. I repeated this with the remaining pieces until the entire bottom of the table was covered.

Lastly, I cut a narrow piece of a red tablecloth and wrapped it over the black to add some contrast.

The pen I just taped a flower to the top of and the bottle was purchased in the dollar store.

Rose Petal Rug

Nicole wanted a rose petal rug so I made one to match her photo collage. I put it in the center of the foyer next to the memory board and the guest book table. For some reason I don't have a better photo of it but you can see it in the photo above.

Photo Booth Backdrop & Props

For the photo booth I made a backdrop from various materials from the dollar store. Table cloths, glittery tulle, ribbon etc.. I put it together with a couple of empty wrapping paper rolls.

I purchased masquerade masks, boas and various headbands. I also used some old ornate picture frames that I had in my studio. The masks, boas and headbands I purchased in the dollar store. The dollar store now carries photo booth prop kits.

I made a prop box put the items in there, hung a mirror on the wall so the kids could see what they look like. I also hung a chalkboard and wrote something on it, I cant remember now LOL.

I also purchased the 1 & 6 balloons at the dollar store. I swear they have everything.

Lighting

Half way through the party the sun had moved and it was getting darker in the clubhouse. We had replaced a couple of the existing lights with rotating disco lights but the switch worked all of the ceiling lights, including the ones we had replaced. I should have thought of it but I was too busy making Shirly Temples and refilling the nacho buffet bowls. Anyway, my husband had to unscrew the existing lights and just leave the party lights in. Was quite the debacle in the middle of the party.

After the Party

After it was all over, we had to clean everything up that night. Take pictures and send them to the HOA to get our deposit back. Luckily I had family to help.
