Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Weekend
When Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, the first child and eldest daughter born to Albert, Duke of York and his wife Elizabeth arrived on the 21st April 1926 no one had an inkling that this baby would one day be a queen nor that she would be the longest reigning British monarch by several and hopefully many more years.
Elizabeth II turned 96 this spring and she is a highly respected figure on the world stage. To celebrate her 70 years reign a double bank holiday and a range of events, ceremonial and informal, have been planned between 2nd-5th June 2022.
There is a wealth of love out there for this royal nonagenarian; even people who don't like the institution of the monarchy hold affection for Elizabeth II, that's a testament to how positive her presence has been and will be (fingers crossed) in the years ahead.
Feel free to join the party wherever you are. This is the only platinum jubilee that we'll live through.
70 Years: 6th February 1952-2022
The 6th February 2022 marked seventy years since Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the British and Commonwealth thrones.
On the 4th and 5th February 2022 the queen hosted a reception, viewed cards and gifts sent to her by the public and she cut a beautifully crafted cake. On the 5th we awoke to a statement issued by her signed “your servant” and in it she expressed her wish that Prince Charles’ wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall is titled Queen Consort when he becomes king.
Between the 12th-15th May 2022 horses, a great love of the queen's, and humans (she probably likes them too!) descended on Windsor Great Park by Windsor Castle. The queen attended a special performance on the 15th featuring celebrities, the military and Princess Louise that charted history from Tudor queen Elizabeth I’s reign (1533-1603) to the present day. She looked quite emotional as tributes were paid to Prince Philip and clearly enjoyed the equestrian entertainments flown in from around the world.
The Big Platinum Jubilee Weekend
The 2nd of June marks the anniversary of the queen's coronation in 1953.
Trooping the Colour 2022 will take place on the morning of Thursday 2nd June rather than on the usual Saturday. The queen will attend, her mobility issues permitting. The breathtaking annual military parade with gun salutes and a Royal Air Force fly-past over Buckingham Palace should be even more special in this jubilee year. We know that the "working" royals will appear on the balcony. Harry, Meghan and Prince Andrew apparently won't.
Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall have filmed an appearance in B.B.C. soap Eastenders which airs on the 2nd June.
1500 Platinum Jubilee Beacons will be lit for the queen. The principal beacon will be at Buckingham Palace where there will be a special ceremony and other beacons are to be positioned around Britain, in the capital cities of the Commonwealth nations and in U.K. territories.
Thanksgiving Service - Party at the Palace
There will be a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on the 3rd June. The following day the classic horse race The Derby will be run at Epsom Racecourse and the queen was due to attend this but plans have changed.
With Harry and Meghan bringing Archie and Lilibet (Lily) with them - the queen hasn't yet met Lily in person and her 1st birthday falls on the 4th - the queen will now spend Saturday afternoon at a birthday party instead.
On the evening of the 4th June the Platinum Party at the Palace (Buckingham Palace) takes place.
The stage and spectator areas have been installed around the Victoria Memorial as I update this article on 1st June 2022. Just as in previous jubilee years this will be a live concert featuring a long list of stars of stage, screen and music. Sir Elton John, Diversity, Alicia Keys, Ed Sheeran, Queen and Adam Lambert, Andre Bocelli, Sir David Attenborough, Emma Raducanu and several casts of West End musicals will perform for the royal family and the crowds.
The Big Jubilee Lunch and Pageant
Sunday is the day of The Big Jubilee Lunch which is an excuse to party with family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues, anyone and everyone. Street parties are a must if you cast your mind back to the silver, golden and diamond jubilees. Royals will attend events around England, in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Thousands of people have registered their Big Jubilee Lunch events online. Many councils have put restrictions on informal events and whilst this is sensible in some cases it has been seen as party-pooper behaviour.
The Platinum Jubilee Pageant follows the jubilee lunch and key workers, military personnel and performers relate the story of Elizabeth II's record breaking reign in the pageant. The River of Hope feature is intended as a highlight. Children bearing 200 silk flags will process along The Mall outside Buckingham Palace. These flags are illustrated with their hopes for the future and the planet.
It Doesn't End of Sunday: Jubilee Exhibitions
- Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Holyrood Palace in Scotland will host exhibits of photographs, coronation robes and jubilee outfits from 1977, 2002 and 2012.
- Sandringham and Balmoral, the queen's private homes will have community events to celebrate the platinum jubilee.
- The Royal Collection Trust is holding three special exhibitions in 2022 to honour the queen’s 70 year milestone. These focus on her accession, her coronation and her jubilees.
Wherever you are, remember to raise a toast to Queen Elizabeth II. She's earned it.
