Pine Cone Crafts and Decoration Ideas for the Holidays

In order to kick start the holiday season, I did some scented pine cones recently and I am loving the sweet and spicy holiday smell that is lingering in the air in my apartment right now. This started me thinking about more wonderful things that can be done with pine cones so as usual, I consulted the net and was greatly inspired by all of the beautiful pine cone decorations and crafts I found. I decided it is the perfect time to do a pine cone decorations and crafts round-up! I hope you enjoy and maybe these projects will inspire you to make one or a few of your own pine cone decorations for the holidays. All of these projects are easy and the best thing about pine cones is they are free! Check your back yard, local parks or even a neighbor and if all else fails, you can purchase them although when I looked around I thought the prices seemed a bit steep. Chances are, if you look around a bit, you will probably be able to find some for free near you. If not, you could put a want ad on Craigslist to see if anyone has any pine cones from trees in their yard that you could come and gather up for free or for a small charge.

Now for the round-up.. I hope you enjoy :)

stunning pine cone topiaries

stunning pine cone topiaries

I have only one word for these topiaries I found at Somewhat Simple and that is stunning! I love how they are perfectly round and the pine cones have such a pretty texture to them. The containers are gorgeous as well but if you want to make one for yourself, you can choose whatever container you like. I think they would look great just sitting in a plain terracotta pot! Luckily, she shares the tutorial as well so go have a look. It is actually a very easy project.

beautiful pine cone embellished chandelier

beautiful pine cone embellished chandelier

I have always been a fan of embellished chandeliers and this one I found over at Creative Jewish Mom is no exception. I think it's gorgeous! I love how the pearls are strung in the center and how the pine cones are hung from around the middle and the cedar pods hang from each section. Also, the mixture of nature and country with the pearls reminds me of the shabby chic look.... very, very pretty!

Though I love this one just how it is, it did spark a few alternate ideas:

  • You could easily sub smaller pine cones for the cedar pods if you don't have access to cedar pods.
  • For an even more elegant look you could hang the pine cones with pretty satin ribbon or even a metallic or glittery ribbon.
  • I think hanging crystals would be stunning. You could hang them with clear fishing line or even hang a few from the pearls.
  • If gold isn't your color you could paint the pine cones silver. I think the combo of the gold and pearls is stunning on this one.

cute potted pine cones

cute potted pine cones

Look at these little potted pine cone trees I found at The Swenglish Home. I have seen little potted trees before but never potted pine cones. I think they are fabulous and look to be very easy to create as well. Simply mount the pine cones in a small pot with some spanish moss or something like that and then embellish the pot however you like with things that have that natural look. She lists on the post what she used for the pots. Some other things you can use is things like jute, burlap, raffia and even buttons would look cute- the possibilities are endless! The blog where I found these is stunning! I encourage you to look around the post, she shares LOTS of wonderful ideas for decorating your home. The photos are beautiful.

pretty hanging pine cones

Room Service~Decorating 101 has these simple yet elegant hanging pine cones for a window dressing. A project really can't get any easier that this! It is simply attaching ribbon to the pine cones and then adding a bow. Then hang them from a stick or branch or something over the window. I think these would be beautiful strung across a mantel or the top of a shelf as well. So pretty! This is another great blog with lots of pretty décor photos to help inspire you.

gorgeous pine cone garland

gorgeous pine cone garland

I was looking for a pretty pine cone garland and ran across this one at Cass House that was made using this tutorial from Twig and Thistle. I think it looks so very pretty hanging across the mantel and love how the pine cones are evenly spaced like that. I love the simple look of it but if you wanted to dress it up a bit more, you could try tying some strips of material or ribbon between each pine cone.

large clay pots with pine cones, greenery and ornaments- gorgeous!

large clay pots with pine cones, greenery and ornaments- gorgeous!

What a wonderful idea for holiday decorating! When I saw these, I immediately thought, WOW! For something to be so easy to do, it sure has that wow factor that so many of us love. It looks like she has simply sat some pine cones and pretty shiny ball ornaments in with a pine-type plant. Absolutely stunning!! Talk about super easy.. the only thing is that the pots can be a little high but don't forget about the 40% and 50% off coupons at places like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Wal-Mart is usually pretty reasonable on prices too. Another option is to buy the plastic pots that look like terra cotta. They are usually cheaper and can be very pretty too.

I found this at Plough Your Own Furrow along with many more gorgeous winter photos.

pretty pine cone votive holder

pretty pine cone votive holder

zakka life has the tutorial for this pretty pine cone votive candle holder. It is another easy project that consists of gluing pine cone scales around a piece of cardboard circle. Although the pine cones around here have scales that are more narrow, I am pretty sure they would work for this as well using a little creativity. I love the natural look of it.. I think it makes a perfect holiday decoration. For a pretty table scape or centerpiece, I can see several sprinkled along the center of a dining room table maybe grouped with a scattering of pine cones or other winter elements.

fabulous glittered pine cone wreath

fabulous glittered pine cone wreath

Out of all the pine cone wreaths I saw online, this one over at Crafty Sisters is my absolute favorite. She was inspired to do this one because of a wreath she saw at Ballard Designs. I love the placement of the pine cones, it almost looks fluffy to me. The silvery, glittery tips of the pine cones give it such a pretty texture with them all grouped together. If you are interesting in doing a similar wreath with your own pine cones, go have a look. She shares how she did it along with lots of gorgeous photos.

cute pine cone wall hanging

I also found this pretty pine cone wall hanging at Crazy for Crafts along with an easy explanation about how to create this as well as great photos. I love the polka dot ribbon that was used but if polka dot isn't your thing, the selection of ribbon out there is mind boggling and I'm sure you will find something that you will like. They even have quite a great selection of holiday ribbon at the Dollar Tree each year.

simple yet elegant pine cone place card holders

simple yet elegant pine cone place card holders

I fell in love with these pine cone place card holders over at Project Wedding. Although they are perfect for winter weddings, they would also be amazing for a formal holiday party, as well. Be sure to go have a look at how easy these are to make. It's a great post with lots of photos. You could do several of these in no time. If you wanted to "bling" them up a bit, you could add some glitter or metallic paint or even just paint the tips white but the natural look is very nice too.

pretty pine cone flowers

pretty pine cone flowers

I'm a huge fan of faux flowers so I couldn't leave out these pretty pine cone flowers that I found over at Blog A La Cart complete with a wonderful tutorial. I love the vintage looking button embellishments in the middle. If you wanted them more holiday colored, you could use other holiday colored buttons like reds, greens, etc. You could also add a pretty holiday colored ribbon around the container or maybe mix some holiday elements like stems of poinsettia or glittered sticks and things like that in with the flowers.
