Sharing One Car Soon Comes to an End

My sister and I have been sharing one car for two years after our Jeep went to car heaven. Going from a two car family to one, was a big change. It takes thoughtful planning and good organizational skills to make sure everyone gets to their destination. Due to a tight family budget, Laura and I didn't for see a second car in our near future which is what makes this story so much sweeter.

How we got a Great Deal on a Convertible

My sister and I went to our local American Legion for a meat raffle and bumped into our good friends. We met Fran and Betty over eight years ago while attending a chili cook-off in town. No longer having parents, they fill that maternal/paternal void and we became fast friends. We have a deep connection with the couple who are now in their eighties.

Laura and Betty were engrossed in conversation at the meat raffle when I heard, "What did you just say Betty? back up the train." She explained that her daughter Julie was selling her beloved convertible. Laura couldn't believe her ears as it's always been our dream to own one. Now, Fran and I joined in on the conversation and were filled in on the details. Soon, Fran was on his cell phone calling his daughter. "Julie, Linda and Laura have been sharing a car for over two years and are interested in buying your convertible." Then I heard, "Make sure you give them a great deal, you know their like daughters to your mom and I."

The stars aligned that day and we are now owners of a second car. Not just any car; a beautiful, silver, 1998, Chrysler convertible. It's in mint condition because they stored it every winter which saved on miles and rust. Wait! this story gets even better~We bought the car for a song- We only paid $1800.00 for it thanks to the friendship with Fran and Betty. This is a dream come true for Laura and I. It was meant to be that we would happen upon this incredible deal just two months shy of our 50th birthday. "Happy Birthday to us."

Love it Ed~It's a date~let's wait till it gets warmer. How does May sound? The three of us will be quite the sight, singing and waving our arms. Hugs back to you my friend.

By the way ladies ! Blow the horn twice when you fly by , I'll meet you at the corner ! I'll sit in the back and ride !..........Hugs

Joanna Chandler from On Planet Earth on January 16, 2014:

Thank you Minne, well i am delight to know you are enjoying your ride :) I can hear it in your voice.

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on January 16, 2014:

Thanks MG Singh. Already had a little accident in the convertible. The dog jumped out of it but is just fine. We wont let her be unleashed in the back anymore. Live and Learn. LOL

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on January 16, 2014:

Thanks Lady Fiddler-This convertible is a dream come true for sis and I. I can't wait till it warms up again in Minnesota so I can put the top down. I can't tell you how much fun I have driving around in this car. I appreciate your visit and it's always great to see you my friend.

MG Singh from UAE on January 16, 2014:

Thank you Jackie-I like it a lot in the summer but not so much in this frigid Minnesota winter. I am grateful for the great deal and timing on this.

Jackie Lynnley from the beautiful south on January 16, 2014:

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on April 10, 2013:

Hi ahorseback~no, there is nothing more fun. You and my sis and I sure know how to live...I just wish Minnesota would start looking and feeling like spring. Were still getting cold weather and snow. Tonight and through tomorrow were supposed to get 5-8 inches of snow. UUGGHH~ I just want to drive in my convertible and feel the wind in my hair. LOL

ahorseback on April 10, 2013:

Is There anything as great as a convertible ! I've had a Jeep CJ , a couple of motorcycles , Now I have a tractor with no top ! Yeeeeeaaaa ! Hugs to the two sisters !

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on February 22, 2013:

It is great to laugh and I loved how you worded the engine blow. Glad you learned how to take care of your cars since then. LOL

Isn't there something so amazing and freeing about riding in a convertible? I can't wait till spring gets here. Woo Hoo!

Kathryn from Windsor, Connecticut on February 21, 2013:

I don't mind that you laughed! It was unexpected, and it's good to laugh! Anyway, I learned from mistakes, and have learned how to take care of a car.

I had the use of a Mazda Miata a few years ago, and it was a convertible. I got to use it with the top down, and it was great! And I didn't blow the engine! My boyfriend taught me how to drive standard with the Miata, too.

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on February 21, 2013:

I feel kinda bad that I laughed when I read you blew the engine before getting to try it out with the top down. Sorry, but it caught me a bit off guard. BTW-it's kinda cool that sis and I really had no crisis other than turning '50'. Life is so great at this time in my life :-)

Kathryn from Windsor, Connecticut on February 21, 2013:

That was a sweet story. It looks like a very well taken care of car, too, as you said. $1800 is a steal! I bought a 1988 Chrysler LeBaron convertible (turbo) back in 2007 for $1500, and it was older, had pretty high mileage, and had a slight tear in the top. I loved it, but unfortunately, I didn't put oil in it enough, and its engine blew up before it was quite warm enough out to test it with the top down!

I have a few years until I'm middle-aged. I'll figure out what my "crises" will be when the time comes!

That sounds so fun, I'm glad you two share it.

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on February 15, 2013:

Ha Ha-I will risk it Chris, because as you said, I was born to be wild...

carolina muscle from Charlotte, North Carolina on February 14, 2013:

well, you know of course, that convertibles can lead to the harder stuff .... like motorcycles. :-D

......... Born to be wild....

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 30, 2012:

Thanks so much Pollyannalana-What perfect timing that a deal like this would come up just before the big '50.'

Pollyannalana from US on November 30, 2012:

What a great piece of luck, congratulations and Happy Birthday to the two of you!

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 22, 2012:

Hee Hee-it is a lot of fun to be a twin-Its a built in best friend :-)

Chinemere onuekwusi on November 22, 2012:

congrats is always a pleasure reading your write ups, just wish i was a twin and not just any other twin but an identical one.

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 16, 2012:

So wonderful to see you Colin~Can you believe our new ride?? We are having such a great time hanging out in the new convertible and cranking the tunes as we cruise around. I think you should write some hubs about your mum visiting you. I feel like hubs of this kind are healing and hopeful for those that are grieving the loss of a loved one. I too have had visits from mom and dad and my brother who was one year older than sis and I. Always great to see you my dear Canadian Prince who I admire and love. Our friendship means so much to me my friend :-)

epigramman on November 15, 2012:

....well what a lovely story for my two favorite twin sisters - and you are both so deserving of your continued health, happiness and prosperity in the coming new year as well and that is quite a sexy looking car (lol) for two such sexy young ladies whom I am proud to call my esteemed colleagues and true hub friends.

Happy birthday to both of you and this is a real feel good story.

Sending you warm wishes and good energy from lake erie time ontario canada 3:39pm where all three of us are doing fine and hanging in there - Colin, Little Miss Tiffy and Mister Gabriel

and yes I am having ghostly visits courtesy of my mum who passed away back in 2004 in our family cottage here and she is moving things around - I've had 6 such visits in the last 2 years

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 15, 2012:

Thank you Justsilvie-I had to laugh when I heard your husband always has the top down on nice days with the radio blasting. It's a must do when you own a convertible. I am glad to hear your enjoying it too~doesn't it make you feel so alive when you're in it? It's gonna be in the 50's today in Minnesota, so we already have it planned to take the new car with the top down. WOO HOO!

Justsilvie on November 15, 2012:

A very Happy Birthday! Enjoy the ride. My husband bought one last year for his 65th Birthday and every nice day the top is down and the radio blasting on his way to and from work.

I have to admit it I also enjoy the ride and no longer care about the wild hair or the looks of amusement from the youngsters as we nosily drive by.

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 15, 2012:

Kashmir-your the first one to comment on my music video- THANK YOU~I thought it was the perfect song to convey how this new ride makes me and sis feel. Vroom Vroom! Great to see you Kashmir.

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 15, 2012:

Thanks Deborah-what a perfect 50th surprise huh? I still can't believe it. Pinch me Deborah, pinch me...but tell me it's not a dream :-)

Sounds good akirchner-Perhaps you could share the biscuits with my dogs and we should be safe and sound. See you next spring.

Audrey Kirchner from Washington on November 14, 2012:

If you show up, I'm on it~ And mine would be tied in--no mishaps~ Wow is that crazy about your dog jumping out---I'd just have a couple dog biscuits up front and they wouldn't be going anywhere~ Congrats and enjoy the ride!

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 14, 2012:

Hi Ruby-Wow, a Pontiac Firebird-SWEET RIDE~ The first time I got in the Sebring and felt the sun on my face and and wind in my hair, I fell in love. I still can't believe we own a convertible. I'm having so much fun!

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 14, 2012:

Hi akirchner-No Problem! your dogs would look great in a convertible-Just make sure you get them trained to stay inside the car and not jump out when they see dogs. My littlest dog just jumped out of the car the other day when he saw two dogs getting walked. I can't believe she only has some scrapes and road burn on her mouth. Lets plan on having this sweet ride when spring rolls around :-)

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 14, 2012:

LOL Gus-So kind of you to take it off our hands. It is true that having the top down is only possible for 5-6 months in Minnesota and skeeters are huge and in mass quantity. How about you have it during the winter and we take it back in the spring?

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on November 14, 2012:

What a fun read. I am thrilled for you both. I owned a convertible in the late 70's and felt like i was the queen of the road. It was a pontiac firebird. Loved the pictures, now go out and celebrate!

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 14, 2012:

Hi drbj-I do think it's karma or the, "you get back what you give" thing. I haven't had this much fun in a long time. I can't tell you how much fun it is to drive with the top down. It's the little things in life that make me happy. I am not one to be into material things but I have to say, this is so great!

Audrey Kirchner from Washington on November 14, 2012:

Hey Linda--my malamutes would look AWESOME in the backseat of your new ride....they even have their own sunglasses!!! Could you swing by and pick us up?

Congrats and enjoy the ride---LITERALLY!

Gustave Kilthau from USA on November 13, 2012:

"Double-L..." Now you know that it is just way too cold most of the time (+ skeeters everywhere) in the place where you guys live. So, let me help you. Ship that crate down here to me where it will feel at home, and you will be relieved of those problems.

Gus :-)))

drbj and sherry from south Florida on November 13, 2012:

May you both enjoy your beautiful convertible for many, many years to come. Happy 50th birthday, Linda and Laura (minus 2 months). Is this Karma or what?

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 13, 2012:

I know Billy-I still can't believe it-it was one of those situations where we were at the right place at the right time. Thanks so much for coming by and checking out our new ride. Love you friend :-)

Linda Rogers (author) from Minnesota on November 13, 2012:

Thanks so much femme-we shall keep it safe even though we were born to be wild. LOL

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on November 13, 2012:

$1800??? I'm taking you with me next time I need to buy a car.

Hey, congratulations! It couldn't happen to two nicer people and I am so happy for you. What a sweet set of wheels!

femmeflashpoint on November 13, 2012:
