Movie Themed Birthday Party Ideas for Kids

Candy, popcorn, and fun!

Tween and Teen Party Ideas

Sometimes it is difficult to think about what kind of birthday party your tween may want to have. As children get older it is more difficult to find a theme for a party that is not too grown and sophisticated but also is not for little kids. Tweens are sometimes a tough group to please! And if that party is co-ed, forget it! How can you possibly think of something that is going to appeal to both boys and girls? This is where having a movie themed party fits in. It is perfect for boys and girls and will accommodate a variety of age groups.

Creating a Unique Invitation

Finding the perfect invitation can sometimes be difficult. It can be a lot of fun to actually create your own invitation that will be unique to your own birthday girl or boy. Using Microsoft Publisher is a great way to get really creative. If you don't have that program, simply using a word document and adding some clip art with text will make your guests excited about their upcoming event. To the right is an example of a cute idea for a movie party.

Movie Party Menu

I'm not sure about you but I don't really remember seeing too many salads offered at the movies! A movie party menu is not going to be very healthy if you stick with the theme. Here are some ideas for what you can serve to your guests.

  • Hot Dogs
  • Mini Corn Dogs
  • Nacho chips with gooey cheese
  • Mini hamburgers (sliders)
  • French fries

If you want to add some healthy options to the menu, there's nothing wrong with adding a fruit salad or a vegetable tray for the kids to munch on! I'm sure that many kids will enjoy these healthy choices and I'm sure that the parents would appreciate them too!

Birthday Cake for a Movie Party

There are some great options for creating a cake for your movie themed birthday party. You can keep it simple by just making cupcakes and adding a decorative cupcake liner with a cute pick to each individual cupcake.

However if you want to get a little more elaborate, you can try your hand at creating a more personalized cake. You could make a cake that looks like a movie ticket and announces birthday wishes for the guest of honor. Or you could make a cake that is a little more complicated and resembles a box of popcorn. Whatever your choice may be, you will be sure to thrill your birthday boy or girl.

Movie Party Activities

There are some really obvious activities that you can do at a movie themed party, like watch movies! Although this is a great idea and the guests will have lots of fun watch a movie or two and eating some popcorn, there are some other activities that you can do. How about play a movie trivia game?

You could make it a contest that is sort of Jeopardy style where two to four guests complete against each other or you can have teams compete. Let the contestants earn 'tickets' for each correct answer. Then have the kids use their tickets for candy, popcorn and drinks from a little concession stand that you set up. Allow them to make 'purchases' with their tickets right before they watch a movie. Depending on the interests and ages of the guests, you can create your own trivia questions or use a game that is available for purchase.

If you serve the popcorn in plastic popcorn containers, your guests can take them home as part of their party favors. Any leftover candy boxes can be added to the popcorn boxes for the guests to have. If you are feeling very generous, you could add a gift card for $5 for a local movie rental place or movie theater.

If you want to make your party a little more glamorous, you can have a red carpet rolled out as your guests arrive. Take each person's picture as they walk in the door. When you have your son or daughter send out thank you notes, you can include the picture of that guest. As part of the gift bags at the end of the party, you can include a frame for each child to put the picture in.

Any activities that you decide will be great fun for your guests. Making a party personalized and special will create great memories for the birthday boy or girl and his or her friends.

Going to the movies with some friends is a great way to spend a birthday too. Maybe you should give her a birthday do-over and roll out that red carpet! :) Thanks for stopping by Robin.

Robin Edmondson from San Francisco on May 10, 2012:

Fantastic movie party guide! Our middle daughter took some friends to the movies and pizza for her last birthday, but I think she would have preferred your party-especially if there was a red carpet! I love that idea!

It would be fun just to do for the heck of it! I'm actually working on a cake to go with this hub but the cupcakes would be great too! Especially since you are the cupcake queen. :)

Oh how fun! I could just see those cute red and white cupcake wrappers with little yellow and white marshmallows on top to look like popcorn. I might just do this for fun one weekend night for my boys. Great party ideas - voted up and pinning!

Yes a movie party for adults would be a blast too. You could have an Oscar party and really make it fancy! Great idea for the fruit. They would love that.

That's a great idea teaches 12345! You could ask each guest to dress up as their favorite movie character. Thanks for your addition! :)

Movie theme party for kids? Heck, I'd like to have a movie themed party for adults! This looks like fun. As for the fruit salad, I would serve it in a 'box' like they do for nachos at the movies, and put a little skewer or toothpick to lift it up from.

Delightful hub, Cara. Bright, cheery photos and eager smiles on those munchkins.

Great party idea for those kids who are just a little bit older. I like the idea of winning tickets to "buy" stuff. And you're right, no healthy food at the movies!

What a great party idea! Even though my older son is only six, we were thinking of doing a movie birthday party next year (for his seventh birthday). His birthday is in December and the weather makes outdoor parties difficult - I'm definitely saving these ideas!
