May is the fifth month of the year and is named after the Greek goddess Maia who looked after plants. It has 31 days like six other months, including January, March, July, August, October, and December.

May is known for several things. It is said that this is the month when plants really start to grow. This is probably why people say, "April showers bring May flowers."

Events Recognized in May

The month of May seems to be important for all members of the family with days to celebrate. It is the end of the school year with the Junior and Senior Proms happening during the month.

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated when the entire family can take part in the festivities. It is always celebrated on May 5 because that's what the name means in Spanish.

Sometimes teachers are not appreciated and rewarded for the hard work they do. They will be honored on May 7 for their contribution to the field of education on National Teacher Day.

Mother's Day comes in May. It is not always on the same date, but it is always on the second Sunday in May. That's the day when mothers all over the world are honored. Restaurants will be full that day when families give their mothers a day off from cooking.

National Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. It is a federal holiday observed annually to pay tribute to the men and women who currently serve in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is the only federal holiday that is celebrated in May. It is the day to remember the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. Memorial Day is observed every year on the last Monday in May.

May Flower is the Lily of the Valley

The Lily of the Valley is a beautiful delicate looking flower that people love. It has a sweet aroma.

From the photo, you can see six white tepals at the base are in the shape of a bell. The plant has a small orange-red berry that is about 5-7 in diameter that contains a few large whitish to brownish colored seeds.

Louise, I read that Mother's Day is celebrated there in March. I see that Father's Day is in June as it is here in the US. May is one of my favorite months because of the pleasant weather.

May is a nice month of the year. Though here in England we celebrate Mother's Day in March. Father's Day is in June. I find May quite pleasant weather wise though, it's not too hot and winter is out of the way.
