Learn To Talk Like A Pirate
Here's a fun way to learn some pirate words...it's a pirate's vocabulary cheat sheet and I found it at Tamrootbeer.com. It's got about 80 words and phrases on it, so it will come in very handy in helping you get the lingo down to match your costume. Do you know what a blighter is? How about a blaggard? Shiver me timbers, Pieces of Eight, Dog Watch, or Davy Jones Locker...any of those phrases mean anything to you? No, probably not, but they will when you read over the cheat sheet.
The Jack Sparrow Costume Tutorial
That's a great picture of Jack Sparrow at the top of this page, isn't it? Have you looked it over and taken it apart to see what you will need to duplicate it? It's pretty simple if you have the clothing you need. If you don't you can look in a thrift store or consignment shop for some inexpensive items to help you make it. You will need:
- Brown Pants
- Loose Sleeved White Shirt (a poet shirt)
- A Couple Belts With Big Buckles
- Slouch Boots (The kind you can pull down would be perfect)
- A Scarf
- A Bandana
- A Wig - if you like
- Beads For Your Hair
Make the pants and vest look dirty and old. Put on the pants and the shirt. Let the shirt hang out. put the vest on and close it with a belt or two. Add a scarf and let it hang down in the front. Braid some beads into your wig or tie them to your bandana. If you decided to get a wig, put it on and wrap the bandana around your head. Play with your outfit until it hangs just the way you want it to.
If you have slouch boots (that's what I call the boots with the thigh high tops that fold down) wear them to complete the outfit. If you don't have boots, you might be able to throw on a pair of leg warmers or cut some socks and put them up by the top of your boot to add some thickness to the leg look. You can also find some boot covers in a costume store or online to wear and give your outfit the appearance of those slouchy pirate boots.
You can also get a pirate's tricorn hat - it is a hat that shaped like a triangle. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find out how to make one using a woman's hat with a brim. That's one of the things you might find in the consignment or thrift shop, or on sale in Walmart or Target.
I love the large sleeve look of a white shirt but you can also use a striped t-shirt for your costume. Take a look at how the buckles and belts are everywhere - they can only enhance your costume and you can never have too many.
