The candy season is upon us once again. I love a good treat every now and then, but there are only so many fun-sized candy bars I can handle. My twins will be embarking on their first trick-or-treating this year, and though they won’t be old enough (at just a year and half) to enjoy the spoils of their efforts or the countless days of treating leading up to the big night, I know the sugar-high is not far off.
Between Halloween candy appearing in stores by August, classroom celebrations, and parties with families and friends, the Halloween season certainly offers no shortage of sugar. Below are a few healthy Halloween treats. They are all very tasty and kid friendly alternatives to the usual fare. These healthy Halloween snacks are all very festive, making them perfect for a school function or personal party.
Buy a bag of mandarin oranges (or a box of Cuties) and with sharpie marker draw jack-o-lantern faces on the peel. You can also use black stickers to achieve the same effect. If you’re looking for a fun activity, children who are old enough can draw their own jack-o-lantern face.
Oranges are not only healthy, but they provide a refreshing break from all the candy. Even better, kids love eating them.
Ghost Frozen Bananas
Peel your desired number of bananas and insert a wooden popsicle or craft stick into the bottom. Dip each banana in orange juice and roll in shredded coconut; shake off the excess. Add chocolate chips for eyes and then freeze until ready to serve.
Frozen bananas have a more sugary flavor than regular bananas, and so these “ghosts” are sure to satisfy a sweet tooth without the guilt of cake or candy.
Peanut Butter Apples
Wash your desired number of apples and be sure to peel of any labels from the skins. Insert a wooden popsicle or craft stick into the bottom of the apple and spread peanut around the outside using a knife or small spatula. Set the coated apples on parchment paper, stick up, and dust each with a small amount of orange and black sprinkles.
These Halloween inspired peanut butter apples are a healthy alternative to the traditional caramel apple. They are just as tasty, but with a fraction of the sugar.
