Halloween is a $6 billion industry here in the United States and rightfully so. Halloween is simply fun and frivolity. Long gone are the dungeons and dragons and the witchcraft. Yes, the scary stuff is still here, you can still find loads of monsters and grotesque faces. What has changed? The industry has branded Halloween into simply just pure fun. It is all about the make believe, the many different costumes, and oh, my goodness, all the candy! Halloween is a bigger holiday for candy than even Valentine's Day. To further indulge this lucrative industry is the home decoration. The economy must be rebounding and people feeling better because home decoration for this season is strong. Items were flying off the shelf of the big box store in my area.
What has changed this holiday most dramatically? In my humble opinion, the color scheme. The introduction of vibrant purple and almost luminescent orange has turned this holiday into a decorator's dream. It started with purple outside lighting, now the big boxes are offering a complete array of lighted pumpkins and ghosts to grace your home's pathway and entrance.
While it is becoming a commercial holiday, there is still room for the handcrafted pieces for decoration. Journey with us as we explore handcrafted witches, scarecrows, and even pumpkins made out of dryer vents. Stay with us to the end and envision a final idea of colorful garden stakes that celebrate the purple, yellow and orange decorative colors of Halloween.
More Than Just Jack O'Lanterns
Halloween decorations are now much more than just Jack 'OLanterns. Yes, Jack is still center stage but he is now greeted in conjunction with copper counterparts, handcrafted scarecrows, witches, spiders and more.
One of my favorite finds this year were the beaded placements that were in a Halloween motif that I quickly snatched for creating small decorative vignettes throughout my family room. Or do we still use the term great room?
Outside I have a glimmering white lighted ghost along with orange and what I would term "vivacious violet" outdoor lights.
Inside I have a collection of Boyd bears decked out in Halloween colors of black and orange. Witches from around the world are on my table top. While the witches are not handcrafted, you can garner some ideas that these would not be difficult to recreate and even improve upon.
I hope you enjoy the visit to my Halloween decorations. Sit down, grad a cup of tea and get ready for some great handcrafted ideas along with some bright, bright colors. Hold on to your witches hat, here we go....
Hand Painted Halloween Wooden Dolls
Happy Handcrafted Witches and More
Handcrafted Fall Pumpkin from Dyer Vent Tubing
Handcrafted Pumpkins from Dryer Hose
Handcrafted Halloween Pumpkins
These are among my vary favorite decorations. They were perhaps the least expensive, of course, they are the lightest - they are simply orange painted dryer vents decorated with all the fall trimming of raffia and faux silk fall leave. I have included a couple of close up photos so you can see the stem and the use of the glue. These were not created by me, I picked them up years ago at a church fund raiser. Whomever created these lighted dryer vent pieces of art is in my mind simply brilliant.
I prefer to think of my witches as happy witches. Witches with character and little twinkle of mischief in their eyes. Witches who are happy and intend no harm or ill will to anyone.
What would a witch be without the broom and the black cat - oh, my goodness out of character! Alas, I have no photos of their broom - you must trust me they all have their transportation close at hand. The black cat is simple enough to find but the cat revels in the fun and frolic of the orange feather boa and the plastic sparkles.

Hand Stiched Detail on the Scarecrow
My Favorite - The Scarecrow in Black Felt and Handstitching
Just as in the Wizard of Oz, the scarecrow in my collection takes center stage for me. Sorry Jack - I had to be truthful. This scarecrow I purchased but you can see the beautiful stitching detail on the black felt that makes this decoration come alive. Also note the detail at the cuffs and especially the top of the head holds extensive decoration.

Teresa Moran's Magic Happens All the Time - Only Some Believe
Hand Painted Slate Happy Halloween Decorations
My husband is staunchly frugal. He agrees and supports perennials but annuals he remains very quite. For Halloween, I enjoy items that are evergreen - items that will not perish and that I can retrieve from year to year like refreshing old friendships - tried and true. This year, I added to my Halloween collection a hand made piece of slate with an inspirational saying that reads "Magic Happens Every Day - Only Some Believe".
This piece was custom created just for me by Teresa Moran. I provide the saying that I wanted and the colors and the backdrop idea and Teresa's imagination and creativity took it from there.
The magic of the holiday season brings out the child in all of us, the magic does happen every day but we must do our part and believe.
Some kind of magic, happens late at night. When the moon, smiles down at me, it bathes me in its light. I fell asleep beside you, in the tall blades of grass. When I woke, the world was new, I never had to ask. It's a brand new day, the sun is shining, its a brand new day. For the first time, in such a long, long time, I know, I'll be okay.
It is true that every day has its own evil, and its good too. But how difficult must life be, especially farther on when the evil of each day increases as far as worldly things go, if it is not strengthened and comforted by faith. And in Christ all worldly things may become better, and, as it were, sanctified. Theo, woe is me if I do not preach the Gospel; if I did not aim at that and possess faith and hope in Christ, it would be bad for me indeed, but no I have some courage.

I found that a long time ago and was thrilled but my check book was in agony. I have seen them on eBay at great prices too. I love Halloween and the copper items are my favorites but they do demand a little bit of TLC.

Where did you buy the copper jack o'lantern? I want one just like it! :)

I love happy Halloween items - bright, cheery oranges and perky purples - oh, I am in a cornball mood - sorry! No blood, no frightening witches. Life is too beautiful for that - celebrate the season with glam and glitter. The hand crafted pumpkins were my favorite. Who would have thought about the clothes dryer tubing! Now, I must depart, my copper pumpkins in the basement are begging to be released for the season.
