The Origin Of Grandparents Day

Marian McQuade of West Virginia first proposed the National Grandparents Day by starting a campaign in 1970 to dedicate a day to honour grandparents. She is recognised as the founder of the National Grandparents Day in the U.S.

With the support of the Church, civic groups, businesses and political leaders it led to the signing of a federal proclamation by the then U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, in 1978 and the first National Grandparents Day was celebrated on September 9, 1979.

Before this, the first Grandparents Day was observed in 1973 in West Virginia.

Grandparents Day Gift Ideas

If you are one of the lucky ones to have grandparents living let this opportunity be a time to let them know how special they are in your life and how much you care for them. Giving them gifts that they will love and use will further strengthen the bond of love that binds you to them.

Here are some gift ideas for Grandparents day.

  • Make it happen - Drop in and spend some quality time with your grandparents today. They will cherish this for a long time. With life being as busy as it is, this special occasion is a blessing in disguise and this gesture would probably be the greatest gift they would love to have.

Talking to them, hearing them out will make their faces beam with a smile you won't easily forget either.

  • Gift a picture of yourself - What a better gift for your grandparents on this day to find a beautifully framed picture of the grandkids for them to receive and cherish on this occasion.

  • Apart from the above, you can give them handmade gifts made specially by you for this occasion. It will also show that you really cared to take out time to put together the handmade gift.

Just go ahead and do it and see the glow on their faces.

  • Next in line could be some gifts that can be used daily. Something that both grandma and grandpa use in their day to day activities. This will not only be a thoughtful gesture but will make them smile and remember you fondly each time they are used.

FlourishAnyway, we need to appreciate our grandparents for what they did for us and be with them for as much time as we can so that we have happy lasting memories of them when they are no longer with us.

Thanks for reading.

Lovely hub, Rajan. I never knew how Grandparents Day started. I always assumed it was "invented" by the greeting card companies. I am lucky to have one set of grandparents still alive. I bought them some cinnamon bread and honey butter from their favorite bread store and made some cookies to celebrate the day. I will miss them when they are gone.

Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful, and shared on FB Rajan. I didn't ever know it was coming up, glad I found your article pal. I only have one grandparent left and grandma was recently diagnosed with cancer, so I want her to know I appreciate everything that she has done for me. I appreciate the reminder. I live in West Virginia and I didn't know Marian McQuade was responsible for Grandparents Day, very cool. Great ideas and information Rajan.

Kathryn from Windsor, Connecticut on August 31, 2013:

Rajan,

I was just thinking about Grandparents Day yesterday, when I noticed it on my calendar. Thanks for reminding me again, because I want to get a card ready for my one pair that is still alive. I may even see if there's a way to visit them. I have one week to see if it's possible! I know they would love to see me.

I also didn't know there's a song about it. It's adorable.

Have a great weekend, and thanks for sharing this with us!

Every day grandparents day for me. My grandsons live right next door and their gift to me is the joy they bring to my life.

I never knew but one of my grandparents and she died when I was four. My other grandparents had already passed away. I wish so much that I could hug them and squeeze them on this special day but what I do instead is plant a new special plant in their honor or sit in the memorial garden in my yard soaking in the beauty around me.

Thanks for sharing this...I hope that families do embrace their grandparents not just on this special day but each day.

Great suggestions ....Angels are on the way ps
