About Georgia O'Keeffe The Artist
Georgia O'Keeffe was an artist and you have probably seen the beautiful pictures of large flowers she painted...even if you did not realize it was her who painted them. New York skyscrapers and Arizona desert scenes are also seen among her many paintings. Georgia was born in Wisconsin and her parents were dairy farmers. She became an art teacher and continued to study art. She has been called the "Mother of American Modernism". There are several schools of modernism and one is named after Georgia's husband, Alfred Stieglitz. Georgia moved to New York and then to Arizona.
On this page you will find some of Georgia's paintings to help inspire you when you are planning and making your Georgia O'Keeffe costume. Add elements of her art work by adding colors and flowers to complete your DIY costume.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Costume
The picture at the top of this page shows a colorful version of Georgia O'Keeffe. To make this costume at home you will need:
- A purple kaftan (perhaps you can use a sheet)
- A gray wig - unless you want to color your hair
- A large red paper poppy
- A skull or some other Southwestern prop
I found this costume at The House That Lars Built and on that page you can find instructions to help you make your own red poppy flower. You will also find a video down at the bottom of the page to learn how to make a paper flower.

The Gray Hair
To achieve this grey hair look you will need some white hair chalk. Coat your hair with the chalk. Roll your hair sideways into a bun and bobby pin it to keep it up. Free up some of the ends of your hair to give it a loose look around your face. Add the final finishing touches with your chalk to get just the color you want.
This costume idea from The Art of Education is a plain rendition of the artist and she is carrying her famous painting, Red Poppy. The clothes for this outfit should be easy to find in your closet and drawers. To make this costume you will need:
- A white men's style shirt
- Bobby pins
- Long Skirt or Loose pants
- A black blazer or a black wrap style sweater
- A painting of a giant flower or some other Georgia O'Keefe painting
- Optional: Southwest jewelry
