Free and Inexpensive Mother's Day Gifts
Mom works hard all year, so it’s only fitting than on her special day, she gets a little pampering! There are lots of ways to show your appreciation to your mother or to your wife this Mother’s Day. Most of these are either inexpensive or free, so even if you don’t have any money, these make inexpensive Mother’s Day gifts, or even free Mother’s Day gifts. Here are just a few suggestions:
Massage – One of the best gifts I ever received was from my youngest daughter. Last Mother’s Day, she hired a masseuse to come to my house to give me a massage. It was so relaxing, and I didn’t even have to go anywhere to get it! If you can’t afford to hire a masseuse, do the job yourself.
Coupon book – This was a winner – a unique Mother’s Day gift - from my husband. He bought this at a gift shop, but you could easily make your own for free. Inside the little booklet were coupons for things like “one 30-minute walk,” “one car wash,” “one hedge trimming,” “one trip to see your mother, with no complaining,” and other stuff like that. You could even make the coupons more amorous, if you know what I mean!
A day off – This is another free gift that Mom will appreciate immensely. Give her Mother’s Day off. Get the rest of the family to pitch in and do the household chores for the day, including cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
A picnic – Make up a picnic basket and surprise her by taking out into the country or to a park for a relaxing picnic for a unique Mother’s Day gift. If this is to be a couple’s outing, throw in some music, a bottle of wine, and a blanket to make it a romantic gift.
Spa treatment – Take or send Mom to a spa for Mother’s Day, and get her the works! After a manicure, a pedicure, a facial, and some other spa treatments, she’ll feel like a million bucks!
Beauty treatment – If Mom has been talking about getting a new hair style, send her to a nice salon to have her hair cut and styled. She might even want a complete makeover! You can usually have these done for free at department stores that sell makeup if you purchase some of their products. I know our local Belk’s does this with Estee Lauder.
Fashion consultant – If Mom has been talking about changing her wardrobe, hire a fashion consultant to give her some advice. Don’t do this unless she’s mentioned wanting to do it!
Homemade card – It’s easy to run to the store and buy an expensive card for your mom or your wife on Mother’s Day, but what would impress her more is a card that you make yourself. List all the things you love about her inside the card.
A gourmet meal at home – If you can get Mom out of the house long enough, surprise her with a homemade meal upon her return home. If you can’t cook, have a friend or relative do it. Have the table set with the best china and silver, fresh flowers, and candles. Play some soft music in the background, too.
A garden – Many men buy flowers for their wife and mother on Mother’s Day, but these don’t last long. Instead, why don’t you make her a small flower garden outside? You could plant it with seeds, bulbs, or live plants, depending on how much you want to spend. This is a gift that will last for years if you include some perennials in the mix.
Photo album – Gather some photos of the family and place them in a photo album for Mom to enjoy. Be sure to include photographs of family vacations, holidays, and other memorable events.
A tree – If Mom has been wanting a tree planted in the yard, Mother’s Day would be a great time to surprise her with one. Buy a large specimen and plant it while she’s away from home. Tie a bow around it so she’ll be sure to see it when she returns.
Shopping – Buy some gift certificates from stores that are all located in the same shopping mall. Then take her shopping without any complaints from you! Carry the bags and wait patiently while she tries on clothes, and be sure to tell her everything looks great on her! She’ll love spending time with you, and this will certainly earn you some brownie points.
Her car – Many women neglect the care and service of their car. For Mother’s Day, you could take her auto to be detailed, or you could do it yourself for free. Fill up the tank while you’re at it!
Mother's Day chocolates - What woman doesn't love chocolate? Mother's Day chocolates can be purchased in fancy containers and boxes, or you could make your own. The candies don't even have to be expensive. Buy her a selection of her favorite chocolate candies and place them in an attractive gift basket or gift bag.
Friend reunion – Surprise Mom on Mother’s Day by inviting a long lost friend over to spend the day with her. Volunteer to keep the kids while the two pals do some catching up.

The "A Friend Reunion" is a fantastic idea. I did this for my mother at Christmas. I invited two of my mother's friends from kindergarten to lunch. These women are aging and in poor health, so getting them together was better than anything I could have bought. Great Hub with some wonderful ideas. Thanks.
