Father's Day in Germany

Thelma Alberts is a natural born Filipina who lives in her adopted country Germany for more than 3 decades. She loves traveling in Europe.

Vatertag / Father´s Day

Tomorrow, the 14th of May is Father´s Day here in Germany. I forgot about it until I saw the telly, telling me what holiday we will be having. Yes, Father´s Day is a public holiday in Germany. No work, no school and no shops open. Well, the restaurants are and some amusement centers.

After listening to the telly, I thought, why not write Father´s Day hub. I have already written about Mother´s Day, so why not write about how we celebrate this holiday in Germany. Fathers are also important in our lives. I know it´s not of the same date we celebrate this all over the world and I know most of the other countries don´t have this day as an official public holiday like we have.

Facts About Vatertag / Father´s Day

  1. Germans Father´s Day is celebrated on Ascension Day which is called Christi Himmelfahrt in German language. The day when Jesus ascended to heaven to meet God, the Heavenly Father, after His crucifixion.
  2. It started in the Middle Ages when the catholic religious people honoured God, the Almighty Father by having a procession in town on the Ascension day, which is the 40th day after Easter.
  3. It is celebrated on Thursday, a few days after the Mother´s Day which is the second Sunday of the month of May.
  4. It is an official public holiday in Germany where almost everything is closed like the shops, offices and schools.
  5. Nowadays, Father´s Day is not only celebrated for the fathers but also for all men, single, father or not.
  6. Starting from the 17th century, the catholic Ascension Day celebration becomes a family bonding day to honour the bonds of fathers to his children.
  7. Nowadays, Vatertag or Father´s Day is strongly commercialized and it became a day to get drunk. A booze day for some men. A lot of beers are consumed on this day of the year.
  8. A day when the drivers are strictly controlled and a day when plenty of accidents occur in the streets.

Things The Germans Do On Father´s Day

  • It is a family bonding day of some of the Germans. Those who have small children enjoy the day by celebrating it in a park where children can play. Some are having great time by having a grill or barbecue party in their garden.
  • Fathers with adult children might have a get away party or a bicycle / bus tour with their adult children. Some of them are having a hiking or walking tour in a park or in the woods and pulling the Bollerwagen ( a wooden handcart) with them, with loads of alcoholic beverages and some food in it. (Check the you tube video below.)
  • Single men celebrate Vatertag with their male friends in the park and their fully packed Bollerwagen or they enjoy it in the pub. It´s time for them to get drunk.
  • Vatertag is a holiday to get boozed which is very frightening to think of when men think they can still drive a car.

Which one of the above you have choosen to vote? For me, family bonding at home or having a picnic in the park with my family is the best of all. I am glad that my hubby does not like celebrating Vatertag / Father´s Day with a booze as it would be horrible for me as I don´t like the smell of a drunk man. Father´s Day is just a normal day for us.

Gift Ideas for Father´s Day

Buying a gift for a man is very difficult compared to buying a gift for a woman unless you know him very well. Of course, family bonding is one of the best gifts a son or daughter can give to a father. Here are some gift ideas.

  • A bottle of his favourite wine.
  • His favourite after shave or perfume.
  • Chocolate
  • A CD or video of a movie he would love to see.
  • Pajama or T-shirt
  • Something for his hobby like a painting colour when his hobby is painting.
  • Seeds when he is a hobby gardener.
  • A book he would love to read.

Goodbye!

Thank you very much for reading. Do you have your Father´s Day this month in your country? Do you celebrate it the way we do here in Germany or do you have another tradition? I will update this hub every now and then when I find something I can add. Please don´t forget to comment. Have a lovely day!

HAPPY FATHER´S DAY!!!

Hi Peggy. Thanks for the heads up. My father has gone too a few months ago. Keeping our good memories with our fathers is always good and worthwhile.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on July 02, 2017:

Father's Day is not a public holiday in America but like Mother's Day is always on a Sunday when many people except those working in restaurants, retail establishments, hospitals and the like have some time off. My dad has been gone many years but it was always fun remembering him with some special gift of his liking.

Thelma Alberts (author) from Germany on June 23, 2016:

Yes, indeed Vellur. Spending time with our fathers are the best gift we could give . Thanks for your dropping by. Have a great day.

Hi Thelma, What a lovely hub this is, even though I'm reading it a year late. You did give some good ideas of what to put on the grill and what to buy. My father is passed but I do celebrate Father's Day for my husband, he was and still is a great father to our children. Thanks for sharing.

Blessings to you.

Thelma Alberts (author) from Germany on January 14, 2016:

Great hub with yummy recipes!

Besides loving your recipe ideas I love the idea of celebrating Father's day. Both father and mother are equally important for the sound development and upbringing of the child.

Thank you for sharing this interesting and informative hub!

moonlake from America on June 14, 2015:

This will be my kids first Father's Day without their Dad. He always loved having them all over for a cookout or we would go to one of their homes. We all miss him.

Interesting hub, voted up.

Sheila Brown from Southern Oklahoma on June 13, 2015:

Hubby's oldest son always does a BBQ cook-out for him. All the kids and grand kids come and we heat and may have a beer or two, but no one gets drunk. Father's Day is an important day! This was very interesting, I love learning about other cultures and how they celebrate holidays. Up and interesting!

You are very welcome torrilynn. Researching about Vatertag was very informative for me as I did not know that it was already being practised in the Middle Ages. Best of wishes to you, too.

Thelma Alberts (author) from Germany on May 17, 2015:

Yes, it has a religious origin. I did not know about that until I made a research about Vatertag. My hubby did not even know that until I told him. I thought it´s like the Father´s Day in the US.

Es freut mich auch Sie kennenzulernen. Ja, ich schreibe auch auf deutsch aber nicht online. Nur Einkaufliste oder Tagebuch.

Thank you wordswithlove. Schönes Wochenende!

torrilynn on May 16, 2015:

A very well written hub that you have here. I never knew that Father's Day is a public holiday in Germany and that its started as far back as the Middle Ages. thanks for the new information. Best of wishes.

Neetu M from USA on May 16, 2015:

Very informative, Thelma. I guess, unlike the American Father's Day, Vatertag has religious origins.

Those cupcakes look wonderful.

Hi Thelma,

Our Father's Day is mid June and always a Sunday. When my dad was alive as a family we used to have family meal in or out at a restaurant / hotel. Gifts were similar to those you mentioned, tops, ties and music often the winners!

Hope you had a lovely day and your husband was spoiled rotten!

Jackie Lynnley from the beautiful south on May 14, 2015:

Father's Day is yet to come in America but I very much enjoyed reading about yours! Thanks for sharing it with us. ^+

I like the fact that all men are honored on Fathers Day. They all play the father's role at sometime. Thanks for sharing your customs and I hope you enjoyed Fathers Day in your family.

Thelma Alberts (author) from Germany on May 14, 2015:

Yes, it is indeed very interesting. I thought at first this Vatertag is only for the fathers but it´s not. The bbq was yummy and every time I see those photos above makes me hungry. LOL! Thanks for the comment drbj.

How interesting, Thelma, to learn that Germany has a Father's Day holiday and that the Vatertag holiday applies to single men as well.

Your barbecue, BTW, looks very appetizing.
