The Salt Dough Recipe
You are going to find lots of salt dough recipes, many will also have different cooking times. Find the one that works for you. I've put lots of ornament ideas on this page so it might be difficult to pick just one out, but you don't have to stop at one...you can make as many of these ornaments as you like.
Make ornaments in all shapes and sizes...check out the Santa, the footprint penguin, the handprint, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more. I also found some salt dough video tutorials and there is one that tells you how to make a salt dough paw print for your dog!
Make The Salt Dough Using This Recipe
The dough recipe is so simple to make. All it needs is all-purpose flour, some salt, and some water. Check your cabinets, do you have a container of salt and flour? You will need:
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1/2 cup of water
Now mix it together...continue to mix the dough and knead it for about ten minutes.
You can make as little, or as much dough as you like. The basic recipe is 2 parts flour + 1 part salt + 1 part water.
Step 2 - Get Rolling
The next step involves a flat surface sprinkled with flour, a rolling pin, and your dough mix.
Flour a surface and roll the dough out on it. You want the dough to be about 1/4" thick. Get some cookie cutters, press them into the dough, make a hole at the top of the ornament shape with a straw or a pencil ... something that makes a hole in your shape. That is so you can put some string or yarn through so you can hang it...but don't string them yet.
Step 3 - Time To Bake The Dough
Okay, it's time to bake your salt dough ornaments - heat them a low temperature for a long time.
So you've got to put the ornaments on a baking sheet, and put the sheet in the oven set. Set the oven at 250-300 degrees for about an hour. You want the dough to be completely dry.
The thinner your dough, the less time the drying will take. You can also let the ornaments dry overnight out on a counter. Just make sure the dough is completely dry before you begin to decorate them.
Step 4 - The Fun Part Begins - Decorate Your Ornaments
Let your ornaments cool down. Now it's time to decorate them!
Paint them or glitter them, add embellishments if you like. Be creative and have fun, this is the best part of the project. It's where you see all your efforts paying off with some beautiful homemade ornaments.
You can spray them with a clear polyurethane, thread the string or yarn through the hole to make a hanger...tie it in a knot and your homemade dough ornaments are ready to decorate your tree.

Decorations For Your Salt Dough Ornaments
I've added lots of pictures to this page so you can see many different style of ornaments. Get some fun ideas, make unique shapes, use unusual decorations when designing your decorations.
Here's a fun idea ... make some hair for your ornaments using a garlic press. Before you put the ornament in the oven, slightly wet the part you want the hair and press the hair onto it gently. The water will act like glue. You can draw or paint faces on round ornaments, add the hair, and you'll have personalized ornaments you can use as gifts.
Glitter Handprint Ornaments
Life is a Lullaby will show you how to make these beautiful glitter handprint ornaments - you will need glitter and glue, and of course, a hand to make the handprint. That's where those kids come in super handy!
These cute handprints would be a great gift for a parent or a grandparent. They will probably become a irreplaceable treasure we parents keep years after our children grow up. The gifts my kids made me are my favorite keepsakes along with my photographs.
