Bing Crosby's Christmas

What color was Bing Crosby's Christmas?

  • Blue
  • Yellow
  • White
  • Black
  • Purple

While Elvis may have had a Blue Christmas and perhaps Prince has a purple one, Bing Crosby's famous Xmas song is about a White Christmas. I think most of us hope for the same. Everything covered in a blanket of white powder, just enough chill to make a fire and hot chocolate sound good. Perfect white Christmases seem to happen so rarely, but as long as we don't have a yellow Christmas I think we'll be okay.

White Christmas Lyrics

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

Just like the ones I used to know

Where the treetops glisten

and children listen

To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

With every Christmas card I write

May your days be merry and bright

And may all your Christmases be white.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

Just like the ones I used to know

Where the treetops glisten

and children listen

To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

May your days be merry and bright

And may all your Christmases be white

And may all your Christmases

May all your Christmases

May all your Christmases

White Christmas First Performance

Bing Crosby was the first to publicly perform White Christmas and he did it just weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It's thought that the nostalgic feel of the song made people feel better and added to its success.

That's a Lot of Reindeer

What reindeer was listed after Vixen in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer?

  • Dasher
  • Dancer
  • Prancer
  • Rudolph
  • Comet

Santa has a lot of reindeer pulling his sleigh. I wonder if he ever gets their names mixed up like moms do. "Come on Pran--I mean, Dash--oops! Donder! Whatever your name is!"

Creation of Rudolph

Almost named Rollo or Reginald, Rudolph was created by Robert L. May in 1939 for Montgomery Ward. The song didn't come out until 10 years later and was first played by Joe "Opie" Gunther the house pianist in Chicago's Drake Hotel. Gunther was a refugee from Nazi Germany.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Lyrics

You know Dasher and Dancer,

and Prancer and Vixen,

Comet and Cupid,

and Donder and Blitzen,

but do you recall

the most famous reindeer of all

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer

had a very shiny nose

and if you ever saw it,

you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer

used to laugh and call him names.

They never let poor Rudolph

play in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas eve

Santa came to say,

Rudolph with your nose so bright,

won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then all the reindeer loved him

as they shouted out in glee,

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,

you'll go down in history

Twelve Days of Christmas Origins

Twelve Days of Christmas originated as a sort of chant or game. The first written record of it is from 1780, but it is believed to be older. The tune we sing it to now comes from a 1909 arrangement of a traditional folk song.

Twelve Days of Christmas Lyrics

On the first day of Christmas,

my true love sent to me

A partridge in a pear tree.

On the second day of Christmas,

my true love sent to me

Two turtle doves

and a partridge in a pear tree.

On the third day of Christmas,

my true love sent to me

Three French hens, two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the fourth day of Christmas,

my true love sent to me

Four calling birds, three French hens,

two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me

Five golden rings.

Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves

On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me

Six geese a-laying,

Five golden rings.

Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me

Seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying,

Five golden rings.

Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the eighth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me

Eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying,

Five golden rings.

And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me

geese a-laying,

Five golden rings.

Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me

Ten lords a-leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans

a-swimming, six geese a-laying,

Five golden rings.

Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me

a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying,

Five golden rings.

Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

Popping Corn Over the Fire

In the song, Let It Snow, what did someone bring?

  • Mistletoe for kissing
  • Lips for kissing
  • A present to get a smile
  • Corn for popping
  • A hot body

While the song does allude to bringing some things less innocent, in Let It Snow, the singer brought some corn for popping. Doesn't that sound lovely? Popping some corn over a fire while the snow falls outside?

It's Cold Outside

Let It Be Cooler

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! was written in Hollywood, California during a heat wave. The creators were trying to imagine some cooler weather.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Lyrics

Oh, the weather outside is frightful,

But the fire is so delightful,

And since we've no place to go,

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

It doesn't show signs of stopping,

And I brought some corn for popping;

The lights are turned way down low,

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

When we finally say good night,

How I'll hate going out in the storm;

But if you really hold me tight,

All the way home I'll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,

And, my dear, we're still good-bye-ing,

But as long as you love me so.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Beards Tickle

In the song, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, where does momma tickle Santa?

  • Outside in the snowy-white
  • Inside his suit so ruby-red
  • Underneath his beard so snowy-white
  • On his jolly-red cheeks
  • In a place better not mentioned

Naughty mommy kissed Santa underneath his snowy-white beard. Luckily for that potentially scarred child.

Kissing Santa Claus

An Advertising Gimmick

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus had a creation similar to that of Rudolph's. It was created for store -- Saks Fifth Avenue. They had a store Christmas card with artwork that they wanted a song to match.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus Lyrics

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus

Underneath the mistletoe last night.

She didn't see me creep

Down the stairs to have a peep;

She thought that I was tucked up in my bedroom fast asleep.

Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus

Underneath his beard so snowy white;

Oh, what a laugh it would have been

If Daddy had only seen

Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night.

A Cute Button Nose

In Frosty the Snowman, what is Frosty's nose made of?

  • A carrot
  • A Piece of Coal
  • A Corncob
  • A Button
  • A Stick

Frosty was made with a button nose. Does that mean he had four nostrils? I guess that's better than a carrot nose. Those would have to be hard to breath through.

That's Frosty!

Frosty the Snowman

Frosty the Snowman

A Frosty Setting

Frosty the Snowman is supposed to take place either in White Plains, New York or in Armonk, New York. Every year Armonk has a parade in honor of Frosty.

Frosty the Snowman Lyrics

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul

With a corncob pipe and a button nose

and two eyes made out of coal

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say

He was made of snow but the children

know how he came to life one day

There must have been some magic in that

old silk hat they found

For when they placed it on his head

he began to dance around

O Frosty the snowman

was alive as he could be

And the children say he could laugh

and play just the same as you and me

Thumpetty thump thump

thumpety thump thump

Look at Frosty go

Thumpetty thump thump

thumpety thump thump

Over the hills of snow

Frosty the snowman knew

the sun was hot that day

So he said

Let's run and

we'll have some fun

now before I melt away

Down to the village

with a broomstick in his hand

Running here and there all

around the square saying

Catch me if you can

He led them down the streets of town

right to the traffic cop

And he only paused a moment when

he heard him holler "Stop!"

For Frosty the snow man

had to hurry on his way

But he waved goodbye saying

Don't you cry

I'll be back again some day

Dashing Through the Snow

During the song Jingle Bells, in what are they dashing through the snow?

  • A one-horse open sleigh
  • An old car
  • A fast buggy
  • A quick, little sled
  • A little go-kart

I don't think a car or go-kart would work really well to get through snow, so we better stick with a one-horse open sleigh.

One Horse Open Sleigh

Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh

Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh

Teenage Boys Showing Off

A horse-drawn sleigh was a bit of a combination of souped up car and bachelor van of the time. Guys would take their girls out on a sleigh ride and show off their fancy rig and fast horse while getting her alone and wanting to cuddle. Add some "medicinal" alcohol and it's no wonder their spirits were bright. There is even a drunk joke in the song.

Jingle Bells Lyrics

Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh

Over the fields we go, laughing all the way;

Bells on bob-tail ring, making spirits bright

What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride

And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side;

The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot;

He got into a drifted bank and we, we got upsot

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

A day or two ago, The story I must tell

I went out on the snow, And on my back I fell;

A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh,

He laughed as there I sprawling lie, But quickly drove away.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Now the ground is white Go it while you're young,

Take the girls tonight and sing this sleighing song;

Just get a bobtailed bay Two forty as his speed

Hitch him to an open sleigh

And crack! you'll take the lead.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Even though I only got 70%, I can recognize a perfect quiz when I see one. These questions are "straight down the middle." Unlike so many Squidoo quizzes, this one contains no "unanswerables." If I'd been paying a little closer attention on a few more Christmases, I think I might've gotten 100% on this one. It was a pleasure taking it. Thumbs up!
