Christmas with an Aluminum Christmas tree is a magical silver Christmas. These amazing shiny spectacles of joy are fun to collect and use year after year during the holidays, complete the tree display with a vintage color wheel and you will have a holiday memory in the making. Vintage aluminum Christmas trees are very easy to find these days, many can be found on eBay and at antique stores during the holidays. The aluminum Pom Pom Christmas tree was symbolic of the coming of the futurist space age, and nothing said Christmas like high luster aluminum. It is not really a vintage Eames era Christmas without a Mad Men era aluminum Pom Pom Christmas tree. This was the tree that was to become the holiday poster boy and masterpiece of the coming modern space age Xmas. The vintage aluminum Christmas tree, better known back in the early 1960s as the silver bright sparkler or Pom Pom Xmas tree was the tree everyone wanted back in the good old days of the blast off into the future early 1960’s. Modern Coatings, Inc. in Chicago made the first commercially manufactured Aluminum tree sometime around 1955. Two of the very first aluminum Pom Pom Christmas tree were made in 1959 just before the Christmas season and were manufactured by the Star Band Company in Portsmouth, Virginia, and the Aluminum Specialty Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in the United States of America. Soon after these first three company’s aluminum Christmas trees appeared on the market there were many other Aluminum Christmas Tree manufacturers who went into business, and adopted the style of these trees.
The aluminum Christmas tree became extremely popular and sought after by the public in the early and mid-1960s. With beautiful mercury glass balls of red, blue and green these trees were very dazing to behold. Throw in a color wheel and you are on the launch pad for an awesome display that gives a dazzling brilliance to any room. The Aluminum Christmas tree remained a top seller on the market until the mid 1970s, and was phased out by the bicentennial year of 1976 when more traditional trees became popular. Originally, the trees predominant color was silver and represented a wonderfully-sparkling breathtaking symbol the "Space Age Era" with silver reflecting bright moving points of light that had silvery shimmering branches. However in the late 1960s pink, purple, gold, green, red and a whole gallery of colors became available. Even the famous vintage aluminum Christmas tree the Sparkler or POM-POM was later manufactured in various other shades such as blue, pink, green and red. In our times these remarkable and well-made aluminum trees are found on vintage sites across the internet with their swirled and tapered fullness ready to be UN-boxed for a new Christmas.
A Pom Pom Sparkler Christmas Tree with a Color Wheel
On a vintage Aluminum Christmas tree I prefer a mix color assortment of balls, with different sizes and shapes. You cannot and would not want to string Christmas lights onto an aluminum Christmas tree, this would just be very ugly. Also this could be a major fire hazard because the tree is not design to handle electrical lights, and is made of aluminum which is a conductor of electricity. The branches are also incredibly delicate, and are already heavily layered with sparking aluminum.

Ever-gleam Aluminum or Ever-bright Pom Pom Christmas Trees
Often folks think of aluminum Christmas Trees as the “1950s Christmas Trees". But the truth is most of the aluminum trees were manufactured in the early 1960s One of the first well know aluminum Christmas trees brands was manufactured in the year 1959 and was called an Ever-gleam tree they were the first to reach the large department stores of the Midwest. The Ever-gleam trees were made in Manitowoc which is a town located in Wisconsin by the world famous Aluminum Specialty Company which was already well established in many retail stores with it kitchen products. Soon many other companies soon began making aluminum Christmas trees such as the Ever-bright Pom Pom Christmas tree which had Pom Poms on the end of the branches and made the trees look like they were cheerleaders with Pom Pom; these trees were made be the Star Band Company in Portsmouth, Virginia, and these trees became popular in the department stores located in the southeast and the east coast areas.

Vintage aluminum Christmas trees are also referred to as the modern space age Christmas tree. One must remember that great care must be taken when decorating an aluminum tree due to the tree being delicate and vintage, and the remarkable way they are made requires one to be gentle with the metal rod branches that are coated with layers of silver aluminum foil of woven aluminum. The decorations on these trees need to be very light. You cannot decorate these trees with heavy ornaments the same way you would decorate a live tree, or artificial green plastic tree. It would be good to have a nice collection of light weight vintage mercury glass balls to decorate a vintage aluminum tree with, some folks like to use just one color scheme such as all blue or all red. I prefer a mixed selection of different colors on my trees.

Lovers of Antiques know Vintage Aluminum Trees are Special
Most lovers of fine antiques know there is something very special about vintage aluminum trees. I think of my grandmother every year when I put my tree up, and I admire the fact that she always kept it in pristine condition with its original box, and paperwork. It was always incredible to me that she could get a six foot tree into the box the size of a bread box. I have always cherished both the box, and the tree, and kept every paper sleeve safe, just as my grandmother would always do every year it is a family tradition.

The beauty about this tree is it is naturally sparkly especially when you have a color wheel at its base. With the right glass balls and decorations on the branches these trees will enhance any room which have warm comfortable lighting because the silver in the tree will pick up the light and made the room shimmer with a dazzling brilliance. Remember it is always good to have a well-made vintage color wheel and place it on the floor in back of or in front of the tree, when the color wheel spends it will bring out the tree's natural or should I say unnatural colors and then you will fill like you are in the 1960s again!

I love the first photograph.
Burke Mathes on August 28, 2014:
I had a seven foot tall silver pom pom Christmas tree it was beautiful, my wife sold it in a garage sell in the early 1980s. I wish I still had it, I hate dealing with a live tree, the water, and pine needles. It only took 15 minutes to put the Aluminum tree up, and take it down, very amazing.
