Age Appropriate Halloween Costumes for Kids and Teens

Kitty's favorite holiday is Halloween. She's been making her own costumes and studying Halloween as a holiday for over a decade.

These kids are cute and age-appropriately dressed for Halloween.

Halloween Costumes for Kids That Match Their Ages

Is it just me or do some of the Halloween costumes on the market for children seem a little inappropriate? For instance, I don't feel like putting my three-year-old daughter in a skin-tight cat costume is age appropriate in the least. Children are meant to have cute and unique Halloween costumes, not costumes that look like wild clubwear for sorority girls.

So what do we do if most of the Halloween stores and department stores are selling inappropriate children's Halloween costumes? Dig around and look harder for some actual age appropriate Halloween costumes for kids, of course. Sometimes it just takes a little patience and effort.

For toddlers, what's better and more age appropriate than the good ol' ghost Halloween costume? It's conservative and adorable and fun for your toddler, too. The dinosaur costume is another great age appropriate Halloween costume for your toddler, and will keep him/her quite warm in colder climates. Or how about a cutie pie pumpkin Halloween costume for your little girl this year? These three costumes are both age appropriate and inexpensive. If you don't want your toddler looking like an emo vampire or a trashy biker chick, these age appropriate Halloween costumes are perfect ideas for this Halloween.

Inappropriate Halloween Costume for Tweens

Age Appropriate Halloween Costumes for Tweens

These days little girls are dressing more and more older for their age than ever before. It really frightens me to see little ten-year-old girls dressing as if they are twenty-years-old. Don't let your tween daughter dress inappropriately for Halloween this year, find her an age appropriate Halloween costume that is conservative and also cute. There are plenty of options for age appropriate Halloween costumes for tweens on Amazon and elsewhere.

I'll give you a couple clues as to what not to let your tween daughter wear this Halloween:

  • nothing with a skirt more than four inches above the knee
  • nothing with thigh-high stockings or knee high socks (play it safe with leggings or tights)
  • nothing that emulates dirty adult women costumes such as nurses, schoolgirls, kitty cats (see picture to the right), etc.

Check out some of the options to the right, such as the Tribal Spirit Halloween costume for tween girls. It's cute, stylish, and not trashy in the least. I would put my tween daughter in this Halloween costume this year for sure. Another good option is the Cleo cutie Halloween costume for tween girls. Again, age appropriate Halloween costumes for tween girls aren't that difficult to find...just follow the guidelines.

These Seattle teens are mostly appropriately dressed...minus the mini-skirt in the middle. Plus, most of these costumes look home-made and therefore will save $$.

"Sexy" cop is not a good look on a teenager...have her save that for later years.

Teen Girl Halloween Costumes

If you are as protective of your daughter as I am of mine, we don't want our teen girls going out to a Halloween party or trick-or-treating looking like they're in college and going to a club. So are there age appropriate Halloween costumes for teenage girls? Yes, there are plenty. You can use these guidelines as to what not to buy for your teenage girl as

What NOT to buy for your teen girl's Halloween Costume this year:

  • Short short skirts
  • fishnet stockings
  • lace-up boots
  • corsets or generally skimpy tops and dresses
  • stiletto (5" or higher) high heels
  • any costume that emulates a grown woman's "Sexy" costume (i.e. nurse, cop, maid, mermaid, teacher, schoolgirl, etc)

Again, any costume that mimics the adult women's "naughty" Halloween costumes like nurses, air force girls, schoolgirls, nuns, etc. are not generally age appropriate for a teenage girl Halloween costume. Try to look for stylish costumes that keep your teenage girl's legs and such moderately covered. The partyland valley girl teen costume below is cute, hip, and covers the teenage girl's legs with leggings. The purple witch costume for teenage girls is classic and unique...believe it or not...and will keep your teenage girl looking appropriate for Halloween. Even the gothic mummy Halloween costume is cute and conservative enough for any teenage girl this Halloween.

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on October 11, 2011:

fester - Thanks so much. Thanks for reading and sharing.

Daniel Christian from Los Angeles, CA on October 11, 2011:

I agree. Teens and especially preteens should dress age appropriately with their Halloween costumes. Nice hub.

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on October 11, 2011:

Pinkchic - I agree, there's definitely no need for pre-teens and tweens to be dressing as women. Thanks for reading.

Sarah Carlsley from Minnesota on October 11, 2011:

Wonderful hub. I agree, there are definitely plenty of age appropriate costumes out there for tweens. No need to grow up too quickly.

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on October 09, 2011:

Who knows.

katchaatcourt on October 09, 2011:

Why do tweens and teens costumes all look like the girls are for sale?

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on September 13, 2011:

I have no idea, Meisjunk! My daughter has changed her mind about five times already - ghost, witch, mermaid in the sea, rapunzel, pirate, vampire...who knows!

beth - LOL! While those images that floated into my mind were disgusting...at least I got a good hearty laugh this morning. That woke me up! Thanks! Hahahaha

Beth Perry from Tennesee on September 13, 2011:

I don't like to see little girls dressed like vamps or little boys dressed as pimps. Disgusting.

What scares me as much as kids dressed inappropriately are adults doing it. A couple of years back some huge guy from the neighborhood went around in a Pooh Bear outfit and was asking for candy. I would have wondered maybe he was mentally challenged, but he had beer on his breath and the woman with him kept grabbing his rear. Then there was the guy last year in the Power Puff Girls costume. It was bad enough the skirt was so short and I noticed a huge gash in the rear as he walked off, but the five o'clock shadow and baritone voice just ruined the whole "look". At least he didn't grumble about the mini Tootsie-rolls like the kids did.

Good hub, I'm voting up!

Jennifer Kessner from Pennsylvania on September 12, 2011:

Great tips and and adorable costumes! Which will you be using for your daughter this year? =)

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on September 12, 2011:

Maddie Ruud - Yes, very scary indeed. I'll tell you one thing - my daughter won't live to see another day if she wears a skimpy cop outfit for halloween!

Maddie Ruud from Oakland, CA on September 12, 2011:

I completely agree with you that kids should be wearing age-appropriate costumes. It makes me cringe every year when I see teenage girls prancing around in what I think are basically themed stripper outfits. I don't really like them on adult women either, but that's another story. ;)

Kitty Fields (author) from Summerland on September 10, 2011:

Jeannieinabottle - LOL! Haha..you almost had me going there for a second! Yes, it's truly ridiculous some of the Halloween costumes they have on the market for little girls and teen girls. While I am liberal and very "do as ye will" kind of a person, I disagree with encouraging our daughters to dress like sluts for Halloween before the age of 18! Thanks for reading and voting.

Jeannie Marie from Baltimore, MD on September 10, 2011:

Really? The pink leopard cat outfit isn't appropriate for a 10 year old? Just kidding! This is a terrific hub for parents. There are some bad ideas for Halloween costumes out there; sometimes I think pedaphiles design those outfits. Voted up and useful!
