A Surprise Mother’s Day Gift for a New Mother

Chuck enjoys celebrating holidays with his family. This has led to an interest in researching & writing about holidays & their traditions.

We Fly To Seattle A Week After Our New Grandson Was Born

A few weeks ago, in mid-March our daughter in Seattle gave birth to her first child, a son for her and her husband and a grandson for her Mother and me.

We were on a plane to Seattle a week later to see our new grandson and spent almost two weeks enjoying him (including sitting up a couple of late nights helping to feed him - the kid insisted on being fed every 3 hours and our daughter and son-in law welcomed our help).

My Wife Finds A Unique Mother’s Day Gift For Our Daughter

Late last week my wife reminded me that Mother’s Day was coming and we needed to get her something special for her first Mother’s Day. Of course my wife already knew exactly what we needed to get her - a blanket with a photo of our grandson on it.

I had never heard of printing pictures on a blanket but wasn’t surprised as technology was enabling us to have the pictures we take displayed on everything imaginable so putting them on blankets was no surprise.

My wife had probably gotten the idea after running across photo blankets on Facebook or some other internet site. Of course we had taken a couple hundred pictures of the little fellow during our visit and we had received a few dozen more from our daughter after we left to return home so we had plenty of pictures to work with.

I was surprised when I Googled “photo blankets” and came up with numerous pages of links to sites selling photo blankets. I was also envisioning a blanket for our daughter and her husband’s bed - after all it was a Mother’s Day gift and not a grandson gift. Of course he will probably outgrow it before his first birthday and then his mother will probably frame it and hang it on the wall or display it on the back of a chair or couch where it will embarrass him when his friends come over or when he is older and brings his fiancee home to introduce her to his parents.

After a quick search I found a place that looked good. My wife chose two pictures - one for the front and one for the back along with making the choice for the fabric. The process was easy and we completed our design and clicked OK. The price was reasonable and we were able to have it shipped directly to our daughter One of the things I really liked was the fact that I was able to complete the purchase without having to set up an account (with another username and password to remember) since I don’t foresee buying photo blankets regularly.

Your Photos On A Blanket

An Ideal Gift For Our Daughter

At a month and a half old our grandson doesn’t ask for much other than having parents (and grandparents when visiting) nearby and ready to pick him up, feed him, change him or just hold him and talk to him. He is a great conversationalist as you can talk to him about anything or just random words and he just looks up at you with his big blue eyes enjoying the sound.

As for the blanket, so long as it keeps him warm and comfortable, he will be fine with it. I know our daughter will be very happy seeing her little creation snuggling in his blanket with his picture prominently displayed on it.

I know because we first learned of her pregnancy when she called us and said that we would be receiving a package in the mail. When it came we were to wait until we were both together and then call her before opening. When it arrived, we called her, opened the package and saw two inscribed coffee cups. The inscription on one was The Best Moms Get Promoted to Grandma and on the other The Best Dads Get Promoted to Grandpa. A touching and cherished gift.

Peggy - thanks. Our daughter received the blanket yesterday and called my wife as soon as she finished opening the package. We hadn't told her about the blanket and apparently the company made no mention of who had sent it (or, maybe I didn't notice the spot where we could include a note as it was shipped directly to her). However, our daughter assumed it was from us since we were the only ones to whom she had sent the pictures we used. And, as we expected she loved the blanket and sent us a couple pictures of her holding it. Thanks again for your kind comments.

Brenda - I know I am very blessed to have not only my wonderful wife and daughter but also my 3 sons and now 3 grandchildren. I know how fortunate I am and am very grateful. Thanks for your kind comments.

I am sure that the photo blankets will be happily received. Your Grandma and Grandpa mugs are equally cute, and I am sure, cherished as well.

It sounds like it. Count your blessings.

You are a lucky man.

Brenda Arledge - thank you for your kind remarks. Actually my wife and daughter are on the same wavelength while I'm a step or so behind. My wife and daughter know exactly what to look for and find them. Once they show me I usually see the beauty of the gift right away but never would have thought of it on my own. I am really fortunate to have both of them.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on May 05, 2021:

Awe...this is so sweet.

It seems great minds think alike.

Both you & your wife are on the same wavelength as your daughter.

I love the blanket idea. That's the perfect gift.

Those cups are the greatest have been promoted.

Congratulations on your grandson.

Enjoy all the moments you can with him.

Have a blessed day.

Liz - thanks for your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I had never heard about printing photos on a blanket but wasn't surprised as we seem to be able to print photos on practically everything. As to having to sign up on sites I have a couple of pages of sites with my username and password and am trying to clean it up and get rid of sites on accounts which I haven't used in years but it is difficult as I frequently have to call and sit on hold for ages in order to just delete these accounts and remove my information.

Chuck Nugent (author) from Tucson, Arizona on May 05, 2021:

Bill - thanks for your comment. She and her mother are very close and think alike on many things, so I'm sure she will like the blanket when it arrives. I saw your comment on someone else's post saying you were going to Florida. Have a great trip and enjoy the sunshine.

Liz Westwood from UK on May 05, 2021:

This is a lovely idea for a personal gift, very well reviewed. I had never thought about a blanket before. We have a similar mug in our house. I agree too about the need to register. Sign up details are a pain to remember.

Bill De Giulio from Massachusetts on May 05, 2021:

Congratulations Chuck. And what a great idea for a Mother’s Day gift. I’m sure your daughter will love the blanket.
