Weekends are favourite for all and are like an oasis for working people, to enjoy and to relax. One should relax or enjoy on weekends? In my view, relaxation should be given extra points than enjoyment but with proper planning, we can have both. Weekend relaxation is very important as it helps to rejuvenate us both physically and emotionally. In current times of pandemic and on and off lockdowns and social distancing, we should take care and plan accordingly.
When I was working in a Multi-National Company (MNC), 10 hours per day with rotational shifts, I would wait for my weekends to relax. At first, I couldn't do anything but sleep for a whole day and doing chores and planning for the next week. I didn't have time to enjoy and used to feel like I am working on those two days also. I realised what is wrong and scheduled a rough plan for 4 weekends in a month.
In present times, working from home became an essential working mode and people are spending more time at homes. The weekends should be enjoyed according to this condition as well.
Do not break these rules:
- When going outside, always carry a small safety kit which consists of few masks, pocket sanitiser, clean tissues, a water bottle that can be discarded after use, small and one time packets of snacks like a few dry fruits, biscuits etc.
- Maintain social distance as possible.
- Select less crowded areas or some calm and solitary places for outdoor relaxing.
- Always wash your hands, face and legs or bath when returning home.
In this article, I wanted to share my kind of schedule and tips for relaxing on weekends with enjoyment included.
1. Visit Mother Nature:
Where can one find the best relaxation other than in the lap of nature? It is the best and quickest way of relaxation. Every valuable and essential thing on this planet comes freely like a cool shade of a tree, chirping of birds, running rivers, awesome sceneries etc. All we have to do is to sit and relax with nature. Lets us see some ideas...
a. Watch a sunrise or a sunset
Scheduled time: 5.30 AM to 6.30 AM or 5.30 PM to 6.30 PM
I feel that one of the pleasures of life is to enjoy the sight of natural wonders. Mother nature is a wonderful creator and an architect. Sunrises and sunsets are the everyday beautiful sights that we neglect. Think when was the last time you saw a beautiful Sunrise or Sunset from your window or balcony in this busy schedule of life?
Find out if your city or town has some spectacular sunrise and sunset viewpoints and plan accordingly. You can go for a long ride to enjoy these as well. If you do not want to go outside, everyone has a terrace or a balcony to feel the golden rays of the sun rising. Bonus, you will get vitamin D naturally which is important for immunity. Enjoy watching the sun with some snacks, breakfast, hot coffee or drinks and capture the moments with beautiful photos or videos.
b. Have a casual morning walk in a park
Scheduled time: 6.30 AM to 7.30 AM.
There are many advantages to go for a walk in a park especially in the mornings because, in concrete jungles like cities and large towns, parks are nature abodes. A morning walk is the best way to relax but it may not be an exercise but more like a casual walk and the importance here is to relax in the presence of nature by indulging in the surroundings like relaxing on a park bench under the cool shade, listening to the chirping of birds, observing your surroundings, walk barefoot on grass etc.
An evening walk is also good but it lacks the serenity and freshness of mornings. In the present hasten lifestyle, spending some time calmly and slowly is very important and essential.
Scheduled time: 6.00 AM to 9.00 AM
Gardening is a hobby and one of the best ways to relax with nature. It may be a kitchen or edible garden, a terrace garden, a backyard garden, a balcony garden or a few flowering pots or indoor plants. In every household, there will be at least one or few plants. Tending to them, taking care and watering the plants is very relaxing.
Whatever action or option you choose to relax in nature's lap, make sure that you should help the environment but shouldn't damage it.
2. Planning for next week:
Scheduled day: Saturday
Scheduled time: 2 to 4 hours
Planning for next week is necessary and inescapable but a full day shouldn't be spent on this. There will be daily or weekly chores like laundry, household cleaning, grocery shopping, health checkups, next week meal plan etc. Plan a few hours like 2 to 4 hours for these things and plan it on Saturday but not on Sunday so that you have one day for relaxation and do not spend more than 2 to 4 hours on chores.
3. Give time for your hobby:
Scheduled time: 1 to 2 hours
Hobbies should be part of daily life but should not be reserved to pursue after retirement. One should live and seize the present day. Hobbies add colour to our lives and help in relaxation. Take any good hobby, big or small and work on it. Give at least one or two hours of your time to your hobby and let the outcome be something creative and beautiful. In my case, I like to draw and colour. On my weekends, I draw and sketch in my drawing book and after I complete a design, I share the picture of my drawing with my family and friends. It gives happiness to me when they congratulate and give their feedback to me.
4. Beautify your inner and outer self:
Scheduled time: 1 to 2 hours
Every person born on this Earth is special, unique and beautiful in their way and grooming our inner and outer beauty is also important. Grooming not only relaxes our body and mind but also rejuvenates us with new energy. Spend one to two hours to groom yourself by visiting a beauty parlour, spa, massage clinic, or DIY/homemade beauty routines like salt baths, scrubs, foot massages, facial masks etc. It helps in physical relaxation. Plan one or two beauty routines per week and relax.
Grooming our inner beauty comes from understanding people and situations around us with a good heart and being a good and responsible human. A good human being is beautiful inside also and it can be achieved through spirituality, personality development, compassion, volunteering and helping other living beings as well.
5. Plan a small get together with your family and friends:
Scheduled time: 2 to 3 hours
This option is a very common option of enjoying but when we plan accordingly, the results will be fun and enjoyable. If we can not have a party or get together, we can plan virtual get-togethers. They are becoming an option when we have to maintain social distancing during current times. Plan a virtual get-together like a game night, date night, girls night, sleepovers etc. and have fun and enjoyment with your folk. Plan a get together on any one of the weekends in a month.
6. Take one-day downtime in a month:
Scheduled time: 1 day
Downtime is the time when you relax and do not do anything. Plan any one day of one of your weekends as your downtime which means, do not do anything but rest on one of your weekends in a month. For example, if you plan the third Saturday of a month as your downtime, you shouldn't do anything on that day and should only take rest as much as possible on the third Saturday. This helps in taking maximum rest physically and mentally. Make sure that you have one-day downtime every month.
7. Avoid Sunday Night Blues:
Scheduled time: From Sunday afternoon to Sunday night
The Sunday Night Blues is a feeling of dread, anxiety, and sadness that comes over you on Sunday afternoon or evening. It is also known as Sunday Night Depression, and psychologists tend to classify it as “situational depression”, or depression that happens as a reaction to your circumstances and goes away when the circumstances do.
To avoid Sunday night blues, do not plan or do not do anything from Sunday afternoon or evening to Sunday night. Try to relax at home during this time and rejuvenate yourself for the next coming week. Try to have two to three weekends in a month like this or at least one or two weekends. I always finish my chores or weekend plans before Sunday afternoon or evening. I made a rule to be in my home during that time and to relax with my family or to watch a movie together or anything on tv. Having a good dinner and going early to bed on a Sunday night makes you ready for the next week.
