I add spice to my life by celebrating as as many occasions or festivities as I can. Enjoy life!
1. Re-imagine your clothes in your closet.
Before heading to the store, go through your clothes and use your creative eye to re-imagine your clothes to fit a character.
Remember that your costume does not have to look exactly the same as what the character wore.. For example, the one-sided dress of Pocahontas below can be a spaghetti strap dress that you might have in your closet. For Belle of Sleeping Beauty, no need to get a yellow gown, a cocktail dress may do. For the Genie in Alladin, you can wear a long-sleeved dress. The idea is to get the color theme of the costume of the character.
Genie in Alladin
Wear a long sleeved blue dress with copper cuffs to be the Genie in Alladin. Use a black eyeliner to make your eyes exotic looking. Wear a high pony tail with a black scoongie. A blue eye makeup will amp up your Genie effect. Complete your costume by carrying a kettle lamp!!
Pocahontas Boho Chic
Most of us have a beige a dress in our wardrobe. Wear it with tan leather sandals, a turquoise necklace and a red scoongie in your arm, and you are off to being the Pocahontas in your office party.
If you have an instant tanning lotion, you may choose to 'tan' yourself with it to get the dark skin of Pocahontas.
Complete your outfit with long black hair.
2. Explore the magic of cosmetics!
Now is the time to use the colors in your make-up or cosmetic sets that you normally do not use.
I do not normally use the leaf green eyeshadow color in my make up sets. But I can definitely use it now to recreate the face of Poison Ivy.
Remember, you are creating a costume so it is ok to use colors you skip in the make up sets that you have.
Alluring Jessica Rabbit
Bring out your old red dress and partner it with lavender gloves for the alluring Jessica Rabbit costume. Amp up the effect by wearing a red wig and exaggerated make- up!
3. Recycle stuff in your house as props for your costume.
There is no need to buy props for your costume. If you have black round glasses, use it as part of your costume for Edna Mode of The Incredibles.
You can use some of your crawling house plants as part of the Poison Ivy costume.
Cut out some bat wings from black cartolina and attach them to a pair of black boots for your bat costume.
If you have a blonde wig at home, dye it with another color to suit the hair color of your chosen character like Jessica Rabbit above.
Little Details Matter
That extra effort to get a wig to go with your costume will make a big difference, especially for the Edna Mode Costume, Jessica Rabbit and Poison Ivy. The Dollar Store is a good place to hunt for one. Color it with another color if you can't find the right color.
Costumes do not have to be scary for Halloween. I, for one, have never worn a scary costume. I have always opted for a cartoon character, a professional (police woman, nurse, PE teacher) or celebrity. For this year's costume, I am going to be Madona: Madame X. So excited about it!
