Giving Thanks

Saying thank you is a wonderful way to acknowledge a kindness someone has extended toward us.

Thanking someone may seem like a simple thing at first but the more you think about it the more complicated it becomes. In the past I have picked out beautiful thank you cards only to have my mind go blank when I had to actually write something inside it. Or perhaps there is a time when you feel as though more than just a note is needed to get your feelings of gratitude across. Whatever the reason, here are some helpful hints on different ways you can say thank you.

1. Thank You Note

A note, written and mailed the old fashioned way never goes out of style. A special written note can make all the difference. Don't worry about the length, but instead go for sincerity. Be specific and include details. Instead of saying "thanks for the socks," try something more along the line of "The socks you gave me were my favorite shade of blue. I love how cozy they are!" If you have recived a gift that you don't like, you don't have to lie, but let the person know you are happy they were thinking of you. It's the thought that counts remember!

2. Gift of Food

Food is a great way to show thanks. Handmade goodies means you are also giving thought and time into your thank you. Before you give someone food, however, make sure they don't have any allergies or dietary restrictions. Giving someone cupcakes who is trying to lose weight may not be the best way to say "I'm thinking about you." A pretty assortment of fruits would be more appropriate in such a case. Use your best judgment!

3. Photographs

Visuals are a wonderful way to convey your grattitude, especially if you are giving thanks for a service instead of a gift. For example, if your best friend helped you weed your back porch take a picture to show her how great it looks. Include a short saying how you couldn't have done it without her. You can even take a picture of how happy you are for such and such and send your smiling face to the person who helped you out.

4. Flowers

Flowers are not just for romantic dates or telling someone sorry. They are a beautiful piece of nature that can lift the spirits of anyone. Surprise your friends and family when they least expect it. Pick an assortment of wildflowers or if this is not possible for you go to the local florist and select an arrangement that you think bests suits the personality of the person you are trying to thank.

5. Cleaning Up

One of my favorite ways to thank my Mother is to do chores for her around the house. Nothing surprises or pleases her more than seeing the house clean after a hard days work. Plus its absolutely free! Even doing something as simple as the dishes that never get done or dusting the living room can make a huge difference. Our environment surrounds us all the time and the state it is in is often a reflection of how we feel. If you are thanking a friend, offer a hand in cleaning the sink, doing a load of laundry, or even cleaning out the fish tank!

6. Show Your Affection

Sometimes a big bear hugs says thank you in just the right way! Make sure you put all your appreciation and joy into that hug. A little human contact can really make a person's day.

7. the Gift of Time

Know someone who is always so busy helping others they rarely have time for themselves? Offer a bit of your own time so that they can have an opening to do whatever they like. Offer to babysit the kids or to go to the grocery store for them (don't forget their list!).

8. Say It with a Song

Sometimes music can say things that words can't. Make a mixed tape or cd of songs that represent how thankful you are. Choose them by either their upbeat quality or the lyrics. Listen to the tape over before giving it to them to make sure your choices are appropriate.

9. Return It in Better Condition

If a friend lets you borrow something, say a blender, return it in better condition than you received it. Clean all the parts and make sure everything works perfectly. If you were given something in a food safe container, return it with fresh food inside!

10. Make Art

This is one of my favorite ways to say thank you. It's okay if you think the only thing you are good at is stick figures! Draw a stick figure comic that shows how happy you are about the gift/service you received. Think about all the decorative ways you can say thank you. You can frame a thank you note or doodle something simple.

I very much appreciate thank you's and give them all the time. It does ache me when I don't hear a simple thank you.
